Huge Upset Win for Dems in Morris Twp

by: Juan Melli

Tue May 01, 2007 at 08:51:33 PM EDT

Tonight, Jeff Grayzel became the first Democrat elected to the Morris Township Council in over 30 years. With one precinct remaining, Grayzel is ahead by almost 500 votes. Watch out Michael Carroll and Rick Merkt!

Jeff Grayzel said tonight: "We've been telling people change is coming, change is coming. Well change is here."

The final tally with all 23 precincts in:

    Jeff Grayzel (D)   55.5% (2227)
    Joe Calvanelli (R) 44.5% (1786)
This is the first time since Watergate that a Democrat was elected in Morris Township, which is considered a bellwether town. 1974 was also the last year that Democrats won an Assembly seat in the 25th.

Congrats Jeff! (4.00 / 6)

We are so proud of you Jeff! Your victory is well-deserved.  I know that you will do an excellent job representing the people of Morris Township.  The transparency you will bring to the board will allow for better government all around and will have a real effect on people's communities.

Jeff and I have been together on the Democratic line in the general election for the past two years.  The only downside to this is I will miss running with him on the Democratic line together again this year!

wow (4.00 / 3)
I think this is the first periwinkle comment ever. I have no idea how you did that, but I'm somewhat impressed.

That looks like a blow out for Jeff, Congrats (4.00 / 2)
Props to Chip Robinson, the Canvass Meister of Morris County. 56/44 is big, HUGE ! ! This is great.

Way to go! (4.00 / 2)
Congratulations!!!

One Vote. Yours. It really does matter.

Wow! (4.00 / 1)

What an amazing win! It's wonderful for Jeff and Morris Township, but also an inspiration to others of us in Red areas. With the great special elections results we've had this year, now we know we can succeed in getting some more of Red Jersey to turn blue!

Pretty damn impressive. (0.00 / 0)

I have been expecting some turnaround in Morris Cty. for a while now, but this is great. I really hope that this translates into real changes at the county office level.

On the other hand, you'll know you have really started the ball rolling when you see the same results in Chester and Washington Twp. ;-)

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

VICTORY is SWEET! (4.00 / 1)

To all those blue jersey types and others around the state who gave us your time, your money and your moral support:

Thank you so very much!   I've been living in Morris Township for 28 years, and at long last I have a Democrat representing me on the council!   There are many in our town who have waited decades and decades for this moment.   This shows what we can do when we have a goal, and work together to achieve it!   Jeff will be a voice on our council for open space, open government and good government for years to come!

The 50-state strategy works when we all put our minds to it, we can win in even the reddest of areas.

up next:  taking out Carroll and Merkt

Chip Robinson

28 year Morris Township resident :)

Congrats to Jeff & Chip (0.00 / 0)

How sweet it is......

Congratulations Morris Dems! (4.00 / 1)

What is really impressive is it appeared that Democrats across the state rallied to help. We at NJ Stonewall got an alert from the NJDSC, we sent it to our members and supporters and I saw that other Democratic organizations did it as well.

Imagine what we can do if we all worked together?

Great win, but "bellwether"? (4.00 / 1)
A bellwether is an entity (state, county or town) which has a propensity for supporting victorious candidates; think of it as a toss-up district which uncannily reflects the electoral mood.  Morris Twp., on the other hand, is one of the reddest towns in this very red county.  This makes Grayzel's victory all the more impressive, but not a bellwether.  Instead, I hope it's a harbinger of things to come in other towns which have historically been solidly GOP.

Not really... (0.00 / 0)

Morris Township is actually one of the more Democratic municipalities in the County.  For Kerry in 2004, Morris Township was the 6th strongest town in Morris County behind Victory Gardens, Dover, Morristown, Madison, and Parsippany.

It is a bellwether in the 25th district because the result there usually predicts the district-wide result to within 2%.  It generally votes about 1% more Democratic than the entire 25th district.
