Sex Offenders/South Jersey

The Department of Corrections tried to pull a " fast one" but got caught. This will be a huge political issue in both the First and Third Legislative Districts.

Worst sex offenders here soon?

TRENTON -- State Sen. Stephen M. Sweeney on Monday blasted the state Department of Corrections for a plan that could bring hundreds of the state's worst sex offenders to Cumberland County.

South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton is among the sites the DOC is considering for a facility that would house civilly committed sex offenders, who have served their sentences but are considered too dangerous to be released.

The 358 offenders currently are held in segregated units at prisons in Rahway and Kearny, both in northern New Jersey. But the expanding population has outgrown those facilities, said DOC spokeswoman Deirdre Fedkenheuer.

The issue surfaced Monday during state budget hearings in Trenton.

Well that... (0.00 / 0)

What do you propose the state do with these folks, as they are being held past the end of their sentence?

Reality (0.00 / 0)

The State must " house " these people by law.

They should not house them in South Jersey at an existing prison. There are other options. It makes no sense to disrupt the largest prison when they can house them in a smaller" out of the way" prison like MidState that is located near Fort Dix.

This is a case of sticking it to South Jersey. Sweeney and the rest of them in Cumberland County will fightthis to the death.

It is not too often that you see a powerful Democratic State Senator square off against a Commissioner who works for a Democratic Governor.

But this is what is happening in Cumberland County.

Sweeney has been on TV, in the press, and on the radio. He is adamant about not having the Civilly Committed Sex offender Unit moved to his District.

The DOC Commissioner is quickly learning that you do not try to embarrass a State Senator in an election year by " sneaking in " a Sex offender Unit to his District.

How is this embarassment? (0.00 / 0)

It's law that these people must be incarcerated. The state has a prison down there to keep them.

Actually, this sounds like a lot of crap to me. It's not as if these people are going to be walking the streets.

And no, I do not agree with this "civil commitment" stuff. Making people serve much longer sentences, based upon vague and subjective criteria smacks of something less than American. Slippery slopes and all that.

You are welcome to have them in your backyard.

These are the " worst of the worst".

Thankfully State Senator Sweeney and the other South Jersey Reps have said , " No Way".

This came from the Vineland Daily Journal on this past Thursday.

Corzine is going to have a " southern revolt" if he does not get his DOC Commissioner to back off on this plan to move sex offenders into Cumberland County.

It is a regional issue right now but it wiil not be for long. Corzine needs Southern votes for his budget.

Sweeney said he made the plans public so people would put pressure on the DOC to switch the location.

"I don't think Cumberland County wants to be known as a home for sexual predators in the state," he said.

On Tuesday, Vineland City Council is expected to pass a resolution urging the state to remove Cumberland County from consideration as a potential location for the facility.

"It appears these decisions are made in spite of what people in the county want," Councilman James Forcinito, a retired Vineland police captain, said during a work session Thursday.

U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo, R-2, and District 1 legislators Sen. Nick Asselta, Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Jeff Van Drew all have voiced opposition to the proposal.
