Alex DeCroce: Studying Stem Cells "Won't Give Us True Research"

by: JRB

Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 01:37:21 PM EST

Minutes ago on NJN, Assembly Minority Leader Alex DeCroce was asked what he thought about Governor Corzine's State of the State address. He replied by attacking Governor Corzine's proposal for state funding of stem cell research, but he went a step further, attacking stem cell research itself. DeCroce said we'll be spending money on something "that won't give us true research."

Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, who was also appearing with DeCroce on NJN, quickly distanced himself from his Assembly counterpart. Lance said that his opposition to the stem cell proposal is "not philosophical."

DeCroce Shot off his Mouth And His Foot at The same Time... (0.00 / 0)
Since it was located in his mouth as he was speaking....

What a jerk.

What exactly does Mr DeCroce know about research? (0.00 / 0)
I would be delighted to listen to Mr DeCroce hold court on stem cells and research, provided there is any reason to believe that he knows anything about them.  What is Mr DeCroce's background?  What does he know about stem cell research?  Has he read this from the NIH:

http://stemcells.nih...

My understanding is that DeCroce's work expeience is as a realtor and a property developer, but maybe he received advanced degrees in biology and medicine when we weren't looking.  If he wants to address the legitimacy of stem cell research, he needs to establish some bona fides.  I suspect he won't provide bona fides, though, because I suspect he doesn't know anything about stem cell research beyond a mistaken assumption about embryonic stem cell research and abortion.  His remarks to the effect that stem cell research "won't give us true research" is not only poorly expressed, but flies in the face of statements by legitimate scientists, including the scientists at the National Institutes of Health, which is one of the world's foremost medical research centers.

I am getting a little tired of these political opportunists who take any and every occasion to promote their ideology regardless of whether they know anything about what they are discussing.  DeCroce seems to be pretending to know something about either stem cells or research.  At the same time, his remark demonstrates ignorance of those subjects.  The folks in District 26 ought to take a close look at who they keep sending to Trenton.  This guy does not represent them well if he represents them with ignorant remarks.  There may be legitimate objections to stem cell research, but if there are, let people who understand those arguments present them.  Fools should stay quiet before they reveal how foolish they are.

Alex DeGroce appears to be one of the few honest politicians. He apparently knows that anything sponsored by a government agency is basically worthless in the long run.

government agencies are "worthless" (0.00 / 0)
It's hard to respond seriously to this comment, but for starters you may want to look at some of the advancements that have come as a result of research advancements related to the space program.

For example:

Cordless power tools, water filtration systems, smoke detectors, digital image processing (used in CATScan's and MRI's), collision avoidance systems for airplanes, satellite technology (TV, cellphones, etc), virtual reality (telesurgery, flight training, etc), heart pump technology, lightweight composite materials, air purification systems, high-bandwidth communications systems, solar power, lighter prosthetic limbs, LEDs used for a type of chemotherapy, lightning protection systems for aircraft, hydroponics, pacemaker, insulin-delivering implant, etc, etc, etc. This list goes on for pages and pages.

These advancements were largely a result of government agencies known as NACA and NASA. If you think those advancements are "worthless", then nothing anyone says can convince you that investing in medical research is wise.
