BCDO Slate to Withdraw in the 37th

by: Juan Melli

Wed Apr 11, 2007 at 06:49:07 PM EDT

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that the BCDO's slate of candidates opposing Loretta Weinberg's team in the 37th may be dropping out. BCDO chairman Joe Ferriero and Governor Corzine will hold a press conference at the BCDO headquarters in Hackensack on Thursday at 1:30pm noon to announce that the Wides/Zisa/Wilson ticket will withdraw in favor of the Weinberg/Huttle/Johnson team.

Update: PoliticsNJ confirms the news. So does the Record. This is curious, isn't it?

In February, a poll paid for by the Weinberg campaign and posted on a liberal Web site suggested that Weinberg had a 44 percentage-point lead over Wildes, 64 percent to 20 percent.

"If there was polling showing her with 64 percent of the vote, she's clearly unbeatable," said Rick Shaftan, a Republican strategist. [...]

Meanwhile, the county party appeared to be behind a recent campaign encouraging Republicans in the district to register as Democrats and vote for Wildes in the primary.

Update 2: Teaneck Blog gives their take:

The most relieved people in Teaneck may be found in the Municipal Building, where certain Council members may be pleased that they will not be called upon to risk crossing constituents by bashing Weinberg & Co. in a compulsory public demonstration of loyalty to Joseph Ferriero and the BCDO. Phew!

Sensible decision (2.00 / 1)
Presumably, Ferriero realized his candidates didn't have a chance. Many of us were amazed that Ferriero could be impractical enough to run candidates against such popular incumbents in the first place.

That being said, it'll be nice if this turns out to be true. (I'd heard rumors earlier today as well.) This was going to be a tough battle, against very deep pockets. Better to save the money & effort for the general election.

Polling Data showed the could not win. (0.00 / 1)
Apparently, the polling data was overwhelmingly against Wildes and there was mass confusion and chaos within the campaign.

Huge embarassment for the BCDO.

There's Joy in Teaneck (0.00 / 0)
What a terrific outcome for progressives throughout New Jersey. This is truly a statewide victory.

Where to next?
;)

Good call, Joe (0.00 / 0)
This has apparently been in the works for weeks. Good to see Joe get some well deserved pushback from some really tough competitors.

One question, though - what happens to all of those candidates for county office that Loretta was backing? Did they just get the shaft? I notice all of the Weinberg backers are awfully quiet tonight.

A huge victory for progressives - and another huge victory for Blue Jersey (0.00 / 0)
This is thrilling news for Loretta, Valerie and Gordon and the causes we passionately believe in.  This is thrilling news for the many progressive organzations, including my own, who stood the machine down.  And this is especially thrilling news for the Blue Jersey community, which stood steadfastly for Loretta, Valerie and Gordon day in and day out.  Another historic victory for all of us -- all of YOU, brother and sister Blue Jersey bloggers.  As a resident of the 37th district who loves Loretta like a mom (well, more) and has come to know and love Valerie and Gordon as well, I'm overjoyed.  Thank you.  Baruch Hashem.

Good news! (4.00 / 1)
We can support Loretta and Valerie and go to work for women in contested and challenger races around that State.  It's my understanding that women have more opportunities here since, say 1925.

This is such good news. (3.67 / 3)
Good for Chairman Joe Ferriero for making this decision.

I hope it repairs and strengthens the Democratic movement in the Bergen County both sides love so much.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Don't worry - we're definitely still here (0.00 / 0)
Waiting on official word.  We have learned to be wary when it comes to pronouncements by the Ferriero camp.  But apparently we seem to have gotten Joe's full attention :)

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
