Organize for Edwards

by: Thurman Hart

Sun Jun 10, 2007 at 03:08:16 PM EDT

For five straight months, John Edwards has killed the entire Democratic field in the Blue Jersey straw poll.  That's great news for those of us who support John Edwards, but it isn't going to do a single thing about making him the next President of the United States.

New Jersey moved its primary forward so we would have a say in determining the Presidential candidates - but this primary looks to be over fairly quickly at the turn of the year.  It's time to get serious about putting the best Democrat forward and that means organizing, fundraising, and educating people about the '08 Presidential race.

Thurman Hart :: Organize for Edwards
You can donate to the Edwards campaign through my grassroots page.  But I'm asking for people to do more than just dump some hard-earned cash - let's start organizing a series of house parties and/or fundraisers and put John Edwards into the White House.

As always, you can contact me at texan-at-xpatriatedtexan-dot-com, or you can toss a little sum'n-sum'n in the comments.

I'll be helping (0.00 / 0)
the Edwards campaign.  2008 is almost here.  We have to start now.  Look for some inexpensive grassroots type events (not $1,000 - more like $50) we'll be putting together in North Jersey very soon.  We'll have music and food and a lot of fun catching up with our fellow grassroots activists who are working to change politics in our great state.  No reason we can't have fun while we are changing the world for the better.......

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

$400 bucks (1.00 / 3)
So, if just 5 more people give $50 that means John Edwards can get another $400 haircut right?

I guess there really are Two Americas.

ho ho, hee hee.  Oh man, that's just hilarious

You know, I think you're right - how much someone pays for a haircut has got to be the most pressing issue facing the country right now.

He's in a Presidential race (0.00 / 0)
Sadly, people do judge you on how you look. If he didn't have money to buy food and was spending $400 for his hair - that would be foolish. He probably spends far less on his appearance each month than a lot of women here in NJ.  I can't throw a rock in any direction around here without hitting a nail salon.

I wonder, is this animosity from some men related to the fact that at age 54 he still has some hair to cut?

We really need to talk about the issues instead of this stupid haircut thing.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Way to pick up the Republican talking points, there... (0.00 / 0)
Who needs Republicans when we have people like you to do their work for them?

Edwards is a wealthy man.  And this is a problem -- why?  Because he gives lie to the notion that once you have money, the Republicans represent your interest.  When you repeat the haircut talking point, you just reinforce this.

I am an Edwards supporter, but I'm seeing signs that the party has no intention of allowing him to be the nominee, despite the fact that he alone, according to the latest polls, beats Rudy the Dictator.  Kind of makes you wonder what's operative here.

Pressing Issue...Of Course Not (0.00 / 0)
A $400 haircut being a pressing issue...of course not.  But, golly, it sure is a stupid thing to do while making poverty a major plank of your presidential platform.

Perhaps I am still miffed at having to stand in a hot sweaty room at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark during a thunderstorm back in the Fall of 04 for that Edwards event while he took his sweet time getting a jog in on the treadmill in the gym.  There were a few hundred of us standing there stuffed in like sardines for several hours waiting for the VP candidate to show. It was really pathetic. Especially when we found out the next day exactly why he was so late.

It's these type of instances and character flaws which cause me pause in supporting Edwards.

Just because his campaign has a strong online operation doesn't mean that he deserves netroots support.

Re (0.00 / 0)
I agree that $400 for a haircut is stupid - for me or you.  He's got the money, I think he has the right to spend it however her wants.  Even if it is overpaying for a haircut.

The question isn't what he's done with the money he's managed to acquire - all of it earned through his professional work - but what he's managed to do with his life.  His poverty center at UNC will have far reaching consequences.  Despite Hillary's high profile, she's not taken any such causes to her heart and Obama hasn't either (though he still might - he's just getting started).

If you're miffed about standing around at an event, I'll remind you that you weren't "forced" to do anything.  Edwards isn't the first politician to be late for an event and he won't be the last.  Seems to me that you might have a bigger beef with the hotel for not providing adequate climate control (i.e., air conditioning) because you can bet they got paid to do so.

A life on the road is difficult and has many challenges.  Keeping yourself in physical shape is one of them.  This is the first time I've heard that referred to as a "character flaw".  If it is, we need about 299 million people in this country to develop varying degrees of character flaws such as that.

And, by the way, I don't think you'll find me saying anywhere that he deserves support because of his online operation.  Instead, you'll continually find me referring people back to the platform of the campaign - after all, that is why we are supposed to vote for someone.  Not their hair.  Not because a hotel didn't provide air conditioning.  Not because of anything except the platform they present and their perceived ability to accomplish it.

I don't believe I've ever said anything else.

Hang on a minute.  I think that going after Edwards for the price of his hair cuts is a cheap shot at best.  Having said so, "A life on the road is difficult and has many challenges.  Keeping yourself in physical shape is one of them."

Can someone get me a chair please?  I'm dizzy from all the spinning.  A candidate can do their time on the treadmill and get to an event (relatively) on time.  It's bad politics not to.  Just like it's bad politics to get overly expensive haircuts while running as a populist.

None of this makes Edwards a bad person.  In fact, I think he's probably one of the better people in this race.  But it does call into question his political instincts, which better be exceptionally good if he wants to be president.

Re (0.00 / 0)
I don't know that it's so much spin.  Perhaps if you can show me the rest of his day's schedule it might help me understand...

Rothman for Edwards? (0.00 / 0)
XPat,

Are you speaking only for yourself in your support for Edwards?  Or is Rothman backing Edwards for President, as well?

I'm a little confused by the disclaimer at the end of your post.

no (0.00 / 0)
He is speaking for himself here. That line about Rothman is in his signature and appears in every comment he posts as a disclaimer.

Re (0.00 / 0)
Congressman Rothman has not indicated who he will support in the Democratic primary.  Whenever I post anything that comes from him, I make sure to indicate that it is officially his statement.

Edwards is not anywhere close to getting my vote.  Obama 08!

Time to Get Mobilized for Edwards (0.00 / 0)
XT is right on the money in getting this venture organized, and he has also been good enough to start the Edwards in NJ yahoogroup (join us if you haven?t done so already: http://groups.yahoo....).

We?ve already begun organizing and fundraising for Edwards to an extent here in South Jersey via his OneCorps online groups; there has been a fundraiser for Edwards in my town alone, and I imagine support for Edwards will continue to grow throughout the state as other Democrats and progressive activists join the campaign.  The round of endorsements, from Sen. Sweeney to Sen. Scutari, etc., last month were a shot in the arm for the Edwards campaign in N.J.

I?m not ready to cede the state to Hillary, especially when we have such a brilliant, idea-driven candidate such as Edwards as the best alternative.
