Mr. 12-1: Scott Garrett denies Global Warming.

by: Scott Weingart

Wed Jun 27, 2007 at 03:02:15 PM EDT

Yesterday, Scott Garrett stood alone among New Jersey Congressmen when he voted to eliminate language from an appropriations bill expressing the sense of Congress that global warming is a real problem policymakers must address.  Joe Barton (R-Big Oil) offered the amendment striking the following language from the Department of the Interior appropriations bill:

SEC. 501. (a) The Congress finds that--

  • (1) greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere are causing average temperatures to rise at a rate outside the range of natural variability and are posing a substantial risk of rising sea-levels, altered patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation, and increased frequency and severity of floods, droughts, and wildfires;
  • (2) there is a growing scientific consensus that human activity is a substantial cause of greenhouse gas accumulation in the atmosphere; and
  • (3) mandatory steps will be required to slow or stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
  •   (b) It is the sense of the Congress that there should be enacted a comprehensive and effective national program of mandatory, market-based limits and incentives on emissions of greenhouse gases that slow, stop, and reverse the growth of such emissions at a rate and in a manner that (1) will not significantly harm the United States economy; and (2) will encourage comparable action by other nations that are major trading partners and key contributors to global emissions.
Twelve New Jersey Congressmen voted against the amendment and to preserve the language in the bill.  Scott Garrett, true to his anti-science, anti-New Jersey record, voted for the Barton amendment.

Garrett also voted to drastically cut funding for the EPA, a position he shared with not a single other Republican from either New York or New Jersey.  Then, after missing a vote, he gave New Jersey the finger when he once voted yet again in favor oil drilling off the Jersey shore.

NJ-05 may be a Republican district, but Scott Garrett's no mainstream Republican.  He's so far right, he puts his ideology ahead of his constituents' interest, and he's the laughingstock of the delegation.  North Jersey needs a congressmen who puts New Jersey ahead of big oil, which is why Scott Garrett needs to go.

I had a feeling this guy was a nut, one of his first 'from the office of your rep' letters involved fighting the 'scourage of meth'. How does this guy get elected anyway, I am new around here and just on face value he seems pretty lame.

And we have Garrett because his base never fails to hit the polls on election day. Also, if you look at his ELEC forms, he drags in a lot of money from outside his district, even outside of the state. That makes it very tough for a relative newcomer to run against him.

finally, he assiduously avoids things like campaining and debating. Debates, especially. His position is that he is above debates.

Put it all together and you have a lot of people in this district that don't know what his real positions are.

Another thing that must be added to this mix is that in the last two house election cycles, the DCCC gave no substantive support to the nominated candidates, bless their cheap little pointed heads.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

that aside, is meth production a big problem in rural North Jersey?? (0.00 / 0)
    just wondering.

    Growing (4.00 / 1)
    Nice post by the way.

It's a growing problem in the western part of the District.  On a national scale at the end of the interview with Garrett with him as the DEA agent, he said it wasn't a problem that required legislation.  I don't have the link handy, but there was a survey recently released showing use way above "official" estimates.

That is a great way to brand him. I hope it sticks-- it'd be great in campaign commercials.

    We will have a rare sighting (0.00 / 0)
of the elusive Congressman in Tenafly at a public forum at the Tenafly Library on Monday, July 2 from 11 am till 12 noon with Scott Garrett's mobile constituent service session.

Lets give him a warm welcome, and maybe ask him a few questions.  Who's game?

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

    Do you believe in science?

It's no wonder the pharmaceutical companies tend to avoid him, even though he's a North Jersey Republican.

    Great Work...Again (0.00 / 0)
Your diaries on "Mr. 12-1" (a.k.a. the "odd man out") are really excellent and really helpful

I, too, have catalogued many ... and there certainly are many ... of Garrett's outrageous votes on my website .  I'll be sure to add these.

    Thanks for your great work.

    Links? (0.00 / 0)
Since Congressional votes are a matter of public record and are easily found on the Web, and given that conservative voters tend not to believe anything unless presented with incontrovertible proof (and sometimes not even then), wouldn't it be helpful to put links to the actual vote roll call on your list?  That way no one could say you're just making partisan claims.

    [ Parent ]
    Really? (0.00 / 0)
You want him to list every vote Scott Garrett has ever taken to prove he's an extremist? That's like asking someone to produce a list of every time the Pope has received communion to prove that he's a Catholic.

That Scott Garrett is an extremist ought to be a given to any New Jerseyan who isn't part of Dubya's rapidly dwindling 28%.

I take your point about conservative voters, but they're not going to believe a list of votes they find on Blue Jersey or even a Democratic candidate's website, anyway.

Did you actually read my post? (0.00 / 0)
I'm talking about adding links on the web site to the roll call for these votes so that people can actually see the vote roll call.  These are all on thomas.loc.gov -- which is a government site and not affiliated with any candidate or party.

Without links, skeptical voters looking at a candidate (or at the very least partisan site) will have no way of easily verifying the claims made there.

It's not that hard to add links to a web site, and the list of Garrett's most egregious votes would have far more credibility if cited accordingly.
