The Englewood Report Is Back

by: The Englewood Report

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 12:39:58 AM EST

My name is Robert Stern.  Some of you may remember my previous posts on my independent candidacy for mayor of Englewood.  Today, I am writing in a very different capacity, as co-editor of the newly resurrected Englewood Report.
The Englewood Report :: The Englewood Report Is Back
Between 1995 and 1998, the original Englewood Report was printed monthly and distributed to interested readers throughout Englewood.  In four years 43 issues were written and produced primarily by Norman Davis, an Englewood activist and former City Council President.  The subject matter included local news and opinion about a variety of municipal and school issues.

Eventually, The Englewood Report closed its door.  Yet, as the French humorist Alphonse Karr once said, "the more things change the more they remain the same."  Nearly a decade later, Norman and I have decided to bring The Report back, with the very same mission as before.  And what mission is that?

Quoting from the Report's last edition on December 1998:

With this issue The Englewood Report winds up its fourth year of publication.  Our stated mission was and remains "to inform Englewood citizens about matters of concern which may not appear in the commercial press and to stimulate public interest in these matters"...

Local government (or any government for that matter), in the absence of adequate public attention, can too easily fall into the hands of persons with private agendas which may not coincide with the public interest.  Private agendas may include the accumulation of political power, ambition for higher office, personal vendettas, or simply ego gratification, not to speak of monetary gain.  It helps to make the right choices on Election Day, but even if we do, open and accountable government doesn't just happen.  It requires effective communication between us and our elected and appointed representatives.  Our officials are more likely to represent the public interest as opposed to any private agendas if citizens demand public input and full justification for important actions.

This final editorial remains prescient today.  If anything, overdevelopment within residential areas has accelerated within Englewood and throughout Bergen County.  Personal vendettas, such as the proceedings against former Health Director Violet Cherry, have cost Englewood taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Party Bossism, Big Money and Pay-to-Play have become top issues in local and statewide elections.  With the relationship between politicians and Big Money becoming ever the more entwined, it will take the participation of private citizens to effectively enact reform.

After all, informed citizens are the foundation of good government.  I encourage you to visit TheEnglewoodReport.com to find out more about the local issues concerning Englewood and Bergen County.  Likewise, we will encourage our readers to visit Blue Jersey, which has become a powerful progressive voice in New Jersey politics.  As Benjamin Franklin once said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

a must for everyone... (4.00 / 2)
Case and point. Thursday night, I sat at the Englewood planning board meeting until 1:36a.m.!
I still don't know the entirety of the history behind the development project by route 4, nor do I understand the financial impact entirely. Someone could better explain how Joe Ferriero and Michael Wildes (to be fair, along with others) brought this deal about.I do want to highlight two comments made by two members of the planning board. The first was by Mayor Michael Wildes. At one point he noted that it was indeed 1:30 in the morning and that 30,000 residents were asleep. A few minutes later another council member said that this particular development project was of a magnitude unlike any the city had ever seen. So let me do the math for you. Everyone is asleep while the Mayor's board passes a resolution for the benefit of developers while squeezing (I want to use another word, but I already got in trouble for that) the citizens of Englewood. I'm trying to be civil here. This is what we call open and transparent government in the city of Englewood.
At the end of the meeting an outraged resident furiously ran up to Mayor Wildes to remind him that this was exactly the reason why he didn't vote for him in the last election.
Bob: this is why I voted for you. Thank you.

Many Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Of course, this is why we're involved.  With enough participation, we can change one news headline...

Residents sleep as Planning Board gives mega-taxbreak to mega-developers.

...to another...

Residents win as Planning Board sides with taxpayers.

Excellent Work!!! (0.00 / 0)
I'm pleased to see that you're in for the long haul.

I'm confident that Englewood will change for the better and that your current mayor will find himself on the short end (that's the Ferriero end) of political history...perhaps a lot sooner than some folks may think.

Hang in there Bob!!!

We have some compelling stories in the works, including the latest developments in megadeveloper HKT's half-billion dollar project south of Rt. 4.  Stay tuned!
