Primary Nuggets part 1

by: Jay Lassiter

Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 10:14:03 AM EDT

Back in 2005 -- when Asm. Gusciora's "voter paper trail" bill became law -- the long view was for every vote in every precinct in every election to produce a paper record.

Today's primary election marks an important step in the law going "primetime" and statewide in time for the 2008 presidental primary elections next February.  Today's primary in Warren County will provide a test case.

Gusciora:

Warren County residents tomorrow have a chance to blaze a paper trail for all New Jersey citizens who are now casting ballots with electronic voting machines.  Voter-verified ballots are the only efficient means of ensuring precision, integrity and security in this age of computer-software-aided election machines.

Having a paper record just makes sense. I figure it's the same courtesy you might expect at an ATM machine?

And remember: (0.00 / 0)
The Warren Cty. Machines are made by a Princeton company, created by old AT&T engineers, and it uses Linux as its operating system.

An overall strategy for far better voting machines, by far.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

oh no he didn't!

ATM comparison (0.00 / 0)
Be careful about comparing a voter verified paper record to what you get from an ATM. The technology is similar, but the paper record when you vote cannot be taken with you, like you would with an ATM. It is kept by the machine in case a recount is needed or for random auditing. But the user is able to verify that what is on the paper is indeed the way they intended to vote.

bad metaphor? (0.00 / 0)
duly noted, but i usually don't take my ATM receipt with me either.  i give it a look and throw it away.

but that little glance makes me feel better.  makes me feel more secure.  i feel that peace of mind is a courtesy every consumer (or voter) deserves.

Actually, its not that bad of a comparison (0.00 / 0)
I used to work for a company that serviced ATM machines. Every machine has a paper record stored in the machine other than the receipt given to the customer. This is why there is the comparison with ATM's, but I understand your concern in making that comparison.

Now my friends, I am opposed to the system of society in which we live today, not because I lack the natural equipment to do for myself but because I am not satisfied to make myself comfortable knowing that there are thousands of my fellow men who suffer

Voter verification in Warren County (4.00 / 1)
I voted today and the system worked just fine. But honestly, I don't see this as an improvement over the old optical scanning system we had, which kept the original ballot after scanning.

The old machines were smaller, simpler, far less costly, and less intimidating to those unfamiliar with the technology.

Not to be a curmudgeon, but replacing the old machines with these monsters was kind of a waste.

and presumably.... (0.00 / 0)
...hanging chads were kind of a waste too.

We didn't have punch card ballots (0.00 / 0)
We simply filled in a space with pencil and fed the paper into an optical scanner. Was it perfect? No, but neither is the new system.

Just to play devil's advocate: do these types of machines make it easier for people with disabilities to vote?

disabled voters... (0.00 / 0)
somehow i doubt it.  in many cases we're struggling with the basics like parking spots and ramps and such.

they needed the new machines for the disabled (0.00 / 0)
Warren county switched to the Avanti from the paper ballot/op scan system  for the audio function.

Just like working in the bathroom, voting isn't over until the paperwork is done.

It was great to vote today (0.00 / 0)
Beautiful day.  No opposed races, but we are getting ready for a strong challenge to Republicans this fall!
