At the Hillary Ball

by: Juan Melli

Last night I attended one of the two Hillary Clinton fundraisers in North Jersey at the home of Michael Kempner in Cresskill which raised over a quarter million dollars for the campaign. I'm still uncommitted about who to support, though in the interest of full disclosure, I'm leaning towards Obama right now. I also really like Edwards. For all of Clinton's supposed experience, her judgement on foreign policy leaves much to be desired. Her campaign calls Obama naive, but can you be more naive than to trust and authorize Bush and the neocons to invade the wrong country? But I digress.

Hillary Clinton

The event was packed with over 200 guests including Governor Corzine, Assemblywoman Valerie Huttle, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes, former Congressman Bill Hughes, Highland Park Mayor Meryl Frank, Englewood Cliffs Mayor Joe Parisi, Morristown Mayor Donald Cresitello, 5th district Congressional Candidate-American Paul Aronsohn, 39th district Senate candidate Joe Aryan, and Camden County Clerk Jim Beach.

I was surprised to see that the mayor of Morristown was there. He's called those who oppose his anti-immigrant plan "Communists and Marxists". If I had to guess I don't think Clinton would support his plan, but he's apparently a big supporter of hers anyway.

Though there are those who legitimately believe in her, it's no secret or surprise that the state's political establishment is lining up behind Clinton simply because she's the frontrunner and they expect her to win. It's kind of lemmingish and boring, but that's how people play the game. They did it with Howard Dean to some degree, too. Publicly they'll say things like she's the "most qualified" or has the "most experience." But privately, a surprising number will admit that it's just about getting on the winning bandwagon.

I heard a few people mocking Edison mayor Jun Choi and Congressman Steve Rothman for not falling in line and instead endorsing Obama. Not on the merits - just because they think they're getting behind a losing candidate. "What's the point once the county chairs have gotten behind her?" And they really believe that.

$250,000? (0.00 / 0)
did i read that right?
wowza.

stickershock aside, I am totally still undecisive about my pick.  Part of me wants Hillary, part likew Edwards and another part has a huge crush on Obama.  I even love the lower tier peeps in their own way.

So tell me Blue Jersey peeps, am i whirling in indecision all alone or are there others like me (and Juan) who still can't seem to pick.

I know just how you feel. Right now I lean toward Obama, but am not committed by any means.

    Waiting for Gore (4.00 / 1)
I know that I have questioned the Gore enfatuation that some have expressed here in the past, but with the front runners (Clinton, Edwards, and Obama) being so inexperienced and the grownups (Biden, Dodd, and Richardson) appearing so impotent, the only candidate who is both experienced enough to deal with the challenges of repairing this country as well as the rest of the world after the damage that 8 years of Bush has caused and able to change the calculus of the race overnight is Al Gore.

I see the picture of Juan hogging all of the pigs in blankets didn't make the cut.

I think the Rothman endorsement makes all the sense in the world. If Clinton gets the nod, he falls in line. Is that really going to hurt him, long-term? And if Obama pulls it out, Rothman ends up a genius. Also, and I know this sounds crazy, maybe he actually believes in Obama.

$250k is nothing to shake a stick at. Must have been a lot of cleavage.

    interesting blog post (0.00 / 0)
Andrew Sullivan is not a liberal, but I think his post today captures an important point:

    Clinton, Obama and Fear.

A Clinton presidency will be a long series of triangulations in which we are sold out again and again to prove she is a moderate.

Actually, by rhetoric Edwards is the most confident and aggressive, but it's just worth thinking about.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

And a player to be named later (0.00 / 0)
With today's baseball trading deadline on my mind, I can't help but think that, more and more, it seems like in recent years the GOP and Dems have traded Andrew Sullivan for Christopher Hitchens.

    [ Parent ]
It does seem that way (0.00 / 0)
But once Bush is out of the picture, Sullivan will go back to fearing socialism and the like.

the big news today is the trading deadline and the Mets new 2nd baseman.  I'm thinking of starting a "Randolph for President" effort....

    Gotay is better (0.00 / 0)
I'm a Yankees fan and may not be entitled to an opinion here, but while there is no harm in bringing in a guy like Castillo, if it takes opportunities away from a kid with a ton of potential like Ruben Gotay, I think that it is a mistake.

Here's hoping that the Yankees find a way to get rid of Kyle Farnsworth and obtain Eric Gagne.

Here's to another Subway Series in 2007, although the Mets would have to be favored because since 1960, the Yankees have not won a World Series when there has been a Republican in the White House.

Is there enough time to impeach Bush and Cheney between now and October?

That said, considering the way that the Yankees treated Bernie Williams this year, i don't expect them to make the playoffs again until Bernie is brought back or Brian Cashman is fired.

    Never heard that stat. (0.00 / 0)
So why are so many Yankee fans Republicans? Another example of people voting against their interests.

On the Gotay front, I'd be more upset if he was part of the deal. He's still here and may be part of their future. The Mets got a solid player and gave up little. Castillo is an excellent fielder that hits 300 and can steal bases. Not a blockbuster, but it works for me!

    It's quite remarkable (0.00 / 0)
100% World Series wins under Carter and Clinton, 100% losses under Reagan and GWB.

Apparently Proctor was traded away, but I like him better than Farnsworth.

    Dumb Republican Sports Fans (0.00 / 0)
Why don't more Republican Yankee fans know about this stat?  Sports fans in general are not the brightest people.  Add to that the fact that they are Republicans, and I think that you get the picture.

    Interesting... (0.00 / 0)
I didn't realize that correlation between the Yankees and Democrats.  Come to think of it, the Mets two world series wins came during Republican years....

Ok, so how about this:  the Mets go all the way this year, and then the Yankees take it for the next eight???

    Is Randolph a Democrat? (0.00 / 0)
Most pro athletes/coaches are Republicans, although some are worse than others.  Joe Torre has actually made campaign appearances on behalf of Republican candidates, not only in the NY-Metro area, but far outside of it as well.

Paul Aronsohn could be accused of pandering on some issues, but I get the sense that his heart is pure when it comes to his love of the Mets.  His abandonment of Bill Richardson in favor of Willie Randolph is proof positive of this.  Politics can bring out the whore in the best of us, but the love of the game of baseball is as pure as anything on this planet.

I think that this is why Hillary Clinton will probably lose New York (city and state) to Rudy Giuliani if the two of them are the Democratic and Republican nominees for President in 2008.  Anybody who grew up in and around Chicago and wears a Yankees cap during a campaign season has no soul.

And if she can't beat Giuliani in New York, she shouldn't be the Democratic nominee.

    [ Parent ]
    rhetoric and rhetoric alone (0.00 / 0)
If we chide Republicans for buying into Mitt Romney's "conversion" from a liberal/moderate Republican to the right-wing-nut that he now claims to be, why should anybody trust Edwards, who not only voted for the war in Iraq, but also for the Bush tax cuts, just because he's said that he is sorry.

I would argue that if Edwards wants to truly win over the base of the Democratic Party, he should be running against Libby Dole in 2008, giving Democrats a chance to expand our majority in the Senate.

He will still be more than young enough to make another run for President in 4-8 years and, as a Senator, will be able to put his votes where his mouth is and truly redeem himself for the bad votes that he cast in the past.

I would also argue that with the Democratic establishment in NJ falling in line behind Hillary Clinton with the exception of a few key Mayors (Booker, Healy, and Choi) and Steve Rothman, there is a chance that Barack Obama could seriously compete here on February 5.

I think that a strategic argument could be made for progressives who seem to favor Edwards over Obama, but clearly favor both over Clinton, to unite on behalf of Obama, who is much better positioned to compete here than Edwards, no matter how well he does in Iowa.

An Obama upset in NJ could help both him and Edwards in the long run as they both try to survive past February 5.

    Obama... (4.00 / 1)
Seems to generate interests from both sides of the aisle. I talked to more than a couple lifelong republicans who are so disenchanted with the current administration they are looking for a change in the white house. They believe (and I do too) that Obama represents the best chance of getting away from business as usual.

    Care to deport yourself?

    [ Parent ]
    Nope (0.00 / 0)
Not all Caucasians came here illegally.  There were no laws against immigrating here either before any Caucasians were here, or really until the early 1900s.  Anarchists, drunks and the ill were often forbidden, but general immigration limits weren't instituted until around WWI.

That said, I gave the original moronic comment here a 0.

You know, I stand in awe of you people. (0.00 / 0)
Courting personal disaster, every day, from a cerebral aneurysm, over this trumped-up and gamed "illegal immigration" trope, while the real damage is being done to the economy and social fabric of the country by the many ways major corporations game the H1-B process, not to mention outsourcing.

If you guys weren't so busy being mezmerized with one hand while being onanically manipulated with the other, by big business and their running dog mouthpieces, and looked into what was really happening and the damage that was really being done, I daresay you might sink out of sight into a well of shame, should a real clue somehow worm its way into your meager brainpans.

Simply nothing but useful idiots, you are. The Pavlov's Dogs of politics, with Lou Dobbs and Bill O'Reilly ringing the bell, as you salivate.

Howard Dean said that immigration, in all its forms, would be the next wedge driven by the RNC and its lickspittles, into the fabric of our society. The man is prescient.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

    Howard Dean (4.00 / 1)
Well, that's what I always say about Howard Dean...

The man isn't president, but he's still prescient. And that's the way it goes....

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
