My View of the Presidential Candidates. Part IV: John Edwards

by: Hopeful

Sun Feb 04, 2007 at 01:21:20 AM EST

I'll just say up front that John Edwards's speech blew me away.  His supporters were in an organized block in back.  All had white tee shirts over their regular clothes with the logo one corps.  As one of the volunteers explained to me, they are not just campaigning but volunteering to fight poverty.

His intro music was "This is our Country."  There was a lot of applause welcoming him.  He opened by acknowledging the loss of Molly Ivins.

Then he began his speech.  He said that somewhere in America, a little girl is hungry.  He spoke of union picket lines.  Then, a young man who has been accepted to college, but puts the letter aside because he cannot afford it.  It doesn't have to be that way.  A mother hearing that her precious son who volunteered after September 11th is dead.  Refugee camps half a world away,  where a little boy tries to protect his even younger sister, now that their parents have been murdered.  It was astoundingly moving, I was ready to cry.  Some where in America there's a working dad who has to beg at the emergency room for treatment for his sick daughter.  Will you stand up?  The crowd roared and stood.  It was amazing.  I wrote Wow! multiple times in my notes.

Hopeful :: My View of the Presidential Candidates. Part IV: John Edwards
Edwards continued by turning to the war.  He recalled Dr. King's speech about Vietnam.  It is a betrayal if you do not speak out.

It's not right for our silence to enable Bush to escalate this war.  Silence is betrayal.

A Non-binding resolution is not enough.  We have the power.

George Bush is counting on us not to stand up.  Silence is betrayal.  Bush, Cheney, Rove don't think we're up to it.

Well, he sure hit the nail on the head when it comes to how I -- and I think much of 'base' -- feel about the war.  Remember Dodd also condemned the non-binding resolution, saying we already know that Bush will ignore it, and Obama has presented a bill to withdraw by March of 2008. The Republicans really do think our party is weak and won't stand up -- remember that they said the same thing when they readied their negative ad blitz against Menendez and our other Democratic candidates.  Contrast Edwards with Hillary's speech, which I'll cover in my next diary.  She says the resolution will 'Send a message.'

Then Edwards turned to poverty.  One in five in America are in poverty.  He said that the problem is complex -- he's not promising simple solutions.  He used the word "politics" as an indictment of weakness.  Frankly, I took it all as a shot at the Clintons and other triangulators.

Silence on health is betrayal.  47 million don't have isurance.  The Democratic party should quit talking 'access to healthcare:  We stand now and forever for universal health care.

The Edwards crowd now raised signs with the slogan "TOMORROW BEGINS TODAY"  It was pretty well coordinated.

We are a party of action.  Not appeasement

He then invoked unions.  I am proud to stand with them.  Again the crowd went wild.  I've read he had a lot of union backing, now I see why.

The last two lines I wrote:

It is time to be patriotic about something other than the war.

We need to reclaim the Democratic party

In summary, I found it to be a great speech. The energy in the crowd was amazing. If you're looking for someone who is proud to be a Democrat and will advocate progressive policies, Edwards is making a strong pitch for you.  He also had the best organized campaign presence after Hillary Clinton.

Recommended, not promoted (0.00 / 0)
I would have promoted this to the front page, but it really isn't about NJ specifically.  So I recommended instead.

an equally good write-up (0.00 / 0)
All of us appreciate the time you took to attend the DNC meeting and blog about the candidates. The way that you felt upon hearing Edwards is the way I've felt about him for a long time: He is a gifted orator who speaks with candor and works best when he is incorporating an inspiring, personal narrative. What I like about Edwards in 2007 is his strident, concerted anti-war message, which is nicely counterbalanced with his reemphasis on domestic issues, including poverty and universal health care. I watched him yesterday from a talk at Dartmouth on C-SPAN and on Meet the Press -- he is on message and as focused as I have ever seen him.  I put him on equal footing with Obama and Hillary for getting the nomination if he keeps this up.

thank you (0.00 / 0)
I still have not written about Hillary Clinton, who is very impressive in her own way.

Yup....maybe a Clinton/Edwards Ticket is in the offing... (0.00 / 0)
...could Hillary ever play second fiddle?

We already know that Edwards doesn't run well as a VP candidate...he let Kerry get chewed up badly......he should have done whatever it took to have demplished the ugly vicious unfounded lies that swiftboated Kerry out of the White House!

She would be ideally suited to ward off the attack dogs that the Rovian Republicans will unleash!!!

Of course, this is still way to early to settle on a ticket, eh?  ;-)

You Can See/Hear it at the c-span.org Site (0.00 / 0)
It was a great speech.  I want to see Edwards specific proposals; but there's no doubt he gave the strongest and most passionate speech of the day.

I want to see the specific legislative proposals top back up the emotion.

If this guy can provide the "beef" to match the rhetoric; he'll do well.

He also went 20 minutes long......way more than the 7 allotted ...yet Howard Dean wasn't about to interrupt him!  LOL

Great job of writing it up Hopeful...but I still urge y'all to go to http://www.c-span.or... and check it all out for yourselves.  (You can fast forward in the stand alone version of real player if need be.)

they're also at democrats.org (0.00 / 0)
I intend to watch the Sunday speeches to see the other candidates.
