The United States Department of Justice will

announce that it is firing 85 federal prosecutors this Monday morning, BlueJersey has learned. The prosecutors, all of whom receive salaries in excess of $100,000, are being dismissed to make way for lower-paid attorneys as part of an effort to trim the federal budget. The new hires would receive starting salaries of $8 per hour, and contribute 5% toward their health care premiums.

A source inside the New Jersey U.S. Attorney's Newark office, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Christopher Christie is cleaning out his desk. "The mood here is pretty glum. We weren't expecting this, especially after what we did for [gubernatorial candidate Tom Kean] Junior in 2005." Christie had been considered the front-runner for the 2009 Republican nomination for governor of the Garden State.

The significance of the news was not lost on BlueJersey Investigative Reporter huntsu, who noted, "This is the first time a leak from Christie's office was not related to the investigation of a Democrat during an election cycle. Apparently, being a loyal Bushie has its limits when your job is on the chopping block."

In late 2006 and earlier this year, a total of eight federal prosecutors were let go in a move that was widely criticized by Democrats as politically motivated. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has described the ensuing scandal as "an overblown personnel matter."

The additional firings would appear to affect all prosecutors who were not part of the original wave of dismissals, without regard to loyalty or performance. Spokesmen for both the Department of Justice and the White House declined comment. However, political pundits were quick to weigh in.

Michael Quinn, director of the American Taxpayer Forum (ATF) said that the move made sense. "These prosecutors were making salaries well above market rates. The President is saving the American taxpayer millions of dollars. That's got to be a good thing."

Regina Sandler, a senior policy fellow at the Eagle Institute of Politics, was more skeptical. "This looks like the latest chapter in the [Bush] administration's ever-changing rationale for Attorneygate. If they think they can stymie investigations into the initial eight [dismissals], they are sadly mistaken. I'd also worry about the effects on the Justice Department in the long term. You just can't get decent lawyers for $8 an hour without outsourcing."

Reached at home just before press time, Mr. Christie's brother Howard K. Christie said, "This news has been a shock to the entire Christie family, especially coming as it did, on April Fools Day."

Hiring Outsourced to Indian Search Firm (4.00 / 1)
The staffing of the prosecutor positions has been outsourced to Spam International Recruiters, the largest recruiting firm in India.  "As knowledge of American law is becoming less important as a reqirement, graduates of Indian law schools can easily fill these positions."  The first prosecutor, Makem Singh, has already been hired.

What's more... (0.00 / 0)
Some of the new federal prosecutors don't even have to move to the US, say federal sources, so that will aid in solving our immigration problem.  "Especially in New Jersey," said one, "so much of their work has been done through the media, there's little need for them to spend any time in this country except perhaps to appear at an occasional Republican fundraiser."

Another Washington insider who requested anonymity hinted that federal recruiters are reaching out to other countries for new hires.  "It will certainly improve our relations with Syria," he said, "and produce better results, since their interrogation techniques are so effective."

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."  (Teddy Roosevelt)

It's a little vague (0.00 / 0)
I interpreted it as 5% of their salaries, so they'd really only be making $7.60/hour after the health care contribution (before taxes). I think that's still better than Wal-Mart.

But that's the problem with anonymous sources -- they're vague, non-authoritative, and in most cases they have a bone to pick with someone. Guess we'll have to wait until this morning's official announcement. ;-)
