Mr. 12 - 1: Scott Garrett vs. the New Jersey Delegation

by: Scott Weingart

Thu May 31, 2007 at 09:58:45 PM EDT

We are 425 roll call votes into the 110th Congress, and already, Scott Garrett (R- Wantage Alabama) has voted against the rest of New Jersey delegation 39 times.  On 22% of the roll call votes on which the delegation was split, Garrett was a lone dissenter.

Here is a sampling of his most disgraceful solo votes in the first five months of 2007:

Garrett alone among Northeastern Republicans voted against lowering interest rates on student loans.  Later in the session, he voted to cut aid to college students in the district of Columbia.  He also opposed forgiving student loans of Head Start teachers, Prosecutors and Public Defenders.  Speaking of the Head Start Program, he voted with a minority of Republicans opposing a package of reforms to that program.  In just one day, Garrett voted against science education and scientific research, opposing two measures even a majority of the far-right Republican Study Committee support.  Later in the session, he voted to cut funds to the National Science Foundation, twice.

Garrett's voting record is simultaneously anti-labor and anti-business.  He voted against protecting whistleblowers from vengeful employers, and against a fair minimum wage.  He then turned on the small business owners by opposing bipartisan small business tax cuts and improvements to small business loans.

Garrett supported cockfighting and the commercial slaughter of wild horses.  Hardly a "compassionate conservative", Garrett voted twice against Hurricane Katrina victims.  And, in perhaps the ugliest vote he cast this year, he joined just two other Republicans to oppose naming a post office after retired Congressman Lane Evans, who is suffering from Parkinsons Disease.

And we haven't even reached June yet.

Tell you what... (4.00 / 1)
Those votes on small business tax cuts and business loans are powerful juju. THAT will resonate across the district. He should be pilloried with that.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

I knew his district was conservative (0.00 / 0)
but certainly, it's not completely off the deep end like Garrett. I suppose if there was a House Resolution opposing the kicking of puppies, he'd probably vote no on that one too.

The Humane Society Legislative Fund also criticized Garrett for voting against a 2006 law requiring state and local agencies to provide disaster planning for pets, following the consequences of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. That legislation passed on May 22, 2006 with 349 yes votes and 24 no votes.

Scott Garrett Hates Your Dog.

[flash adorable puppy picture]

Garrett says he's standing up for your values, but in Congress, he's voted for animal cruelty and against letting you save your dog in a natural disaster.

[splice natural disaster footage with sad-looking puppy pictures]

Scott Garrett says he represents you. But Scott Garrett hates puppies.

[insert more adorable puppy pictures]

You don't hate puppies, do you?

That bill with cockfighting covered dog fighting as well.

Well Researched... (4.00 / 1)
...and well stated.  Good posting.

Oh my gosh (0.00 / 0)
And I thought Ferguson was bad (he is).

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
for posting a comprehensive description of our Representative.  The 5th is actually moderately Republican.  Garrett is so out of line with the folks he is supposed to represent.  It is sad when you don't even bother writing to your representative because you know - like Bush - he will ignore all reason.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Garrett is so pathetic (0.00 / 0)
And what's pathetic is that the voters of NJ 5 will care more about tax cuts for small businesses (which Garrett voted against) than slaughtering horses and reducing student loan interest rates...

I love NJ, but I really hate the 5th district - and most of Bergen County in general (I've lived there my entire life).

Down near Rutgers in New Brunswick - where I attend - it is so much more progressive.  Garrett is horrible...

i read this.... (4.00 / 1)
...all the way down in Cherry Hill and i think to myself that if there was one seat that we need to flip in our delegation, it's this one.

let's assume the statewide progressive community had to triage the situation and pick one candidate to focus on on '08.  as much as i like the idea of a post saxton or ferguson era and all that, i feel that the best chance we have for a flip is to pick one scalp and concentrate our powers on that one incumbent.  the choice (for me) is clearly scott garrett.

it's an easy choice based on the reasons outlined in this thoughtful post.

Don't forget his support of price gouging oil companies (0.00 / 0)
He voted against the Federal Price Gouging Prevention Act, which passed the house by a 2/3 majority, with only Garrett and Sir Rodney voting against it from Jersey.

I only included votes... (0.00 / 0)
where Garrett went against the entire NJ delegation.

OK, so who has the video (4.00 / 2)
of Garrett's backyard dog on cock fighting tournaments? I'd say we could start a business selling the videos, but I'm not sure we'd make it without his support of small business tax cuts. On the plus side, we could pay the Garrett Dog-Cock Fights, Inc. employees next to nothing, discriminate and harrass 'em like crazy- without fear of whistleblowers. Oh, well. I'm off to eat some wild horse burgers for lunch. Horses, by the way, are made almost entirely of cheese. Seriously. I learned that in science class.

thanks for the post but let's try for lucky 13 (0.00 / 0)
His lone vote against the Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Which will provide for 150,000 units of Affordable Housing in the country.  The first round of money going to Louisianna and Missippi to rebuild after Katrina.

This fund would provide low rate mortgages and many other forms of assistance to renters, a group often forgotten in the dialog surrounding housing affordability.

I agree this guy needs to go.  I never thought I'd say this but he makes my Congressman look centerist (MIKE FERGUSON)

Bingo! I just came up with the frame! (0.00 / 0)
" According to Congressional Records, Scott Garrett voted AGAINST small business tax cuts and small business loans, while he lives on an X acre farm in Wantage, for which he pays X dollars a year in taxes, because he planted some pine trees."

Finish it with a kicker line and you have a radio spot.

Sorry I can't come up with the figures. I did the oppo on this subject once, but when a guy starts getting older, the mind is the third thing to go, the knees are the second and gentlemen don't talk about the first. ;-)

Scott (4.00 / 1)
I commend you on a well thought out and well written piece on Garrett.

I hope to use your diaries, as well as those of Fretz and the ones on Retire Garrett as basis for my Letters to the Editor, and whatever else I write, during the summer and fall in my northern Passaic community.

Interestingly, a lot of people don't have computers in WM. (The public library, with its pathetic funding, does its best.)  So, people get their news and views from the Record and the Star Ledger and the 3 weekly fish wraps and maybe NJN news. Not so good for a diversified viewpoint.

A lot of people care about New Orleans and Katrina, but they don't care that much.  But they do care about small business issues, slaughtering of wild horses, cockfighting and dogfighting, and maybe even grants and loans for their kids to go to college.

So keep on keepin' on, Scott, and everyone else.

And Blue Jersey, keep a file folder for the Garrett votes, etc. so we/us nerds can find it when we need it.
