Rep. Holt Puts the House on Record for Democracy in FL-13

by: JRB

Thu Jan 04, 2007 at 06:09:14 PM EST

Immediately after Nancy Pelosi's swearing-in as Speaker of the House, Representative Rush Holt put the House of Representatives on record that the swearing-in of a Member of Congress does not prejudice the pending inquiry of a contested election in Florida's 13th district.
Holt: Madam Speaker: In light of the facts that partisan and non-partisan lawsuits are underway with regard to Florida's 13th Congressional District and that the votes of 18,000 voters were not recorded on the paperless electronic voting machines in an election decided by 369 votes, may I ask for the record whether a notice of contest has been filed with the Clerk on behalf of Christine Jenningspursuant to law, and what effect, if any, today's proceedings have on pending contests?

Speaker Pelosi: The Chair is advised by the Clerk that a notice of contest pursuant to the statute, section 382 of title 2, United States Code, has been filed with the Clerk. Under section 5 of article I of the Constitution and the statute, the House remains the judge of the elections of its Members. The seating of this Member-elect is entirely without prejudice to the contest over the final right to that seat that is pending under the statute and will be reviewed in the ordinary course in the Committee on House Administration.

Go Rush Holt!!! (0.00 / 0)
He promised to do this at a recent meeting at Rutgers.

I hope that the Congress get's involved in a THOROUGH investigation of that obviously rigged/fixed/screwed up "election" in Florida's 13th.

By shining a bright light on that microcosm the Democrats have a chance to educate Americans as to the threat to democracy that is the Bush/Rove Republican party.

It's not enough that the the election there would be redone; yes that would be great...what I would really love to see is that we truly get to the bottom of what happened and, if it can be proven that criminlaity was involved, that the miscreants be punished to the full extent of the law.  Who knows?  They might even be motivated to squeal on who hired them.

Then again, the "irregularities" could all just be a coincidental combination of accidents and incompetence.

Yeah, right...

Holt commented on his move at our 'Pelosi' party (0.00 / 0)
Congressman Holt was gracious enough to join us via conference call that evening and talked about the situation in FL, as well as what it was like to be in the chamber when the first woman Speaker was sworn in (he predicted the front page photo of the NY Times). We had gathered nearly 50 mostly Middlesex women to watch the highlights of the day.

He said that the 18,000 FL-13 voters had voted for virtually every other office up and down the ballot, but the congressional votes were missing.  It sounds like the only fair thing to do is to hold the election again and looks to be a case of the voting machine companies and whoever certified the vote (a GOP sec'y of state, by any chance?) denying a Dem woman a seat.

The # of women in Congress ... (0.00 / 0)
... is a record 90 in the 110th.

But people shouldn't forget it would've been 91 if those 18,000 got their votes.
