What Kind of Democrats Suck Up To Chris Christie?

by: Juan Melli

Thu Mar 08, 2007 at 03:23:19 PM EST

During last year's Senate race, New Jersey learned exactly what kind of partisan hack George W. Bush appointed to be our US Attorney. Just days ago, Huntsu gave us an outstanding bio of Christie and his partisan use of the US Attorney's office during the race.

Chris Christie is a former Republican Freeholder from Morris County who had the honor to be a Bush "Pioneer" in the 2000 election.  Pioneers are people who raised $100,000 or more for Bush Cheney 2000.  After Bush took office in 2000, Christie was appointed US Attorney for New Jersey.  Christie was also widely rumored to be a leading Republican candidate for Frank Lautenberg's Senate seat, and is the leading Republican to take on Jon Corzine for Governor in 2009.  In short, he has been a powerful and long-time partisan Republican, and has aspirations to enter politics again as a Republican some day in the future.

Today, in a press release that attempts to draw Senator Loretta Weinberg into a "scandal" that the BCDO is trying to claim involves her, presumed BCDO-backed Assembly candidate Ken Zisa has nothing but kind words for proven Republican partisan Christie.

"Where there's subpoenas, there's fire," Zisa said. "Mr. Christie is known for treading carefully and deliberately. After months of denials, Weinberg, Johnson and Huttle will now have to contend with a full throttle federal probe of their most full throated supporter."

What is Ken Zisa, Hackensack's Chief of Police, doing wiping his feet on the entire idea of presumption of guilt? "Where there's subpoenas, there's fire?" You mean, 'guilty until proven innocent?' I thought it was the other way around in America.

And since when has Christie been "known for treading carefully and deliberately?" Didn't that myth get blown out of the water last fall when he abused his power to turn the US Attorney's office into an arm of the Kean Jr campaign?  Again, back to Huntsu.

In September, Christie issued a subpoena on a non-profit regarding their rental of a building from Democratic Senator Bob Menendez as he was in a rough campaign with Tom Kean Jr.  The subpoena came in what appeared concert with the Kean Jr. campaign's post-Labor Day putsch on corruption issues, and knocked Menendez off message for weeks.

The subpoena was not issued quietly, either.

"The big issue of the subpoena is that, while ordinarily they are kept confidential, it was quickly known by everybody that this was issued," said Rick Thigpen, a Democratic strategist. "You would certainly wonder was there anything so significantly pressing that it couldn't wait till after the election."

In fact, there was a lot of press regarding the subpoena - including comments from Christie - before the election and then a seeming silence since then.  This could be simply a loss of interest after an election, but there has also been no move on Menendez.  There was a very public subpoena and then it quieted down.

I'm not sure which is worse - Ken Zisa's glowing comments about partisan hack Chris Christie coming from a Democrat, or his comments about the presumption of guilt coming from someone in law enforcement.

Zisa is Losing It.... (0.00 / 0)
From an article entitled, " U.S. attorney opens probe into health chief's resignation"

http://www.northjers...

It was not clear who is the target of the federal inquiry. Michael Drewniak, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, declined to comment. Subpoenas are issued through grand jury proceedings, which are confidential.

Jenkins said she received the subpoena on Monday but didn't know whom it targets.

Cherry did not return a phone call. Her attorney, Charles Sciarra, said federal authorities are most likely investigating the board's expenditure on the disciplinary hearings. He said the subpoena requests documents generated from January 2001 to present -- which includes the period after Cherry's departure.

"They are obviously interested in what happened over the last several months, when the board was conducting a circus of a hearing," Sciarra said.

He and Cherry requested the U.S. Attorney's Office get involved as early as last summer, he said.

"We are elated about the subpoena," he said. "It's long overdue."

Mayor Michael Wildes was not as straightforward in saying who is the likely target of the inquiry.

"In my opinion, it's anyone who misused the public trust and monies for personal and political purposes, including Ms. Cherry," he said.

A far cry from Zisa'a outrageously self serving pre-judicial BS, eh?  It's irresponsible for a police chief to spew such nonsense.

Since he brought it up; I'm willing to bet that the "target" here is Wildes and not Cherry.  Any takers?  ;-)

From todays Bergen Record Editorial

http://www.northjers...

The primary for legislative elections is still three months away. In Bergen County, the mudslinging has already begun.

Is it possible that Christie is functioning as a Republican operative?  We'll know that that's the case if he skips over the "beams" in Mayor Wildes eye and focuses on the "motes" that may exist in something that Violet Cherry may have done.

The best hope for Republican success in NJ is to discredit/destroy the progressive good government movement and keep the status quo going.

A few weeks ago it would be "over the top" to imply that US Attorney's were being fired for being upholding the law...now we know better.

This is all getting "curioser and curioser"...

In fairness, Christie is pretty respected. (0.00 / 0)
Last year, he was New Jersey Law Journal's lawyer of the year, specifically focused on his record on corruption and consumer fraud.  He nailed Treffinger when Treffinger was the nominee-apparent against Torricelli, and took down Janiszewski and Lynch, in addition to taking down a bunch of Monmouth County Republicans.  Quite frankly, I don't agree that Christie still having a job is proof of his political hackery.

Shadow Boxing With Straw Men... (0.00 / 0)
as usual.  LOL

If Cristie comes down on Cherry for some trumped up garbage and let's Wildes skate...he'll have proven he's a hack.  I think it's highly unlikely...but that's what I said...and just said again.

If that rubs you the wrong way; please rsvp in a direct forthright aboveboard  manner.  Thank you.

Straw men? (0.00 / 0)
In the link Juan provided, it was suggested that Christie is a political hack because he still has his job at US Attorney.  I disagree with that assessment, and am suggesting why reasonable people might respect Christie.  I purposely didn't make any assessment of whether or not Christie's subpeonas have merit, because I don't know.  Where are the straw men I'm fighting with here?

Which Link? And Which "Suggestion? (0.00 / 0)
Here's one link Juan made: http://www.bluejerse...

And here's what the diarist said...

Again, this is all conjecture, and the fact that Christie was not forced out in no way suggests that he got or acceded to political pressure.

I'm the one who said that any Christie investigation of Englewood politics that came down on Violet Cherry while ignoring Mayor Wilde would be fishy.  I still think thats true.

I also believe that, if Christie were doing the partisan bidding of the Republicans who appointed him; he would be doing his best to preserve the status quo in terms of machine politics as it gives Republican the ethics issue.

This will all play out in time and we shall see what happens.  I do know that I would LOVE to see Christie coming down hard on ALL corruption across the board...wouldn't we all?

This will all play out in time.

What about all the letters written to Christie asking him to (0.00 / 0)
investigate the South Orange Town government? Essentialy criminal referals.

Oh wait ...... the SO Village president is a Republican.

But sucopsucoh is right, Christie has not been outwardly a tool of the Bush Administration and thusly deserves respect.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

Curiouser is right.... (4.00 / 1)
Ferriero-crats have been known to conspire with Republicans from time to time when it suits their purposes.  And their purpose here may just be to make Senator Weinberg look bad simply in time for the Primary.

But they should beware, since a subpoena is simply a request for info and the fact that Violet Cherry wanted the investigation means that this could result in her favor, and it could also mean that the Republicans in NJ want to bring Ferriero down too.

Gee, wonder how the investigation into the FORGERY for Charles "Ken" Zisa's special election is going.  We KNOW there was a CRIMINAL act there, we're practically staring into a blazing inferno on that one.  Who needs smoke?

Oh how we forget so quickly... (0.00 / 0)
That Gordon Johnson himself is involved in a forgery case in Bergenfield.

Is that one initated by you guys? n/t (0.00 / 0)

Please explain yourself. (0.00 / 0)
What the heck are you talking about?  There seems to be a lot of forgeries going on in Bergenfield - a Ferriero town.  If you are going to imply that Gordon Johnson is guilty of forgery - you better have more to back that up than a tiny little hit piece comment instead of your usual bloviating press releases.

I grew up in Bergenfield, but I don't trust ANYTHING that originates there at this point, especially since Clancy is still around.  Ferriero-crats tried to implicate Loretta Weinberg in last week's Violet Cherry insinuations and the Record called them on it.  Is this the way it's gonna be until June?

There is actual PROOF that Ferriero supporters used forgery to try to change the outcome of an election.  Your smear comment about Gordon Johnson is hardly substantial.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
