Who wants to be a House member?

by: Jeff Gardner

Thu Dec 15, 2005 at 10:45:44 PM EST

While 7th District Democrats battle just for the chance to take back the House in 2006, there's also that little matter of our safe seats:

In the 13th District, a seat so safe that no republican is likely even to run (not even Bret Schundler), Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas is announced, Assemblyman Albio Sires is annointed, and Jersey City Councilman Steven Fulop is angling.

Hey, I guess it's hard to resist taking a shot when all you have to do is win the primary.

the word around Jersey City is that he is interested, but there are more pressing local issues he wants to address.

if not Fulop, then who? (0.00 / 0)
Are there any other progressive Democrats in the district who could be recruited to challenge Sires and Vas in the primary?

What is HCDFA's opinion of State Senator Joe Doria?  He was shafted after the 2001 election when Sires was made Speaker of the Assembly even though he was in line for the position.  Then, Doria lost his Assembly seat in 2003 as a result of the pissing match between Menendez and Cunningham, which resulted in Cunningham, Lou Manzo, and Anthony Chiappone defeating the Doria slate in the primary that year.  He was only able to return to Trenton after Cunningham's death in 2004.  I wonder if he could be convinced to break himself free from the clutches of the Hudson County Democratic machine.

Vas is only slightly preferable to Sires as he pushed aside a progressive female Democratic incumbent, Arlene Friscia, to claim his Assembly seat in 2001.  It would be great if a better option could be found.  I would like to learn more about Steven Fulop before giving up on him.

Does having run as a GOP candidate in the general election after losing the primary to Vas remove Arlene Friscia from consideration?  Would she run?

It was 2003.  Going into the primary without MCDO help she had only raised $128,480.  Vas, as challenger, raised $243,450 with the party's help.
