The headline reads "Rivals in New Jersey Senate Race Mute Party Affiliations", yet the article provides no evidence of Senator Menendez hiding the fact that he's a Democrat. Did the author even bother doing basic research like clicking through to the candidate's websites? Let's peruse...

Kean Jr, Republican?

Hmmmm....is he an independent? I thought his dad was a Republican. Gee, I'm not so sure any more. Maybe we can figure this out by process of elimination. Let's check out that other guy...

Bob Menendez, Democrat

Ahhh this one is sneaky, too! He almost got me with the smaller font, but if you're patient enough to read his logo all the way to the end, you can see where he grudgingly admits to being a Democrat. They must have shoehorned it in there, a technique the New York Times seems to be pretty good at.

The only way ... (0.00 / 0)
Kean Junior is an "independent reformer" is because he is reforming with no one else.

Seriously, won't some reporter ask Kean Juniot for just one example of what he reformed in the state house, and one example of what he would be able to reform in the Senate?

As Goes Disney...so Goes (0.00 / 0)
the NYT?

Maybe there really is an establishment?

We should learn from this (0.00 / 0)
The lesson is that a story -- a narrative, if you will -- will trump any number of facts.  The story of muting party affiliations is so good that it doesn't matter that it's not true (for once) in Menendez's case.  Another was the playing down the war story.

The false balance is another lesson.  The mainstream reporters will always 'balance' their stories, regardless of the truth.  Meanwhile, the right wing doesn't hesistate to attack and tell their story.  Where are our stories?
