Wintery Mix Monday News Roundup

  • More budget blowback as the state's workers are pressured from both sides and Gov. Corzine promises a "hot" debate on hospital funding.  If Corzine is able to make lemondade from all these budget lemons, he'll surely make a national name for himself.

  • The Israel/Palestine debate rages on in the Mid-east and also in Teaneck.  Maybe both sides should go watch the Oscar winning shortfilm Westbank Story?

  • New Jersey Grassroots activists are working to save the planet in the absense of a federal environmental policy.

  • Congress is getting more diverse all the time and the rise of Hispanic/Latino muscle on The Hill is especially promising.  Our own Senator Bob Menendez' leadership roll is at the center of this newfound clout, according to the Ocean County Observer.

  • Should active duty soldiers serving abroad have to pay state income taxes?  This bill would end taxation of GI's serving overseas.  Also read this and decide for yourself!

  • A smokefree Atlantic City?  Could happen soon enough.  (hack, weeze)

  • More Oscar bits and pieces:  Cherry Hill native wins big for producing An Inconvenient Truth.  Or couse Vice President Gore was a big winner too.  What do you think Barack and Hillary are thinking?

    And finally....

  • A commentary from the pInky muses about making George Norcross the Chief Operating officer on Camden County.

Did I miss anything?  This is an open thread so fire away!

Barack and Hillary are thinking... (0.00 / 0)
That they have a Sword of Damocles hanging over their heads, until he finally convinces people he is not running.

Which may not be his intention, whatsoever.

Look at it this way: If he does run, the potential tickets of him and whomever, if he gets the nom, are fascinating. And if he does run, the chances of him getting the nom are very good indeed. He'll be incredibly tough to run against, for anyone.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

probably not popular view, but (0.00 / 0)
The soldiers will get their tax moneys worth when they return and go to state-supported college.  I have the feeling they'll want to still be considered residents then.  They don't have to pay if they're in a combat zone.  Also, I don't think anyone stationed in New Jersey who is a resident of another state pays our taxes.  If you are a civilian U.S. citizen the federal govt taxes you even if you live in another country the entire year.  Virtually every argument mentioned by the father or the politician is  misleading.

Everyone with income should pay taxes, because once you set one priviledged class others want to be included too.  I've heard of serious proposals to exclude teachers from taxes.  Why not? We all admire soldiers...  teachers...  police...  firemen... workers at non-profits...  small businessmen...  ministers...  politicians... the poor...  the hard-working...  Where does it end?

The problem is that their pay is pathetic so New Jersey has to bail out the Federal Govt's cheapness.  That's why the guy's tax is less than 2% of his income, New Jersey is already progressive.  I imagine the bill will pass.  But to give up what is actually an important principle to save less than 2% of income is a mistake.

Ahem, thats President GORE, he won by 500k votes in 2000, RIGHT (0.00 / 0)
    >/snark<

Or course Vice President Gore was a big winner too.  What do you think Barack and Hillary are thinking?

IMHO Gore has been running since a year ago. I think he will announce later this year, maybe september. I think Gore will run away with the nomination. Probably straight to the White House.

TAXES. I don't think contractors who earn their money outside of the USA are taxed when they come back home,,in the US as it is. Why would soldiers be taxed? Thats just rude.

    Taxes (0.00 / 0)
American citizens who make money abroad must declare those earnings and pay taxes when they return to the U.S.  I just got back a week ago from Italy and that fact was made abundantly clear on the Customs form.
