The Englewood Report

I urge anyone here dismayed (or mad as hell) at the current state of the Bergen County Democratic Committee to bookmark this page

http://www.theenglew...

Especially see the story "Who is Joe Ferriero?"

It may have been Howard Dean who inspired me to get involved in Presidential Primary politics.  But it was what has been happening in Englewood over the past few years that compelled me to become more involved in local politics.

While I was rounding up volunteers to walk Tenafly for John Kerry, and the BCDO had given us flyers to hand out for the County positions, I ran into a problem I just never saw coming.

Several volunteers I had called who lived in Englewood asked me if the literature we would be handing out contained information on the County Candidates.  I said yes and they politely declined to help us.  When I asked why, I was informed of how in Englewood, many CC members were gotten rid of by Ferriero by trying that now familiar "put your CC enemies on line 4" trick, that would be used on me not 2 years later.

There were other folks from Leonia that had such a terrible opinion of Ferriero from a Pay-To-Play aspect as well.  The more I heard about these tactics, the more I learned about Joe Ferriero.

Being a Howard Dean fan who would ask EVERYONE for their votes, I was extremely disturbed that tactics used by the head of our Bergen County Democratic organization had actually caused upstanding Democrats to leave the Party.

When we LOSE people from the party due to ethics - that is NOT a good sign.  I took that sign in consideration when I was asked to support Loretta Weinberg and Valerie Huttle for the Senate and Assembly in 2005.  Based on how Ferriero's tactics had damaged the Democratic Party in Englewood, I wholeheartedly supported Weinberg and Huttle in their special elections.

Now in the middle of the room during two actual BCDO special elections, when I saw how Senator Weinberg and Assemblywoman Huttle were treated by the BCDO, and how I was treated for simply voting for them, I knew I had picked the right course and had backed the right team.  When I then saw Senator Weinberg and team go on to garner 75% of the votes in the general election, I knew I had backed the choice of the voters in the 37th district - including Republicans and Independents.

When I then saw how UNHAPPY Ferriero was that we had done the will of the voters in the 37th district, I knew then that Joe just had to go.  If he was not there to elect popular Democrats to office in a general election, what was he there for?

There were only several answers to that question and none of them good.

There are some folks here that will back up Ferriero right or wrong because he is the head of the Democratic Party here in Bergen County. However, I believe THAT view is shortsighted when it disregards the future effects of the attrition ALREADY BEGUN on the Democratic party in Bergen County.

It is my party, my responsibility to the voters of my district to make sure the Democratic party here is not run like a Sopranos episode.  As an Italian American myself, (I love a good cannoli probably more than he does) I am still very sensitive to that stereotype and offended by the way Ferriero runs the BCDO.

Just because the Mob is ORGANIZED and good at keeping their boys in-line doesn't make them choir boys.  The same can be said for the BCDO.

It is precisely Ferriero's antics in Englewood that display vividly exactly what is wrong with Bergen County politics.  I urge you all to read and bookmark the Englewood Report.  It couldn't be more timely.

A Nifty Journal... (0.00 / 0)
...we need new and varied media to reach many many more people outside these narrow communities of political junkies.  Thanks for sharing it Carol!

There really needs to be a Bergen County equivalent that actually does put out a print edition along with the web content.  Even people who don't own computers generally own CD/DVD players; why not have a CD included with each issue that could provide audio/video (SVCD) to the print buyers?

Hell, I bet the thing could even be done at a profit with the right content.

There's a need for something with a progressive political slant to counter the existing establishmentarian media.

The "Record" while occasionally excellent; isn't doing anywhere near as thorough a job of investigative journalism as needs to be done in Bergen County.

Anybody out there wanna discuss this further in private?  Feel free to drop me a line at unboughtandunbossed@gmail.com

Print Edition (0.00 / 0)
Actually, we DO have a print edition.  The first wave of mailings went out to 2500 households this past week and feedback has been very positive.

While we have full confidence in the power of the internet to help educate citizens, some Englewoodians don't use the internet regularly and others don't even have access.  It is important that these citizens don't get left behind.

I like your CD/DVD concept.  I will look into that further.

Also, Consider Going Countywide.... (0.00 / 0)
It's a matter of distribution, demographics and capital.....oh, I left out chutzpah!!!

A genuinely progressive, hip, sharp, entertaining and somewhat edgy weekly would sell well in Bergen County and probably regionally....if done with quality/integrity.

Such a publication could be a focal point for upsetting the culture of corruption that permeates governance throughout the whole region.....and I still dare say it can be done at a profit.

Go for it!!!  :-)

Who are the Democratic (0.00 / 0)
County Committee members? Is there a list of them somewhere? I consider myself politically aware, and I have no clue. I'd imagine there is a huge number of Bergen County Dems that are in the same boat. (Seems to me that retaining power would be pretty easy if the only people who know what's going on are the ones who supprt you.) Efforts like yours seem like the only way to enact meaningful change.

Nice website, by the way. Love the look.

Interesting question (0.00 / 0)
But do any county parties make lists of their committee members public?  And should they?  I'm not sure about either of those answers...

Yes and Yes (0.00 / 0)
We have our county committee reps list online for the Tenafly Municipal Democratic Committee.  These are elected party officials.  That information should be available to the public.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

I love simple answers (0.00 / 0)
That's cool that the Tenafly Dems make it all readily available.  (And nice work with the site, Carol.)  But my question is still is whether or not this is the norm, whether it should be done by the municipalies or the counties, should it all be aggregated into one place, etc.  It strikes me that there ought to be some sort of standard for parties to follow so that folks know where to find it all.  Open government and whatnot.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
I think it should be standard that County Committees make that info available on-line.  However, in Bergen, Ferrieo-crats like anonymity.  That is how our incumbents faced a challenge.  A few people chosen by Ferriero to run against our incumbent CC members in Tenafly were told that THERE WERE NO CC MEMBERS IN THAT DISTRICT and that is why they were asked to run.  Our Councilman Pat Rouse almost lost his seat to a tie with such a person.  Now that we have that info on the record for everyone to see, Ferriero's goons can't lie like that again.

The problem is, many Bergen municipal chairs have county jobs, are beholden to Ferriero and may wish to keep that info in the dark.  We have to turn on the lights.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Yes and yes - county edition (0.00 / 0)
The Ocean County Clerk's website lists the entire county committee for both parties, by district, including vacancies. Why shouldn't they?

[ Parent ]
Nice (0.00 / 0)
Very cool that all of this is in one place for both parties by the county government.  The vacancy listings are especially valuable.  This seems to me like a model for others to follow.

info availability & the state: Middlesex Dems list county comm. at mcdonj.com (0.00 / 0)
I meant to reply earlier. A mostly up-to-date list of county committee people is on the mcdo website (with a new staffer working on updating now).

I found it interesting last year to compare the 21 county's Dem websites.  I was trying to answer the simple question of how many of the 21 Dem county chairs were women (I'm not sure I'm updated on the answer now, which is 2 or 3). The county websites vary wildly in what info you can glean.  Some county chairs are on the front page with a long letter saying who they are etc. and others are squirreled away in some back corner or not to be found at all.  I'd love to see basic info including committee people, chair, vice chair, municipal chairs, vice chairs listed in every county.  I've been told that's too much to ask since every county wants to go its own way.

That is a great and simple way... (0.00 / 0)
For people to reach out to the committee members and get more involved.

I like it.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.
