The Super Double-Secret Debate Tape Flapperoo

by: DBK

Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 10:48:46 AM EST

The Frelinghuysen campaign must be worried about Tom Wyka, because they have resorted to misinformation and spin.  That misinformation was picked up by the good folks at The Daily Record.  Althought I appreciate the Record covering the story, I am afraid that Fred Snowflack, the editorial page editor, got a couple of things wrong in this article.  Allow me to correct the record, and then I have a few words to say about Congressman Frelinghuysen's role in this.
DBK :: The Super Double-Secret Debate Tape Flapperoo
First, Mr Snowflack wrote that "Democrats said clips of the debate were available on a Democratic Web site, Blue Jersey."  Bluejersey is not a "Democratic web site".  Bluejersey is a progressive web log and is critical of Democrats, where appropriate.  If bloggers at Bluejersey are Democrats, it's only because there is no progressive element in the Republican Party.  If there were a progressive Republican candidate running against a less progressive Democrat, you might see Bluejersey's bloggers supporting that Republican.  It is wrong for Mr Snowflack to assign the web log a party affiliation when we aren't about party, but platform.  I chalk that up to Mr Snowflack being unfamiliar with Bluejersey.  He ought to drop by some time.

Second, "clips" are not available at the web log.  The entire video, unedited, is available at the web log.  This isn't a matter of sound bites or things being taken out of contect to embarrass one candidate or the other.  Just as the League of Women Voters claimed they wanted, which is for any recordings be posted in full so as to avoid partisanship, so has the recording been posted.  You can watch and listen to what was done and said at the debate and make up your own mind about the candidates.  The end of the debate was lost because the recording was stopped at the insistence of Frelinghuysen.

With respect to Congressman Frelinghuysen, he complained that somehow the Wyka campaign failed to police its "own people" because they didn't prevent the recording.  Given that the person who made the recording was not associated with the Wyka campaign and Wyka's people had no prior knowledge that he would be making the recording, what exactly did Frelinghuysen want them to do?  I am still not convinced that the guy who made the recording was with the Wyka campaign.  All I know about him is that he goes by the handle "eagle" at Blip.TV.  He could have been a Frelinghuysen supporter.

Two important questions arise from this nonsense "issue": why is Congressman Frelinghuysen so upset about having the debate available to the people in his district and doesn't he have anything better to worry about than whether a debate that was held in a public place is recorded?

More than one hundred United States service men and women were killed in Iraq this month.  The situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate, with Iraqi citizens being murdered steadily by dead squads.  Frelinguysen supports a "stay the course' policy in Iraq, a policy that is failing.  At home, the defense budget is still bloated beyond all sense, the cost of medical care continues to rise at an outrageous rate, the job market continues to be strengthened only by low-paying, service sector jobs while manufacturing jobs continue to flee overseas and professional jobs are "offshored".  In Congress, more revelations come out all the time about corrupt associations with Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm and inappropriate contact between members of the House and House pages.  The president wants to eliminate our Social Security program with the assent and agreement of many in the Republican-controlled Congress.  Global Warming threatens to do enormous harm to human life on the planet.  We have no solution for our dwindling supply of energy.  And Rodeny Frelinghuysen, who represents the 11th District of New Jersey in the House of Representatives, if hopping mad because someone recorded his debate against his opponent and it became available on the Internet.

He ought to be glad it didn't show him behaving inappropriately with a sixteen year old page instead of throwing around bogus accusations against his opponent.  He ought to prove he wasn't associated with that recording himself.  I am not convinced that the guy who made the recording wasn't an operative from Frelinghuysen's campaign.  Why didn't Frelinghuysen police his own people?

In the end, this is a distraction from the real issues.  Not to be rude about it, but Frelinghuysen should first prove he wasn't behind that recording being made, and then he should shut the hell up about it and pay some attention to the real issues.  He's running for re-election to the House of Representatives, for crying out loud, not Secretary Treasurer of the Student Council.  Tom Wyka, during the debate, made excellent points about the real issues facing us.  If Frelinghuysen really wants to address the voters before they vote, let him address the voters on those issues.

Is this some sort of new strategy? (0.00 / 0)
I've just read where Virginia Foxx of North Carolina refused to debate her opponent if it was broadcast live:  she put such restrictions on it that it effectively would not be seen by any of her constituency.  Is this a new Republican strategy, allowing them to be that much more unaccountable to the public they supposedly serve?  I can't figure how any credible elected official would want to keep the voting public in the dark.

Bingo! (0.00 / 0)
You got it in one.  I said as much to Frelinghuysen after the debate.  His response was to turn away and talk to someone else.

What a self-important so-and-so. (0.00 / 0)
I can't say what is worse - having Frelinghuysen as my rep., or moving south and ending up with Ferguson as my rep.  Ugh.

stay up here! (0.00 / 0)
we need the dems. but if you moved south, you'd soon have stender as your rep :)

An interesting question (0.00 / 0)
I've seen no public polls on the NJ-11 race anywhere.  Is it possible Frelinghuysen's internal polling is showing a tight or even losing race for him, and he knows that anything that gets Wyka out there will make it more difficult for the Republicans?

Is the Wyka campaign even doing polling?

All said, I'd love to see a nonpartisan poll on the race.  The conventional wisdom seems to be that Frelinghuysen will hold on but that seems to be based on previous voting patterns which I doubt are still relevant both due to the national political climate and a shifing Democratic demographic in Morris County.

Money money money money (0.00 / 0)
When you look at the cash situation, I don't think the Wyka people could afford to do a poll.  Frelinghuysen raised $962,985 this year, spent $804,430, and has cash on hand of $798,397.  Wyka raised, $20,524, spent $12,107, and has cash on hand of $8,417.  Don't know how much a poll costs, but given that the polling won't affect the outcome of the race and they can probably determine how to target the message without it, it wouldn't, if I were managing the campaign, be high on my list of things on which to spend limited resources.

CQpolitics.com lists the seat as "Safe Republican" and Frelinghuysen is expected to retain the seat.  The fact that he had to outspend his opponent already $800,000 to $12,000 says a lot.  What possible reason would an incumbent have for spending that much when his opponent is so poorly funded?

I haven't been able to locate any polling data on this race either.  I'm looking for Wyka to crack 44%, based on my own best guess, which would be pretty strong in that district, especially with that funding.  If you take Wyka, I would say you should ask for 14 points if you can get it.  That's 43-57.  If you can't get the points then it's up to you whether you would take 12.  If you take Frelinghuysen, don't give up more than 13.

Sounds To Me Like If Wyka Had Dollar Equality And Could Reach... (0.00 / 0)
...all the voters he would be ahead!

Assuming your numbers are right and there isn't a miracle, I dare say that the Bush agenda will be even LESS popular in 2008 and that many people who now support Bush's enablers will regret it.

Wyka needs to start campaigning and raising money on November 8th for the next run!

Nick, The Congressman IS VULNERABLE (0.00 / 0)
SO is Smith in NJ4. Shame the Powers that be don't see it as DFA does/did. And I agree, Tom has stated he will run twice. Tom will be raising money for '08, in '07. In fact I am scetching out plans for large Dinner in March/June '07.

On the other hand Tom just may get lucky.

Check out my 3 paragraph primer on Polywell Fusion.

Didn't know that (0.00 / 0)
I'll be helping, if I can, in '07 and '08.  I was sort of interested in Wyka's campaign this year in an academic sort of way, but after talking to him and listening to him at the debate, and also after hearing what Frelinghuysen had to say, I believe the 11th District can be much better served by Wyka, and the state and country would also benefit from having Wyka in office.

I'm glad he is looking at another run (especially if he wins this time).

It's difficult to be Republican (0.00 / 0)
these days. If they tell the truth a Bush hit team will shut them down by any means necessary. If they spout the party line they come off as being Kool Aid drinkers from another Universe. John McCain is the perfect example.
Who knew who Tom Wyka was six months ago? We know about him because he cares enough about his country to challenge a well funded deeply entrenched rubber stamp Republiklan. The tide is turning, and with that turning tide eyes are opening. Tom Wyka is the future. The Republiklan party steeped in traditional values like slavery and voter suppression will soon be extinct as will the Frelinghuysen birth rite to a Congressional seat in New Jersey.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
