The extraordinary events of election season 2006 -- machine break-downs across our state, the federal consent decree over compliance with HAVA, under- and mis-counts in other states (including a still-disputed Congressional seat in Florida), and continuing debate over "voter-verified" balloting -- leave lingering questions: Are our votes being counted accurately?  What's the best system to make sure they are?  How easily could the new machines be hacked -- and would we know if it happened?  What needs fixing in New Jersey, and what will it take to fix it?

NJDF is honored to welcome a national leader on these issues, Congressman Rush Holt.  Please join us.

New Jersey's Democratic Future is the Garden State's network of rising leaders. It is the organizing hub of a state-wide network of professionals and students supporting federal, state and local candidates who respond to the concerns of our communities.  By applying our collective fundraising, grass-roots and shoe leather capabilities, we help all members of our network rise to the positions and opportunities that will enable us to make ever more of a difference in New Jersey and the nation.

Corrupting The Electoral Process is a Form of Terrorism (0.00 / 0)
Think about it.  Bush's whole rationale for going to war in Iraq centers around terrorism; and how "the terrorists" hate our freedoms and would destroy our democratic way of life.  Well...

In 2002 Congress passed a bill that allowed for a life sentence for the worst kind of malicious hackers.

Yet we don't have that sanction available to punish someone who directly sabotages the heart of our democracy by committing systemic electoral fraud.

I urge anyone who can to get to this on Wednesday and to encourage Rush Holt to put some seriously draconian TEETH into the punishments meted out to those who would dare subvert our democracy by screwing around with voters and/or the voting process.  Obviously, life in prison would be reserved for the worst of the worst; but I could certainly see 10 years, no parole for voter suppression....even if it was just intimidating one voter.

On election night I had a gnawing feeling that we should have been doing even better.  It occurred to me that what was happening was that the people voted against Bushism in such overwhelming numbers that we overcame the "fix" that was probably "in".

As it turns out, my cynicism was justified.  Check out some of the following info and show up Wednesday night!
