Op-Ed: Running to Make a Difference

by: Gina Genovese

Sun Mar 11, 2007 at 04:23:36 PM EDT

I am running for the New Jersey State Senate from the 21st district to represent a new kind of politics.  My opponent positions himself as a reformer who stands for clean government, yet runs an extremely dirty campaign.  That paradox, is why too many people of New Jersey have lost faith in the political process.

I am a result of the grassroots movement created by Howard Dean.  His campaign stressed the importance of individual participation in a democracy.  I want to build on that concept of engagement.  This election is about empowerment, not entitlement.  I have worked hard to build a business and a reputation that is based upon empowering my students.  I will carry this same philosophy into state politics.  I want to engage residents in the 21st district who have never been politically active so their voices too, can be heard.

Most people in the 21st district know me from 24 years of guiding their children through their developmental years in my business Gina's Tennis World in Berkeley Heights.  I created a place where people congregate, socialize and develop self-confidence and self-esteem.  This has also been a primary focus in my work as an elected official in Long Hill Township.

I was very proud to have served as the first Democratic mayor of the Republican town, Long Hill Township in Morris County.  Most residents of my town know me as a leader who brings people together and acknowledges the contributions of individuals in our community.  Long Hill Township has continued to be supportive of me and has confirmed that my sexuality has no impact on my ability to serve.

As mayor and committeewoman in Long Hill Township, I organized an interfaith service for peace with various religious leaders in the area.  I developed and taught civics lessons in our local schools.  I cooperatively negotiated a reduction in the police force to save taxpayer dollars without reducing services.  I instituted a business economic forum to support the needs of local businesses.  I worked on both school and municipal budgets to understand the intricacies of how state funding impacts the bottom line.  I opened the budget process to the public so they could understand the costs of services in our community.

Born into a working-class family and today the founder of a business in Union County, I know what it's like to make ends meet and I know what it's like to make payroll.  I have owned and operated Gina's Tennis World in Berkeley Heights since 1983.  The business began with 10 clients, and today has thousands.  Everyday through my business, while working with their children, I hear the hopes and dreams of the people of the 21st district.

They inspire me to work for all the residents of the 21st district:  Democrats, Republicans, Independents, the unaffiliated and the uninterested.  I instinctively know how to bring people of various ideas, traditions, backgrounds and parties to the table to hammer out the best approaches to the problems facing New Jersey today.

Last November we realized the importance of whom we sent to Washington.  This November, it is equally important whom we send to Trenton.  Work with me to build a team that will bring out the best in our state.  I want to lead others to be the best they can be, and together, we will move New Jersey forward.

Best of Luck Gina! (4.00 / 1)
Thank you for putting yourself out there and fighting the fight.  You can be sure that Blue Jersey will be there with you.

Looking forward to this (4.00 / 4)
At the GSE dinner last weekend, when Gina announced her candidacy, the sense of excitement in the room from all corners of the state's activist community was palpable. Of course, the GLBTI community has a special interest in seeing Gina succeed, but this race is about so much more.

Tom Kean Jr is a son of privilege who has never truly earned anything he's ever been given. Gina Genovese is a self-made woman whose work ethic, honesty, and savvy have contributed to her impressive resume -- from successful entrepreneur to Democratic Mayor of a predominantly Republican town. Even in the 21st District, I can't help but thinking this is a recipe for success.

On a more personal note, in 2006, Tom Kean Jr ran a campaign of sleaze, smear, lies, and innuendo. As a Menendez for Senate staffer, I took it very personally. I'm not the only one. There were many, many people on both sides of the political divide disappointed by Junior's conduct during the race. They were expecting the second coming of Tom Kean Sr and instead were met with a virtual clone of George W Bush.

Now that Kean Jr's been exposed for what he really is, it's time for the voters of the 21st District to swap out a self-interested trust-fund baby with a laughable sense of entitlement for a dedicated public servant who has always put the best interests of her constituents first.

Best of luck, Gina. We've got your back.

Yes (4.00 / 1)
Gina Genovese's candidacy will be a unifying point for active progressives all over the state. It matters for a lot of reasons. First and foremost is the desire to see this great breakout candidate become a great breakout legislator. Further down the line is the pure satisfaction of exposing Tom Kean Junior for the dishonest man he has become.

The 21st deserves better. And that's what Gina Genovese will deliver.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Last week Steven Goldstein introduced us to this race...http://www.bluejerse...

A few of us spoke of helping Gina out.  I suspect there are indeed hundreds of progressive activists throughout the New Jersey who would enjoy bringing Scott's excellent articulation from the realm of inspiration into the action arena of working for what we believe in.

I know that the "conventional wisdom" says that Junior keeps his seat; but I believe that's not written in stone and I believe we all can make a difference by finding ways to help  Gina WIN!!!

Gina showed up in support of Loretta Weinberg at the rally in Paramus; let's all of us from all over the state Show Up for Gina!!!

Gina please keep us posted as to any opportunities to help out.  Obviously, financial contributions will be welcome; but for those with more time than money I'm also sure that there will be a need for lots of phone calls and door knocking.

It will be a powerful affirmation of all we believe in here at Blue Jersey when we give Tom Kean Junior a truly serious "run for his money" by replacing him with a solid progressive like Gina Genovese.

Then, guess what folks?  We can expect the same kinds of help/involvement from south to north when it comes time to remove the stain of Scott Garrett from the 5th District in 2008!!!

We already have the power to transform NJ politics into the cleanest and most progressive in the nation, we just have to believe we have it, and use it!

Gina Genovese for Senate! (4.00 / 1)
I would like to add my voice to the chorus that is growing louder and louder for Gina.  She represents the best of politics and offers the residents of New Jersey, particularly those who live in Kean Jr.'s district, an opportunity for meaningful reform and a government that truly represents our citizens.  She has my strong support and the New Providence Democratic Committee looks forward to supporting her in the months ahead.

Essex for Genovese (4.00 / 1)
I'm so proud of Gina, who has grown from a staunch Dean for America supporter to become a major political force in her own right. I can't wait to get behind her campaign. Congratulations, Gina!

@ last wednesdays Essex DFA meeting we talked about (0.00 / 0)
your candidacy. Those who didn't know about this race remarked "oh really !!!"  when told you declared against Tom Kean Jr. There were a lot of smiles in the room.

Good luck in taking the fight to Tom Kean Jr., He deserves the best, LOL.

NJ Stonewall Democrats Strongly Endorses Gina (0.00 / 0)
Gina, it gives me particular satisfaction and pride that you've formally "thrown your hat in the ring" and to read the well deserved comments and statements of support from the folks in the progressive community.

For the last six months, your name has been raised as a candidate for the legislature, but to challenge for the Senate seat was initially a surprise. The fact that you represent the Democratic Party at its best, the American Dream, and face a child of privilege who has only exhibited a flawed and uninspired character, gives us all a special incentive to support you!

We'll be there and are already encouraging others across the country to give support.

Thanks for the support (4.00 / 1)
Every day more current and prior students and clients are calling and emailing about my run for NJ Senate.  I am building a group of H.S. students that want to learn about campaigning and get involved.  I am excited about the ground swell for my run and welcome the feet and donations to make the campaign a success.  If you would like to participate, send me an email at GinaforNJSenate@att.net  Thank you for your wonderful encouragement and support.
