How Chris Christie Got His Reputation

by: huntsu

(Pop Quiz! -- How many people Chris Christie investigated in Jim McGreevey's governor's office were indicted or convicted? - promoted by huntsu)

One of the main themes of our recent coverage of Chris Christie is his largely undeserved reputation for bipartisan investigations.  For one, his biggest Republican cases -- Treffinger and Monmouth County -- both predate his taking office.  For another, he conveniently does things in September of big election years like drop subpoenas on Bob Menendez's tenants, or say things like this while Jim McGreevey was leaving office:

As recently as July [2004], it appeared that the governor himself was in danger of being indicted. ...

Mr. Christie stoked the speculation during a speech in September by declaring that corruption in the state was pervasive, "from the governor's office to the local school board, and every level in between." Mr. Christie said that he was not accusing Mr. McGreevey specifically of corruption.

Why is this bad?  Because the US Attorney accused the Democratic Governor's office of widespread corruption just before an election though he had not indicted or convicted anyone in that office.  And still hasn't.  US Attorneys shouldn't be implicating people or specific groups unless it's in court, yet Christie felt free to use the papers to smear the whole Governor's office.

Christie has been able to get away with this kind of thing with little impact on his "reputation" because he gets a lot of cover from a media that is sometimes willing to accept his surface image without digging.  Sort of like the beltway media did for Bush from 2001 until recently.

Some in the media are even willing to stretch the truth and make up facts to give Christie his image as a bipartisan crusader.  Some of them like Bob Ingle of Gannett.

Back in March 14, 2005 Ingle counted three arrests among Christie's count of public officials nailed:

Three more busts in Monmouth County brought the score this week to U.S. Attorney Chris Christie 79, Harvey 4.

A year later -- today -- Ingle is now changing the way he describes Christie's record, including all arrests, indictments and convictions under the same category:

Christie has more than 100 convictions and guilty pleas.

Suddenly arrests and indictments have become convictions and guilty pleas.  In one of the most widely read columns in the state.  Out of some weird kind of hero worship, normally reserved for inflating a batting average or ERA of your favorite ballplayer.

When the media starts just accepting "common knowledge" as the truth, and then starts exaggerating to the point of fibbing, then the powerful can get away with using their offices in ways they weren't meant to be used.

Were a US Attorney looking to use his office for partisan gain -- subtly -- this cover would be of immense help.

Again, the evidence is not there that the office has been used improperly, though the more we look the more smoke gathers.  The more smoke gathers the more likely there actually is a fire.

PR, Spin, Hype and Plain Old Self Serving BS.... (0.00 / 0)
...is the answer to your question.

Imagine having the authority and power to investigate corruption that a US attorney has...and then look at what this guy has actually done in NJ.

It's as if they want to give a "PR" impression of fighting corruption while doing as little as possible so as not to upset anyones "revenue streams".

There are many hundreds of honorable courageous honest employees throughout the local, county and state governments (and the private sector) who are trying to "blow whistles" all the time.  All too often these heroic folks are treated like garbage and harassed and destroyed.

The systemic corruption has many cracks in it; instead of real investigations being launched to open up these cracks to get to the rot underneath...we have a situation where the people with the power to act just sit on their hands and occasionally prosecute a blatant or stupid abuse just to keep up the cosmetic impression that they give a crap.

We need whistle blower protection and INCENTIVE laws with razor sharp teeth and great rewards for exposing wrongdoing.  If you give up information that leads to a bust of official corruption; you should be rewarded richly.  It would be cheaper to give every major whistle blower million bucks than to allow the corruption to continue.

Let's "deputize" every employee of every public and private sector operation in the whole state by treating them like the heros they are and by "paying them off" with real money that is well earned!!!

We need to find the people with the MOST integrity and put them in charge.  It will take an army of Ralph Naders to clean up this mess.

The fact that Christie wasn't fired by Bush is a strong indication that he deserves to be fired.

Everyone Bush appointed (0.00 / 0)
is suspect. Bush and corruption are synonymous. Everything the Bush Administration has done revolves around treasury looting and concealing nefarious behavior. If Christie wants a future beyond the Bush Administration he should resign and spill the beans. To be a Republican these days is to admit thought disorders and loose associations. They shouldn't be allowed to drive cars let alone have the public trust.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

Almost 100% Right LOL (0.00 / 0)
They shouldn't be allowed to drive cars let alone have the public trust.

That's a bit much; would you settle for a large tax on gas guzzlers and SUVs that is then turned around and used as tax credits to incentivise the purchase of hybrids/alternate fuel/ electric/high mileage vehicles....

Though in some sense, you were right. I strongly suspect that if/when the full truth ever came out on Bush/Cheney (and many other members of their mis-administration) that they indeed wouldn't be able to drive since they would be in jail.

You people have lost it... (0.00 / 0)
You all claim to be independent-minded, progressive Democrats, but now everyone Bush has appointed is a crook, and Chris Christie is bad even though he has indicted more Republicans than Democrats. Do you really have that much hatred for the other side or arrogance about your own? Let's face it, you may agree with Bob Menendez's politics and think he's a great guy, but he isn't exempt from being looked into. Moreover, you all complain (I believe very unfairly often) about Joe Ferriero, but when someone actually does look into his dealings you call them dirty Republicans. I really think you all have to decide whether you are just Democratic Party hacks or truly independent minded people.

Who is "You People" (0.00 / 0)
Be specific.

Pick out a quote that you disagree with and take specific issue with it...and then, you will get a specific response.

Meanwhile it looks to me like you are trying to to simply "muddy the waters".  Why you would want to do that is an interesting question.

Jill, is that you? (4.00 / 1)
I thought that you left for New Hampshire after last November.

Ignorance is Rant? (0.00 / 0)
Christie has not indicted more Republicans than Democrats.  It's not even close.

That's just like Ingle, where you make up facts to back up what you want to believe.

Do you actually READ the materials on Christie, or do you just decide before hand that I am disingenuous or a party hack?

Please prove that "majority GOP" claim (0.00 / 0)
9thdistrict, do you mean you know for a fact that Christie has successfully prosecuted more than 50 Republicans.  Will you please list them?  Where did you substantiate that fact you allege?

Mere charges against an R or a D isn't the only thing to consider.  I've noticed a difference in the way the cases are pursued.  Christie seems to settle for one R in cases where it seems like he could have nailed many.  In a case like Lynch, he's satisfied with the D but ignores the Rs with suspect dealings with Lynch.

Then there's former Keyport Mayor John Merla, a Republican Christie prosecuted, who seemed so pleased with himself at his sentencing recently that he flipped the bird at everyone as he grinned ear to ear at his supposed hangmen as he entered and left court.  Curious

Smear job on Iglesias in NM press (0.00 / 0)
Last Sunday a real smear job appeared against Iglesias in the Republican Sunday paper in Abq.  There were multiple articles on "reports" of Iglesias' alleged lack of aggressiveness as a prosecutor.  3000 illegal immigration cases on the border don't count as doing one's job.  So he is fired for doing laid back, trivial things like prosecuting border drug rings rather than the really "important" stuff.  The articles followed the same patterns as the attempted yellow journalism about Patricia Madrid.  There was an alleged letter sent complaining of Iglesias' failure to presecute enough cases.  But the article did not mention who wrote the letter or where it was sent.  The articles appeared on the news and editorial pages.  The press had been standing 100% behind Iglesias but someone maneuvered a 180 degree turnaround.  Of course in NM this plays out as "Betrayed by Gringoes.  What Else is New?"
