'No sex offenders here!'

BRIDGETON -- The city and Third District state legislators are organizing a rally for Saturday, May 19, to oppose the state Department of Corrections' potential relocation of 350-plus sex offenders to South Woods State Prison, Mayor Jim Begley announced on Tuesday.

The rally would be staged on Burlington Road, across the street from South Woods, and is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

The South Jersey Democratic Legislators led by State Senator Sweeney have drawn a line in the sand with the Department of Corrections and Corzine's Comissioner George Hayman.

They are tired of having no South Jersey representation inside the higher echelon of DOC and they feel they were being backdoored on this move of the Civilly Committed Sex Offenders.

The anger will be directed at DOC and Hayman , but it will be Corzine who will feel the political pressure. The South Jersey Democrats found out that $8 million was put aside in the Billion dollar Corrections budget to have inmates moved and clear space for the Civilly Committed Sex Offenders.

The South Jersey Democrats will do everything they can to have that money taken out of the budget, even if it means a budget fight.

Corzine better put this fire out quick before it spreads to Trenton and the budget talks.

Freeholders protest new DOC facility

BRIDGETON -- The Cumberland County Board of Freeholders are calling on residents to oppose a rumored plan to house 358 sex offenders at South Woods State Prison.

The board unanimously passed a resolution at Thursday's meeting that "strongly" opposes any plan to house the non-releasable offenders at the South Burlington Road prison.

The department says a decision has not been made at this point.

However, Sen. Stephen Sweeney, D-3, believes the DOC has already decided on the move, but delaying an announcement to avoid public scrutiny.

A protest rally is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday May 19, at the industrial park across from the prison.

Majority Leader Sweeney? (0.00 / 0)

Sweeney mulls bid for Majority Leader
By Wally Edge - May 15, 2007 - 7:07am

There's a new candidate for State Senate Majority Leader: Stephen Sweeney.  The two-term Gloucester County Democrat has begun seeking support for the post, according to South Jersey political leaders familiar with Sweeney's plans.

Sweeney could be formidable, especially if South Jersey expands the size of the Senate Democratic Caucus.  Polls conducted by both parties show Democratic challengers leading incumbent GOP Senators in the first and second districts.  There are currently four Southern Democratic Senators in Trenton.

Majority Leader Bernard Kenny is not seeking re-election to the Senate this year.  Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman John Adler, Senate Health Committee Chairman Joseph Vitale, and Paul Sarlo of Bergen County are also mulling bids for the leadership post.  If Sweeney runs, look for Adler to step aside.

This is one more reason why the Anti-Corrections Department Rally this Saturday in Cumberland County is so important politically.

How would it look if DOC Commissioner George Hayman successfully forced the Sex Offender Unit into Sweeney's District? That rally will unify the South Jersey Democratic Party into a force that will be difficult to reckon with.

What will Corzine do?
