Jersey Journal: Cunningham Will Challenge Doria

by: JRB

Tue Jan 30, 2007 at 03:59:34 AM EST

According to a Jersey Journal source, Sandra Bolden-Cunningham, the widow of Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, will challenge Senator Joe Doria in June. According to Cunningham insider, Bobby Jackson, the announcement is slated for Thursday.
Jackson said Bolden-Cunningham will be running with former Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone, a Bayonne city councilman.

The candidate for the ticket's other Assembly spot hasn't been chosen, he said.

Qualifications? (0.00 / 0)
Outside of being someones widow does she have any qualifications?

Doria is not a stiff. Even though he is tied in with the " machine" he has acted independently at times. He might not be the best but he is far from the worst!

If Ms. Cunnigham's name was Ms. Smith, would there be any reason to vote for her?

Good Questions (0.00 / 0)
So far, this is a rumor (trial balloon?).  If she actually runs I'm sure she'll tell us why, and what her agenda is and positions are.

Doria is mired in "the machine" up to his eyeballs...maybe he's not totally in "over his head" as you suggest; but wouldn't it be cool if someone who was totally cancer free was in office?

Then again, she may turn out to be just another greedy self serving hack like many if not most of the NJ pols in office...let's wait and see if there's any truth to the rumor.

Correction: This is More Than A "Rumor" (0.00 / 0)
It appears that the "source" is solid and that she's actually supposed to announce the candidacy/slate on Thursday.

I look forward to hearing what it's all about.  Hudson could use some shaking up...as could the whole State, eh?

Will Sweet Lou Roll The Dice? (0.00 / 0)
Lou Manzo was originally elected to his Assembly seat as part of Team Cunningham I that ousted Joe Doria from the State Assembly in 2003.

However, after Joe Doria replaced Glenn Cunningham in the State Senate following Cunningham's death in 2005 and ran for re-election later that year, Manzo was kept on the HCDO line, but Chiappone wasn't.

Will Manzo, one of the most vocal proponents of taking baby steps in the right direction with regards to property tax reform that would raise state income taxes to pay for property tax decreases, play it safe and stick with Doria or roll the dice and rejoin Team Cunningham (if they'll have him).

Considering the fact that Doria has proved his conservative leanings by abstaining on civil unions and co-sponsoring Cardinale's offensive alternative bill and Charles Epps has become the latest in a long line of poster children for Hudson County corruption and graft, both Manzo and Team Cunningham as well as the district as a whole would probably be best served if they reunited.

I don't know if Cunningham, Chiappone, or Manzo are particularly progressive on issues like marriage equality, but it would be wonderful for everyone involved if they were, giving progressives a side in the fight that is worthy of our support going into the June primaries.

"Assemblyman Lou Manzo is definitely running with Doria"
