Corzine's Flawed Plan for Camden

by: Juan Melli

Wed Nov 22, 2006 at 02:52:21 PM EST

Governor Corzine just issued a statement on his plan to revitalize Camden, which begins with asking the legislature to extend the Recovery Act for another five years. He adds:
"As we move forward, the focus of the state's efforts in Camden will be to improve basic governance, including the delivery of essential municipal services, and to foster constructive community engagement. The state also will continue its close involvement with all stakeholders in the vital areas of public safety, public education, and economic and community development."
Sounds like the plan of someone that hasn't been paying much attention. These are all nice ideas, but what will happen to Camden once gay people start to marry? Chaos, death and destruction on a scale we can't imagine. This poorly thought out plan will fail. I'll go so far as to predict that within 5 years, Camden will be one of the least family-friendly places in the country. Mark my words.

It's been well documented (0.00 / 0)
that the people currently in control of these funds have done some questionable things. (off the top of my head, I think they retained Wayne Bryant's firm, which in itself was a conflict because Mr. Bryant was a driving force behind the funding) Does his plan include installation of fresh administration of the funds? Also, I would hope the governor now sees the need for strict oversight and maybe a state comptroller when projects of this magnitude are undertaken (think of the SCC mess). Spending of this type has be accompanied by someone of Mary Jane Cooper's caliber who can guarantee the greatest bang for the buck.

Lastly, shouldn't he make this kind of decision after/during the next budget discussion (already projecting a 2 billion shortfall), why can't this wait 6 months?

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.  I was hoping for either a dramatic decrease in aid to Camden accompanied by a giveback of local control or for the State to takeover everything and go through it with a finetooth comb.  Unfortunately, the story of Camden has been a lot of people feeding at the trough and the attempted destruction of the few stable neighborhoods for "redevelopment."  This is simply prolonging the agony.
