Dunkin Donuts pulls "Jersey Guys" ad slots

by: Jay Lassiter

Wed Apr 25, 2007 at 05:41:01 PM EDT

"Two leading corporations and the state have now found the Jersey Guys hateful speech too much to ignore any longer. Hopefully, more and more advertisers will reach the same conclusions as Dunkin' Donuts and realize that Carton and Rossi's brand of infantile antics are not deserving of their advertising dollars."
--Assemblyman Fred Caraballo

Surely you all remember the latest drivel to come through the airways via the Jersey Guys of 101.5.  Just to recap, NJ's most infamous talk radio clowns decided it would be hilarious to have their listeners call in to report anyone they thought might be an illegal immigrant.  Dubbed "La Cucha Gotcha," and scheduled to run through Cinco de Mayo, this was clearly a swipe at anyone one with a Latino name or accent.

Assemblyman Caraballo immediately responded to the assult with a campaign to urge the show's advertisers to take their business dollars elsewhere.

Dunkin Dunuts was the latest big contract to walk -- following AT+T and the State of NJ -- and taking their dollars with them.  Dunkin Donuts' reason for pulling their ads was simple: the Jersey Guys' drivel simply "does not reflect the point of view of Dunkin' Donuts and our commitment to the Hispanic community."

Props to El Diario who broke this news earlier today.  They deserved the scoop since it was their readers (namely Spanish speakers) who were being singled out for what?  Their accent?  Their last name?

Bigger props to Asm. Caraballo for siezing on this opportunity to take the Jersey Guys to task and for reminding big companies that good corporate citizenship means not subsidizing bigotry.

I would like to think that these chuckleheads are gonna go bye-bye, but I ain't holdin' my breath.

But, if the good people of the Hispanic community pressure advertisers...

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

How about (4.00 / 1)
the good people of the non-Hispanic community pressuring advertisers as well?

That some pressure needs to be put on some of his Democratic colleagues who are happy to join the Jersey Guys and their racist, bigoted show to promote their political goals.

The Jersey Guys started their "Coalition Against Corrupt Politicians" scam and gotten a lot of politicians to sign on.  Never mind that these radio morons mock Asians (ask Edison Mayor Jun Choi), ask people to spy on Hispanics ("La Cucha Gotcha") and are rude, abusive, sexist every day of the week.

There's Acting Governor and Senate President Dick Codey, who joined up saying, "I'll join with one stipulation that I'm President and US Attorney Chris Christie is Vice President ... and we can flip flop every year."

Then there's State Senator Joe Vitale (D) who represents a large Latino population in Perth Amboy, and the other towns of the 19th.  I'm sure his constituents would like to know he is joining the founders of "La Cucha Gotcha."

And Senator Jon Adler, chair of the Judiciary Committee, has also signed on to CACP.  Usually a fairly reasonable, smart and politic guy, he's decided to throw in with the Jersey Guys, too.

The only other Democrat to get sucked in to this is Mine Hill Twp Council President Marc Sovelove who, well, I don't know why he joined.

These folks should wonder why of the few dozen members they are the only Democrats involved in CACP while the rest are all Republicans or rightist independents.

If Codey, Vitale and Adler (and Sovelove) think it is OK to hang out and give their authority to the Jersey Guys, then I think their voters deserve to know about it.

Maybe a billboard: Codey, Vitale and Adler support the Jersey Guys' La Cucha Gotcha effort to profile Hispanics!

Vitale & the Jersey Guys anti-immigrant stance (0.00 / 0)
They should definitely be called on it.

Sen. Vitale was oh so politically correct in taking over the mayorship of Woodbridge last June.  He declined to take on a permanent dual-office holding position.

Council President Patricia Osborne, who was entitled to the office until the committee could convene (apparently only because some last minute papers didn't have time to be drawn up, which would have circumvented her 8 days in office all together, since Vitale was a favorite of the late mayor).  The committee annointed Vitale who vowed only to hold the position until the election, and the annointed candidate was soon-to-be Mayor McCormac.

Why am I not surprised to hear that he is backing the Jersey guys, despite their racism and the ethnic make-up of his district?

Good corporate decision! (0.00 / 0)
Dunkin' Donuts does a lot of Spanish language billboard advertising of the type that so infuriates wingnutty Steve Lonegan, although a giant photo of an iced latte is easy enough even for him to understand.

NJ 101.5 .... Turn It Off (3.00 / 1)
I don't listen to NJ 101.5 so I don't know who advertises there. But as a gay man, I've been acutely aware of the hateful behaviors of Dennis 'n' Judy, and the Jersey Guys, for a LOOOONG time ... and I'm sorry it's taken swipes at the mentally ill (Gov. Codey's wife post-partum depression campaign), and Asian-, Hispanic-, and African-Americans, women in general, and who knows who all else -- everyone except the 18-to-35 year-old suburban middle-income white-male demographic the station targets -- for the rest of the state to finally sit up and take notice.

Boycotting NJ101.5 first came up in my world more than five years ago, and again at the time of Gov. McGreevey's resignation -- when Dennis 'n' Judy were in full homophobic flower, and the Jersey Guys were suggesting a revitalization of that timeless classic childhood game, "Smear the Queer." But the desire to take action never really reached critical mass. Maybe now that so many others are hurt and angry as were were/are, it will.

BUMPERSTICKERS. I've suggested it before, I'll suggest it again. I'd do it myself but I am absolutely unable to afford the initial investment.

First line:

Racism: TURN IT OFF
Sexism: TURN IT OFF
Homophobia: TURN IT OFF
Hate: TURN IT OFF

Second line:

NJ101.5FM: TURN IT OFF

NJ101.5 made its bones in this state rallying opposition to Jim Florio's tax package -- admittedly, Florio left himself open for some stunningly appropriate criticism, and the Millennium Broadcasting people grabbed it and ran with it. Since them, they've been political sacred cows -- few in Trenton really want to cross them.

But if media buyers driving to work could see one in a hundred -- two in a hundred -- ten in a hundred -- cars bearing the same message: NJ101.5: TURN IT OFF -- it could have a very profound impact on where they will spend money to enhance the equity of their brands.

No advertisers, no Dennis 'n' Judy. No Jersey Guys. Someone out there in bluejerseyland could make a buck for some good cause selling the bumperstickers, and it would be very helpful if one of us could imbibe some antinausea medication and spend the morning some time soon noting all the advertisers, so that we can track 'em down and get in touch with them.

Great to hear (0.00 / 0)
I called 101.5 during the time they made the ignorant comments regarding Mrs. Codey, and asked they remove Carton and his sidekick for being just that--ignorant and hate mongering.  They weren't removed because of their high ratings.  I didn't listen to them before and don't now, and so also don't know the advertisers, but with some dropping the station, hopefully enough more will follow and they'll be removed.  Carton is so bad he was fired from other stations, and he's landed here, in NJ.  Maybe if we as consumers contact the station and complain it could help.  But perhaps contacting the advertisers would be even more helpful.

It's about time! (0.00 / 0)
Considering that the straw that broke the camel's back for Imus was an attack on dignified, accomplished people in NJ who were the targets of a brutal, vicious, bigoted attack by an extremely obnoxious Santorum-supporting shock jock, it baffles the mind how these two hatemongers have gotten away with repeated controversies...  they've probably offended just about every community in NJ and I don't understand why it's taken this long for one or two small companies to pull their advertising.  It would have been more impressive had the contracts done the responsible thing before the socio-political-business winds dramatically shifted, and this not been merely the aftermath of the post-Imus era.  Still, I'll take what I can get...
