Interesting Kornacki Piece in the NY Observer

Steve Kornacki, formerly of PoliticsNJ.com and now of PoliticsNH.com and the New York Observer has written a very interesting piece about the possibility that Bob Menendez might have to make a late exit from his U.S. Senate re-election campaign against Tom Kean Jr as a result of the ongoing and possibly politically-motivated federal investigation into his dealings with a Hudson County not-for-profit.

If he does cut and run, who should replace him?  Does anybody think that Albio Sires would step aside and let him run for his old Congressional seat since the two men are such close friends and Hudson County cronies?

Since there is already going to be a contested primary for State Senate next year between the incumbent, Bernard Kenny, and the challenger, Brian Stack, maybe Albio would prefer to throw his name into that ring with Big Brother Bob's blessing.

Everybody knows that State Senator is a far more powerful position than Congressman, especially for a machine hack like Sires, who would also be able to keep his mayoral salary.  Between that, a State Senator's salary, and all of the assorted bribes, graft, kickbacks, etc. that come from being a powerful, dual-officeholder, a Congressional salary pales in comparison and requires the elected official to have some understanding of policy and some degree of vision for both his district and the nation, which is probably far more than Albio can handle with far less perks than he is used to.

Even if none of this comes to pass, I wouldn't be surprised to see Albio retire and go into the private sector before the next redistricting.
