My view of the Presidential Speeches. Part V: Dennis Kucinich

by: Hopeful

Sat Feb 03, 2007 at 08:22:05 PM EST

Having seen him run in 2004, no doubt you all already have your opinions of Representative Dennis Kuninich.  As I recall, he was actually still on the ballot in June when we voted.  I would say that the audience showed little interest in his speech, with many people wandering off and some have their own conversations in the aisles, to the point that I would call it disrespectful.  He noted it too, calling out:  "Can you hear me in the back?  [pause] Cause I can hear you!"
Hopeful :: My view of the Presidential Speeches. Part V: Dennis Kucinich
Obviously no one regards him as a viable candidate, though I feel obliged to remark thtt this marginalized representative of the left has been shown to be right about the Iraq war.  The initial part of the speech was struck me as weird, almost creepy, since he kept referring to what he would do when he is President.  That came off as delusional rather than the usual political rallying call.  One point is that he "will" establish a Department of Peace.

Then he went on to a long description of his visit to Lebanon and the devastation there caused by the recent Israeli war with Hezbollah.  He opposed this war too, while observing that the Bush administration encouraged Israel's attack.  He saw  many bombed civilian targets.  He movingly spoke of the visit to a village where a bomb had killed many families.  He said that the people gathered around when they heard a U.S. Congressman was present, and that the people told them that they loved America, they just disagreed with our government's policies.  He displayed a fragment of this bomb at his booth:

ps.  I have described Kucinich's speech as I perceived it.  I know that at some sites the mention of Israel or Palestine will spark a huge flamewar.  Please let's leave that to national sites, since it is off topic here.  On the other hand, please comment on Rep. Kucinich and the primaries.

Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich (3.00 / 1)
Your report is on the Kucinich speech to the DNC and you asked for comments on Candidate Kucinich and the primaries so I  will comment on both subjects.
You found it weird that he spoke on what he would do as President. Don't you think it's even more weird that the other candidates completely avoid talking about what they would do as President? As usual, Kucinich gives factual information while the others give speeches and tell us to trust them, they will figure it out when they get there. Maybe the reason it seems weird is that most people are not used to hearing actual information in political speeches. They get used to the empty, flowery phrases and information makes them uncomfortable. I'm afraid that's one of Kucinich's problems, he makes people uncomfortable because he speaks truth instead of the usual BS. Consider his positions on Iraq from the very beginning and on any other issue you are interested in. His positions on all issues can be found here: http://kucinich.us/i...
My experience on his candidacies in 2004 and today is that most people agree with his positions on almost all of the issues but do not think he can get elected. Interestingly, his positions today are very close to what they were in 2004 except that the country is worse off today and his solutions are even more important.
The primaries give the voters an opportunity to select a candidate that represents their interests, not the interests of the party establishment. This is why the progressive community should look at the issues and Kucinch's positions and support him in the primaries. As he did in 2004, he will support the candidate selected by the party (unlike that schmuck Lieberman). The stronger Kucinich runs in the primaries, the more likely we are to have a progressive Democratic platform and a candidate who represents the progressive community.
