BUSTED: Why is the Kean-Jr. campaign lying to the media?

by: AdamGreen

( - promoted by jmelli)

The Kean-Jr. campaign press secretary’s credibility is shot. Shot through the heart. And Jill Hazelbaker’s got herself to blame, because in the last 48 hours she has provably lied to the media no less than 3 times--and that gives her a bad name.

First, some quick background, courtesy of Thursday’s New York Times:

The Internet postings came from people calling themselves “cleanupnj,” “usedtobeblue” and “AmadeusNJ.” They  said they were concerned Democrats, “lifelong liberals,” and they were troubled  by the United States senator  from New Jersey,  Robert Menendez…

But the liberal Democratic hosts of BlueJersey.com, the Web log where such comments were posted, smelled something fishy about the postings, and said they traced them to a computer inside the  campaign headquarters of Mr. Menendez’s Republican opponent, Thomas H. Kean Jr.

Now on to the three Hazelbaker lies to the media...plus two “bonus Hazelbaker deceits that are really funny” at the end.

AdamGreen :: BUSTED: Why is the Kean-Jr. campaign lying to the media?

Hazelbaker lie #1 – Hazelbaker caught lying to the Star Ledger

Hazelbaker denied the campaign had anything to do with the postings. “Oh, please,” she said…Hazelbaker argued that  the address Melli said was on the postings is not the campaign’s IP address.

But it is the same IP address that appears on numerous official campaign e-mails sent by Hazelbaker to The Star-Ledger through the course of the campaign.

Hazelbaker said tonight she could not explain why that IP address shows up on her e-mail, but that the campaign’s technical staff assured her Melli had it wrong.

"It's nonsense. That's my comment,”  Hazelbaker said

Ok, seriously, that’s major. Confronted with the IP address  that the fake blog postings were made from, Hazelbaker outright lied to the largest paper in the state – stating the exact opposite of the truth.  Then when called out on that lie, rather than correct herself Hazelbaker just blew it off! That's either the mark of an incompetent press secretary or a shameless liar.

Hazelbaker lie #2 – Hazelbaker caught feeding lies to the New York Times

This time she lied and got a junior staffer to lie too.

Ms. Hazelbaker called the  accusations “nonsense,” and said neither she nor anyone else she knows of in  the office had anything to do with the postings…

The Kean campaign’s technical adviser said that the Internet protocol, or I.P., address that linked the posts to the Kean headquarters was an old one, “from over a month ago.” But an e-mail message Ms. Hazelbaker sent to a reporter on Wednesday shares the same I.P. address.

What the heck was she thinking?  First she lies to the largest paper in the  state, then to the top paper in the nation?

Hazelbaker lie #3 – Hazelbaker caught lying to the New York Times AGAIN:

First, a bit of critical background. Late Monday night, BlueJersey.com broke  a big story – a 1996 Jersey Journal article revealed that Senator Menendez had stated as far back as 10 years ago  that a House ethics attorney cleared his rental deal. Menendez had forgotten her name over time, but this article had it! Ellen Weintraub, a current FEC commissioner. This was huge news.

On Tuesday, the Bergen Record’s Herb Jackson interviewed Weintraub at length and reported Wednesday that she said “she would have advised Bob Menendez” in 1994 that the leasing of his property “was not a conflict of interest.”

Weintraub didn’t remember her specific conversation with Menendez, but said she was responsible for hundreds of congressional offices, many of them asked verbal questions, and many members of Congress rented out property. “Given the circumstances she's read about in news accounts, she would have cleared the lease,” Jackson reported.

Here’s where the lie begins. On Tuesday night at 7:14pm, fake blogger “cleanupnj” (which had Hazelbaker’s IP address) wrote that Weintraub “isn't even sure if she gave Boss Bob approval anyway.” Hmm…somewhat  suspicious, since that fact wasn’t reported until the next day’s paper!  Coincidentally, Hazelbaker’s Tuesday quote to Herb Jackson about Weintraub included the same idea, “his corroborating witness doesn't remember the act of approval.”

The New York Times directly asked Hazelbaker about this:

But Ms. Hazelbaker said many others could have been privy to that information, which concerned recollections of a former lawyer for a Congressional ethics panel…
What?!! Hazelbaker was caught red-handed—fake-blogging about news that hadn’t come out yet! And she lied to the media anyway!

If the fake blogger was not Hazelbaker or another Kean-Jr. staffer under her direction, the only other possibility is that Matt Miller,  Herb Jackson, or Ellen Weintraub snuck into the Kean headquarters and blogged  on BlueJersey.com from there!

BONUS -- funny Hazelbaker deceit #1

Jill Hazelbaker is VERY busy.  “Oh, please,” she told  the Star Ledger. With all that time spent lying to the media “I’m very  busy. I don’t have time to focus on Blue Jersey. ... I don’t blog.”

But the edits to Robert Menendez’s Wikipedia blurb made from her IP address tell another story.  No less than SIX DAYS were spent obsessing over and changing Bob Menendez’s wiki entry in July and August!!

I suppose this makes sense from a time-management perspective. Like Hazelbaker, we all know that Wikipedia is the #1 source of information for swing voters. Right? (Just like they get their information from BlueJersey.com political blog!) “Oh please…I’m very busy.”

BONUS -- funny Hazelbaker deceit #2

On Tuesday night, fake-blogger “usedtobeblue” took a proud stand on behalf of press secretaries everywhere!

You guys are upset about the attacks on Menendez, but isn't it a little bit hypocritical to then attack his press secretary. Not to mention, Kean (sic Jr.) is winning so she must be doing something right.
Hahahaha… Someday Jill Hazelbaker will look back at this and agree with me that this is just awesome!

And to throw her a bone, I agree with one point – she’s indeed doing something  right. I must say, those wiki entries look meticulously edited.

Unfortunately for her, she has some improvement to make in the “covering her tracks” category. After the above posting was made, BlueJersey.com’s Juan Melli followed with this

What smells fishy is that both "usedtobeblue" and "cleanupnj" posted comments 15 minutes apart from the same exact IP address from two accounts that were created within 10 minutes of each other.

When a press secretary’s lie after lie after lie is followed with deceits so bad they are humorous, one has to question why any reporter would ever take anything that press secretary says at face value again.

Why are they astroturfing? (0.00 / 0)
How about, because they have internal polling that shows Tommy the K is running well behind Senator Menendez?

Why else would a busy press secretary, or anybody else in a campaign office, spend their time in childish mischief?

Desperation. That's why.

LOL. Thanks for curing my usual short-attention-span - I laughed my way all the way through to the end of this post.

Watergate Anyone? It's the Cover Up Stupid!!! :-) (0.00 / 0)
A simple apology and attribution to "low level staffers/volunteers" would have ended it as a blip.

Now she's escalated the damage.

Junior, are you going to fire Jill or back her and put your own "crdibility" on the block?

JUNIOR staffer (0.00 / 0)
Don't you just know it'll get blamed on a "junior staffer"? Whenever someone gets caught like this, it's always a "junior staffer."

Of course, they'll call it a "low-level staffer" so as to not use the word "JUNIOR".

The Tangled Web (0.00 / 0)
It gets even worse.

It seems likely that every computer in that headquarters has a keystroke monitor.  Whether that surmise is correct or not; a SERIOUS internal investigation would easily expose the perps. Republicans are known for their great organizational/record keeping proclivities, eh?

Now, would the culprits be willing to fall on their swords and lie about who authorized their access/tactics?

The activities of a federal Senatorial campaign must be, in some way, liable to federal election laws.  No?

Surely, it can't be legal to use campaign funds to pay for such anti-democratic decptions?

Hell, if this kind of merde IS legal; then THAT is a scandal in itself that should be remedied by new legislation!

If it's NOT legal; the Bush Justice Department should appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate!  (Let's not hold our breath, eh?)

This strikes at the heart of the whole "rationale" for Kean's candidacy; if he refuses to publicly condemn and clean up this mess...he becomes 100% complicit and 100% accountable.

All this because Xpatriated Texan did some basic journalistic homework!!!  :-)

Lie # 4? (0.00 / 0)
From the NYT article...
"The Kean campaign’s technical adviser said that the Internet protocol, or I.P., address that linked the posts to the Kean headquarters was an old one, “from over a month ago.” But an e-mail message Ms. Hazelbaker sent to a reporter on Wednesday shares the same I.P. address."

I like the Menendez camp response (0.00 / 0)
from the article:
Matt Miller, a Menendez spokesman, said he had no connection to the BlueJersey squabble. Commenting on Ms. Hazelbaker, he said, “If I had proven to be such an embarrassment to my campaign and caught in a lie publicly, I’d resign before I was fired.’’
Heh.

Paging Donald Segretti! Paging Mr. Segretti! (0.00 / 0)
There's a call for you, sir, from a Ms. Hazelbaker. You can take it in the lobby.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

HARD TO BELIEVE! (4.00 / 1)
Hazelbaker should resign from the Kean campaign immediately......because she's much too over-qualified for the job. She is gifted with the one prerequisite that is needed in order to work for GW Bush: She's an accomplished liar! The only problem she has is that she needs to work on what to do when you get caught...e.g. change the subject, blame someone else(Clinton, Joe Wilson, Liberal media, Hollywood elite, etc.), send a "news" story in to Fox News, raise the terror alert, etc. So even if she's not quite ready for prime time, I say call her up now anyway... a few pointers from Carl Rove and she'll be fooling naive voters throughout all of America. It would be a shame to limit this great talent to only New Jersey.

See? Now this is getting good (4.00 / 1)
I know people's response to astroturfing and sockpuppeteering is sometimes a hearty "meh..." but what this episode shows is that if you can identify a sockpuppeteer, and do a little digging, you will almost invariably find other horrendous ethical lapses. And that's not trivial. Oregon's own Ms. Hazelbaker, so proudly celebrated in the Congressional Record, has shown that she is a liar and a cheat, and as such should be shunned by the members of the press who rely on her to amplify her candidate's views, such as they are.

The only people that care about this are hardcore Democrats. (0.00 / 0)
This doesn't affect property taxes, or corruption or anything of substance in New Jersey at all. It comes down to Juan's word against Jill's. And Jill's word is "nonsense, I'm busy" - which seems more mature to me. Don't we have anything better to do?

http://thekingoffunnyfaces.blo...

The swing voters will care... (0.00 / 0)
Jill, um, oops, I mean Kire,

If the Kean campaign is crowing about Menendez's supposedly "corrupt" record, it's not going to look good to those swing voters that a Kean campaign aide surreptitiously posted on Dem site, posing as a "disgruntled" Democrat.

Don't take my word for it (0.00 / 0)
Look at what the NYT and Star Ledgers reporters said.

[ Parent ]
Not really (0.00 / 0)
First of all, this takes the momentum away from the Kean Jr. folks and makes them talk about this silliness instead of what they want to talk about.

It also puts them on the defensive.

And, frankly, I don't think she looks mature when she is saying "That's not our IP address" when the e-mails she is sending to the reporters have that IP address on them.

Kiru IS one of us (0.00 / 0)
A point I missed in another reply to her, but still:

In one post, Kiru says, get over it, nobody cares, let's move on.

In another, Kiru says, Menendez should give back the money. This IS a big deal.

Okay, well, pick one and stick with it already.

Campaign ethics DO matter. Kiru, smearing Bob Menendez' character IS a big deal, whether it happens inside of bluejersey or out on the campaign trail.

He did not commit a crime. He is not guilty of a lapse of ethics. And yet, the republicans think this has traction, so they will not let it go. Kiru, they've even got YOUR head spinning -- is he a liar? is he a thief?

The principle of the Big Lie is to repeat an untruth so often that everyone comes to believe it.

The only antidote to the Big Lie is the Whole Truth.

Silence = ...

[ Parent ]
the whole truth isn't getting out there (0.00 / 0)
The only thing good for us that's getting out there is that Jill Hazelbaker doesn't know who is using her computers.

I'm just saying it would look a lot better if he gave the money back already. I know that's not going to happen, but telling the people of NJ that it was approved because a Democratic lawyer said so doesn't make it stop looking like Menendez took $300,000 from a federally funded agency.

I never said get over it. I said don't get hysterical about it. This is a tiny little thing. I made a huge deal about a little phone call that Scott Garrett made to my house last year, and that's all that anybody remembers. He didn't break any laws by calling me out of the phonebook.

Look, I read that all of the computers in Kean's campaign office have the same IP address. So it is probably true that Hazelbaker doesn't have a clue about it, and that she has better things to do is the message people are going to get. Joe taxpayer isn't going to say, "Ooooh, Gotcha. Na Na Na, Boo Boo. Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire". Compared to the perception that Menendez is a thief, it's just a distraction not a solution.

[ Parent ]
the whole truth (0.00 / 0)
You still don't get the whole truth. It's not just about an IP address. It's also about the content of the posts, which narrows down the identity of the poster.

The information posted by that person in Kean Jr's office had to know very inside baseball kind of information. Stuff that was not known to anyone except a few political reporters at the time it was posted, as well as the people those reporters spoke with for their articles - the campaign spokespersons for Kean Jr and Menendez. Jill Hazelbaker and Matt Miller were probably one of the very few people with that information, besides reporters. Whether Jill posted it herself or leaked the information so an intern or someone else in the office could post it for her is irrelevant.

[ Parent ]
So it narrows it down to her... (0.00 / 0)
Does that make the information less true? It only confirms my suspicion that this Weintraub character is partisan and shouldn't be relied upon as the solution to this whole problem. So she approved it. She's just another crony, is all they need to say. It still smells "fishy", like Menendez took $300,000 from the federal government. Tell me why he shouldn't give the money back.

I am the Devil's Advocate, not the devil Jill Hazelbaker herself (LOL). I am a long time contributor to Blue Jersey.

[ Parent ]
Weintraub a Crony? (0.00 / 0)
Weintraub is definitely a Democrat, but she was appointed to the FEC by George Bush at the insistance of John McCain.

Was this before or after 1996? (0.00 / 0)
I know, it doesn't matter.

I surrender.

Gave what money back? (0.00 / 0)
The rent he collected at arm's length from a lawful tenant? Why on earth would anyone return that?

[ Parent ]
Fine (0.00 / 0)
I've said enough. You're right. I'm done.

http://thekingoffunnyfaces.blo...

[ Parent ]
He was cleared by the ethics committee (0.00 / 0)
Why should he give back the money if the deal was cleared through the ethics committee back in 1996?

THAT would be tantamount to admitting he was wrong, and would tank the election.

[ Parent ]
Good answer. (0.00 / 0)
Thanks, huntsu

I will say no more.

[ Parent ]
If Junior wanted to help NJ property taxes (0.00 / 0)
He would have stayed on the state's finance committee--wouldn't he?  And how often do US senators make policy about property tax relief?

It matters to voters when the candidate and his staff are liars.

Uh, buh-bye.
