Dems Sweep in Evesham

by: Juan Melli

Tue May 08, 2007 at 08:35:40 PM EDT

Democrat Randy Brown defeated Evesham Mayor Gus Tamburro by 3,690 to 3,463 to become mayor of the largest municipality in Burlington County. Brown's running mates Chris Brown and John McKenna defeated Republicans Bonnie Olt and Cliff Richards by roughly 3,500 to 2,800 to pick up two seats on the town council.

Democrats used an innovative real-time voter data Blackberry system to help pull off the victory. Poll workers checked off voters as they arrived and those in the field were able to instantly receive the updated information and better target voters. "Maybe we'll have to call them 'Blueberries' instead of Blackberries since they were an effective tool for Democrats," said Democratic party Chairman Joe Cryan.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Blueberries indeed (0.00 / 0)

I got to canvass a precinct in the late afternoon/early evening. I have to say, the Blackberry system I used was absolutely awesome-- easily the best, most up to date, and most user-friendly GOTV technology I've ever used on a canvass!

In addition to that, there was a real air of change among the Evesham voters I talked to tonight. Whether Democrats or Republicans, many of these residents were fed up with Tamburro's cavalier MO-- general indifference to being accountable to his employers (the people) and the prevalence of no-bid contracts and poor financial management.

Congrats to Brown, McKenna, and Brown and the rest of the Evesham Democratic team that helped make this a victory! Woo!

Could you be so kind... (0.00 / 0)

As to post an outline of just how these Blackberrys were used to do this voodoo they did so well? I am more interested in the methods, from a software POV, to see if there are other methods and software tools that might be used to do the same thing.

Up here in Warren Cty, we seem to have a paucity of Crackberrys about. But no shortage of cellulars, laptops, home computers and the like. I am sure that similar exists in other places. If the methods used are known, then that knowledge might be levereged with other software. That could be useful in areas or in campaigns where Blackberry's aren't so common.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Lack of Blackberry's (0.00 / 0)
All blackberry's that are needed for an election are provided by the vendor.  The campaign does not need any of its own.

Don't forget (0.00 / 0)

This is also the largest town in the 8th LD where there will be 3 open seats in November currently held by Republicans.  What a great Special/non-partisan season for NJ Dems.  (so happy its over)

Re: Don't forget (0.00 / 0)
It's also a traditionally huge Republican area in NJ-03. Menendez won it in 2006, and Rich Sexton lost by about 1,000 votes. Jim Saxton should be worried about what tonight's results spell out for him in 2008.

Conrads to the Evesham Democrats! (0.00 / 0)

I was down in Evesham for a few hours this afternoon helping with GOTV.   First i want to Congratulate Brown/McKenna/Brown for their fantastic victory in Saxton's backyard!   I saw how hard their team was working today and had no doubt they would win :)

Second, maybe i'm in the minority here, but i wasn't too wild about the blackberry technology.  In my first precinct, for instance, only 17 or 156 had voted when i started canvassing.  I found it was taking far longer to look up the few individuals who we would not need to hit, instead of just hitting all the houses on our list.

I ended up ditching the blackberry for the rest of my canvass (and for the next precinct i canvassed) and thought i moved far faster.  oh well, maybe i'm just not good with the blackberries :)

Trickle-down politics (0.00 / 0)

Along with congratulations to the winners and to the activists who pulled off those victories, let's not forget the role of the NJ State Democratic Committee--here and in Morris County earlier in the year.  The leadership is taking Howard Dean's 50-state strategy and applying it successfully to our own legislative districts and municipal races.

"All politics is local" is often cited--and it isn't really true.  One of the things we have been seeing is increasing voter disenchantment with the direction the country has been going in and the Bush administration in general.  This should not be overlooked when we examine local election results.

On the other hand, it is true that "all political activity is local."  No matter how much is spent on TV and other media, including mailings, it's boots on the ground and real people on the phones that get our message out and get voters to the polls.  I too am intrigued by the "blueberry" phenomenon--it seems like an investment that really pays off--but again, without the people to do the work, the technology is wasted.

Bravos to all!  Let's keep it up!
