Straightening Out 101.5 (So To Speak)

by: Beckygrrl

Wed Dec 20, 2006 at 01:48:11 PM EST

I almost never listen to New Jersey 101.5, but when a friend called and told me that Dennis Malloy of "Dennis and Judy" was discussing Corzine's signing of the transgender civil rights bill into law yesterday, I couldn't resist tuning in.

After about five minutes of hearing this right-wing boob expound on how "Comrade Corzine" was preventing business owners from freely discriminating against anyone they don't like, being the loudmouth transgender radio host I am, I just couldn't stand it anymore and picked up the phone...

Beckygrrl :: Straightening Out 101.5 (So To Speak)
I was put on the air almost immediately (if anyone was listening, I went by Rebecca on the air). The first question I was asked was my former male name, which I refused to provide (even my own listeners don't get that). He then told me that I'm a transvestite, and I responded that the word "transvestite" is a perjorative term. This exchange went on for a couple of minutes, until he ended the call and said on-air that I was obviously a fake (!) and moved onto the next caller.

Afterward, I emailed him this:

In contrast to your opinion that I'm a fake as you claimed when I called into your show today, I'm not only very much for real, I'm also the #1 transgender radio host in the country. My show and podcast can be found through the links below.

I'd never listened to your show before a friend called me when you got into the topic of the transgender rights bill, but clearly, you really are just as clueless and as out of touch with the reality of life in New Jersey as everyone says you are.

Let me suggest a move to Alabama?I'm sure you'd feel more comfortable with a majority who thinks as you do. As our legislature and Governor have clearly demonstrated, we're better than that here in New Jersey.

Sincerely,

Becky Juro

Y'know folks, we really need to start calling these people out. The problem is, of course, that the more of a public stink we make about idiots like this guy, the more we promote them and increase their listenership. That's exactly how someone as bigoted and ignorant as Dennis Malloy can remain on New Jersey talk radio as long as he has. Frankly, I don't know what the answer is other than to make sure that the majority opposing view is just as accessable and just much a part of the public discussion as the bigot minority is.

If there's anything this experience underscores for me, it's that progressive values need greater promotion in our local media, and it's going to fall to people like us to make that happen. I'd like to suggest that we work to organize a "media blitz" campaign to start getting our message across to more, or at least as many, New Jersey radio listeners as he has.

It's important to remember that real social and political progress in civil rights for racial and ethnic minorities was won only after the battle was won in the media first. In order to ensure that the progressive majority continues to be able to make progress on divisive issues such as same-sex marriage, we must make sure that we're not only speaking to the choir, but also to the average New Jersey soccer Mom and Dad.

How do we get that message across? Thoughts?

You GO, grrl!

Stifling 101.5 outright is probably impossible. The bonehead portion of our fair state's population is alive and kickin'.

I just don't listen, and if someone mentions what they've heard on JerseyJerk 101.5 comes up in conversation, should it be a positive comment, I tell them what think of the station in general regardless of what it is they're sharing -- I wouldn't accept a traffic report fropm them without making my feelings about their the on-air bandinage clear.

I've always thought bumperstickers would be best:

News. Sports. Weather. Stupidity. NJ101.5FM
Time. Traffic. Racism. NJ101.5FM

And so forth.

It would pass any libel test I'm aware of. Both as free speech and as satire.

But keeping them on their toes is good, too, Becky. The idea that you're a fake is hysterical, but exactly what they would have to believe in order to continue to spew hatered. It requires that you not be real to them (as you well know). Thus, the response.

amazin', ain't it?

101.5? Waste of air space (0.00 / 0)
101.5 is just garbage.  It's kind of embarrassing, actually.  I wish the state had a better radio station to represent it.  I've tried to listen to them, but I don't anymore because it really is a waste of time.  All they do is sneer at New Jersey and knock it.  The people who like them regularly must have a bad case of low self-esteem.  Listen to the people who call in some time and see if you don't agree (not Beckygrrl, but the station's regular listeners/callers).  Listening to that station is a nasty, abusive experience.

...once put it all in persective for me:
transgender is between the ears, transexual is between the legs.

this was in respone to a thread i wrote entitled "jay and the transsexuals take over trenton."  you see -- in spite of my intentions -- i was ignorant to the distinction.  i can't hardly blame 101.5 for their stupidity on trans- issues.  they cultivate ignorance over there and without it, their entore rubrick is gone.

I Got Even (Sorta)... (0.00 / 0)
I actually spent about half my latest podcast talking about this and even into it a bit last night on my live show.

The way to effectively publicly discredit someone like Malloy isn't to attack his arguments...anyone can do that and not only doesn't it help our side, it actually helps generate interest in his show. The soft underbelly of any talk show host's credibility is how well they're informed on a given issue and if they have any rational basis for their arguments.

For example, you can disagree with Rush and Hannity all day long, but there's no question they do their homework and at least have a basic understanding of their topics and both sides of the argument before they get behind the mic. I can call Malloy an idiot all I want and it won't have the slightest impact, but showing him as ill-informed, unprepared, and uneducated on his topics can be much more effective because it's a direct attack on his competency as a host and his qualification to be an opinion leader.

One of things I offered on my shows was since this guy is so clueless he can't even tell the difference between a real transsexual and a fake, I have to wonder if this guy even does any prep for the topics he takes on or if he just spouts off without ever actually bothering to learn more than the tiny bit of information included on a press release. By attacking him in this way, I go directly after his credibility and competency as a host, and I allow my listeners to conclude on their own that he's unable to provide accurate information or an informed opinion, that he's ignorant and therefore irrelevant.

The trick is not to show that he's wrong, which will always be arguable, but that he's  an incompetent joke.

The sad fact about guys like Dennis: (0.00 / 0)
He models himself after Rush, Hannity, Beck and Prager. Jerkoffs one and all. To stand out and get attention, he has to be a bigger jerkoff. You have to grudgingly admire that sort of dedication to jerkoffitude.

Eventually, guys like that go all the way to Hal Turner-land: The Pure Land of Being a Jerkoff.

He will. Just watch.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Becky, it's amazing what what "ear sludge" I miss because I don't listen to 101.5! What did you really expect, a little respect from them? You got the scarlet letter "T" emblazoned on you when you announced you were transgender. Those cretins need someone to bully, and when it's their show, they turn off what they don't want to hear. They cannot play in a fair arena!

Becky, remember, you got the last laugh, actually all fairminded people did that day, and henceforth. We got the legislation passed with only eight out of 120 legislators voting against it! 102 NJ legislators voted for it, including the far right Sen. Cardinale! It was all a matter of education and only a few of the far right idealogues voted against it!

These 102 legislators were the folks that counted and they delivered for us! Those borderline neo national socialists who pollute our airwaves can be neutralized, by "us" going out, educating, doing positive things, and ultimately exposing their ignorance and hateful bigotry. The new law gives us that opportunity, and we do plan on seizing that!

Once upon a time, I actually advertised regularly on that station. It'll be a cold day in hell when I consider doing that again.

Becky, don't get mad, get even!
