Thursday News Roundup

  • The first black legislator to be elected to serve in Trenton was former Assemblyman Dr. Walter Gilbert Alexander, of Orange, NJ.  The son of former slaves, Alexander was elected in 1920 and served for two term.  Governor Corzine honored Asm. Alexander and former Senator Dr. Hutchins F. Inge, of Newark yesterday in an event meant to remember our state's first black legislators.  Five points to anyone who can name a current member of the legislature who -- like Alexander and Inge -- is a physician.

  • Kids in Hunterdon County are less likely to grow up near or below the poverty line than their counterparts in Cumberland County.  The Association for Children of New Jersey takes a look at all twenty-one NJ counties and ranks them according to the well-being of the children who live there.  Take a look.

  • Hearings may be in order to address the latest pension shortfall in New Jersey.  This time it's the teachers who are in the cross hairs.  If ever there were a moment for Assembly Budget Chair Lou Greenwald (D-Norcrossburg) to step up and prove to his constituents he has some cajones, this is the one.

  • Video Lottery Terminals at the Meadowlands? We may have no choice on the matter.  Read it and cringe.

  • The Governor is coming to Burlington County next week to talk about the budget.  April 11th at 7pm to be precise. The event is opent to the public, but registration is required.  Call Corzine's office at (609) 777-0994 for more info or to RSVP.

  • Last but not least, it's never to early to think about the next big fashion trend.  And as we all know, politics is a lot like fashion: one day you're in, and the next you're out.  So what's en vogue for spring?  Why the Blue Jersey T-Shirt, of course.  What other accessory makes you look so chic while reminding others that the truth does indeed have a liberal bias?  Get yours now!

What's on your mind today, folks?  The floor is yours!

    Assemblyman Herb Conaway (0.00 / 0)
is a doctor and a lawyer- now that's serious naches!

    Other physicians (0.00 / 0)
Eric Munoz (R-21) is a trauma surgeon at University Hospital (and from what I've been told, not a very good one).

Jeff Van Drew (D-1), Jerry Cardinale (R-39), and Joe Pennachio (R-26) are all dentists.

And before anyone else suggests it, chiropractors are not physicians, so Frank Blee (R(ish)-2) does not make the cut.

    wow so many physicians! (0.00 / 0)
i didn't know there were so many physicians in state congress!  that's sweet! (not that i have any vested interest) :>

I don't know which way these physicians lean (i think i know about one of them) but we've gotta have the left leaning ones in, and restore some integrity to medicine in the process.  and hopefully there aren't any Tom Coburn, MD's in the house.

FDR never introduced a universal health care bill BECAUSE the day before he was going to introduce it, he had dinner with a physician (who was in some way a relative) who said boy don't do that.

Cure This! -- let's talk health and heatlh justice

    Whadda ya' know? (0.00 / 0)
Warren County is #1 in percentage of households paying more than 30% of monthly income on rent.

Warren County is finally #1 in something in NJ. Too bad we cannot celebrate that fact.

You can chalk that up to the real estate churn out here on rental properties. We have been inundated by people armed with money or creative financing and Carlton Sheet's 12 Tapes of Satan. Of course, the property tax and school funding problems exacerbate this greatly.

As far as the unemployment figures are concerned, there is something hinky about that one. The people at Warren County Temporary Assistance and at the state labor office are overwhelmed with new applications and caseloads. I would posit that there is something flawed in the computation of those figures. It might be added that jobs, in the county, are few and pay horribly, since most employers have the ingrained attitude that "it's cheaper to live in Warren County". Nothing could be farther from the truth.

One more point: it is evident, from the median income, that certain communities in the county are drastically skewing the median income figures. There is a ridiculous amount of poverty and the cocomittant social problems and stratification out here.

But, I suppose that is a sad nationwide trend, n'cest pas?

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

    "cajon" (0.00 / 0)
a big box, and figuratively, a coffin.

I don't care if the legislature have cajones any more than I care which ones are doctors.

Actually, I don't care if they have testicles either, and I tend to favor the ones who don't.
