More on The US Attorneys Story

by: huntsu

Fri Mar 02, 2007 at 08:11:12 AM EST

I'm doing this as a new diary simply because the previous one about US Attorney Chris Christie is so long that this update would get lost in the mass.

That diary raised questions about whether Christie had received or acceded to political pressure to investigate Democrats during last fall's elections.  As many as US Attorneys have been fired or pressured to do so in the past few months, and some of them say it was because they refused to use their office politically to benefit the Republican Party.

Now Talking Points memo reports that the House Judiciary Committee sentsubpoenas the fired US Attorneys, and a lot more information may come out.

Remember Bud Cummins. He was the US Attorney from the Eastern District of Arkansas who got canned so Karl Rove's opposition research chief could take over the job. Look closely at what he just told the Associated Press ...

Cummins, U.S. attorney for Arkansas' Eastern District from 2001-2006, said Thursday that he and other fired attorneys had "politely declined" previous requests from the committee. He said he "didn't have any desire to stir up the controversy any further."

"If given the choice, I'd elect to stay home and mind my own business," Cummins told The Associated Press. "Now that I'm under subpoena, I'll go and give cooperative, truthful answers."

When asked if officials in the Justice Department or White House had asked him to decline the earlier requests, Cummins said he had no comment.

Again, one of those 'no comments' that says plenty.

This story may be getting bigger.  Again, we do not know how many US Attorneys got pressure to insert themselves into the political process in close elections, but we do know Chris Christie did insert himself in the Menendez/Kean Jr. campaign at a sensitive time.  We also know he has continued to issue subpoenas whenever NJ Democrats are making good news for themselves.

The House Judiciary Committee should not only subpoena the fired US Attorneys, but also ones who have not been fired.  They should start with ones who publicly investigated Democrats between Labor Day and the November election last fall.

Unfortunately, there is no one from the NJ House Delegation on the House Judiciary Committee for us to call.

Some enterprising reporter should also ask US Attorney for the State of New Jersey Chris Christie if he received any such political pressure.  Christie has previously denied it, but with mounting evidence that others have been pressured the subject should be raised again.

Excellent Idea (0.00 / 0)
Calling on current US Attorneys to testify is an excellent idea. Of course, they probably won't be all that free to speak about what's really going on, citing confidentiality and all that.

But it will help to shed some light on the increasing corrupting politicization of the Dept of Justice.

Oh boyee. (0.00 / 0)
The hearings on this promise to be some of the best entertainment around. David Iglesias is especially looking forward to having a full-on spleen dump. Of course, they might get to him first and buy or threaten him off. He has expressed concerns along those lines.

That said, it sure looks like it's gonna be popcorn popping weather, once the hearings start.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Good work, again (4.00 / 1)
For me, Huntsu's work on this matter rank right up there with Juan catching Jill Hazelbacker during Blue Jersey's astroturf mini-scandal and XPatriated Texan's finding of a 1996 newspaper article that puts Menendez's rental deal already in the public record as of 1996. Though we have no smoking gun on Christie, the circumstantial evidence is indeed incendiary. Keep in mind that the aforementioned article (Bergen Record or something similar) that XPatriated Texan found shows that folks knew about Menendez's rental ten years ago, yet Christie, who has been confirmed in the state in 2001, saw fit to issue a subpoena two months before a major election.  Connect this with what happened in New Mexico with Iglesias and what may have happened in Arkansas, and there seems to be something to the theory.  Again, though, we have no smoking gun on Christie, so we should proceed cautiously and at the same time encourage a roving reporter to give Christie some tough questions; better yet, have the Senate Judiciary Committee call him up, as another comment suggested.  Subpoenas apparently do take time to sort out into a decision, from what I gather.

The Larger Problem in NJ is Where is the STATE AG? (0.00 / 0)

It doesn't surprise me that the Bush creatures would try to pressure their appointees for partisan gain.  Yes, it's illegal...but so what; this administration is thoroughly corrupt and anyone who is well informed knows it.  Bush/Cheney deserve to be impeached, removed from office, indicted, convicted and jailed.

As far as I'm concerned our own STATE AG's office should be given another 100 MILLION bucks to apply a fine toothed comb to every...and I do mean EVERY NJ elected official.

The details of how pay to play (the legal kind and the blatant bribery kind have influenced policy/procedure/legislation/expenditure/contracts/eminent domain/etc.

I bet that a pattern would emerge that would allow for the RICO statutes to be unleashed.

There is just so so so much unethical/illegal crap going on in NJ governance IN BOTH PARTIES that it is truly disgusting!

Meanwhile, I suppose we can continue to celebrate the fact that our AG is not Zulima Farber; that's Stuart Rabner's major (compared to what really needs to be done) "claim to fame"....so far.

I don't know if the extra 100 mil would make any difference if there were no will on Rabner's part to clean up the crap...but that's another question.

The view from New Mexico (0.00 / 0)
Check out this quote from Talking Points Memo:

New Mexico Republican bigwig on Rep. Heather Wilson (R), the member of Congress at the center of the canned US attorneys scandal. From the Alburquerque Tribune ...

"If I was Heather Wilson, I'd be thinking about taking a long trip to Baghdad, where the conditions are a little more subdued," said former Gov. Dave Cargo.

Cargo, a Republican, was only half-joking.
