Life Father, Like Junior

by: Thurman Hart

Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 12:46:01 PM EDT

For a couple of months now, I've heard Democrats say, "Junior sure isn't his daddy."  Well, I wasn't in New Jersey when his daddy was governor, so I took their word for it.  The thing is, it's looking like Junior is cut from exactly the same cloth as his daddy - and it's a cloth that makes New Jersey look like a saddlesore schoolmarm.

Ok, maybe a kid's toy.

Here's the thing.  Big Daddy Kean is all over the place pushing this stupid 9/11 fantasy movie (I hear it has hobbits and everything).  So his son, walking in the shade of daddy's shadow, criticize's Bob Menendez for the Republican Party falling down on the job of improving national security since 9/11.

So someone tell me - how are they different again?

Then we find out that Big Daddy actually had nothing but praise for Bob Menendez and his leadership on national security issues.  But Junior Kean is saying that his daddy told a big fib.  "It's just a form letter," he claims.

So if Big Daddy lied when he wrote the letter, why should we believe him now?  I mean, to say Bob Menendez is a leader in a letter, then deny it with your little boy's voice has to mean that one of them is a flat out liar.  Which one?  Which one had motivation to lie?  The 9/11 Commissioner who "didn't have a political agenda" as Republicans proudly proclaimed or the state senator who cried wolf?

Watch Big Daddy and Little Boy twist and squirm around this issue:

[Junior]Kean has repeatedly seized on Menendez's role on the committee as evidence that Menendez deserves blame for the removal of the risk-based funding provision.

"Bob Menendez sat in the conference committee that stripped out risk-based funding from the House bill ... Then he signed the conference report and signed the legislation," the Republican candidate said during a June debate on WNBC.

and THEN...

Jill Hazelbaker, a spokeswoman for the Kean campaign, said the candidate would make no apologies for his attacks on Menendez. She said Menendez is an "intense partisan" and that hurt his ability to win over Republicans.

"He was ineffective on the committee," she said. "Had he been effective and able to bridge that partisan gap, perhaps Wyoming would not have received more homeland security funding than New Jersey."

and THEN....

Kean Sr., former governor of New Jersey, yesterday downplayed the significance of the letter he sent to Menendez.

and THEN...

[Big Daddy] said he could not recall exactly how many or which congressmen the letter was sent to, but he acknowledged it would not have gone to those responsible for removing the risk-based funding proposal.

But THEN...

"He never fought us on anything," Kean Sr. said of Menendez. "Every time I saw him, he said he supported (all of the recommendations).

"The frustrating thing is that's what they all say and yet they don't pass them."

Oh yeah, and...

The elder Kean declined to say whether he believed his son's criticisms of Menendez were fair.

"I'm a father; I'm not going to get involved in the campaign. I would not call any congressman ineffective," he said.

Yes, because letting your own dear Little Boy get away with a malicious lie isn't "getting involved".  Sounds like someone needs a spanking for being a bad boy - I just can't tell if it's Little Boy or Big Daddy anymore.

And the last word on the Kean Family Spin Doctors?

Menendez said he was disappointed in Kean Sr.'s characterization of the note as a form letter. "I would expect more. We think he meant it then, and I hope that because of politics he wouldn't be changing his view now," Menendez said.

In June, Menendez introduced legislation in the Senate to implement the rest of the 9/11 commission's recommendations. The measure replicated a House bill by Reps. Carolyn Maloney of New York and Christopher Shays of Connecticut that Kean Sr. has endorsed.

Yep.  I'm gonna need me a new icon:

This one just wasn't meant to be a family photo.

A somewhat hopeful thought (0.00 / 0)
Maybe Daddy's paid involvement in ABC/Disney's quick unraveling PR nightmare of a partisan hackumentary (and, as you note, his very high profile promoting it) will tarnish him enough to mute the impact of the dubiously timed investigation of Menendez. Because, after all, Daddy's the one running against Menendez.

True (4.00 / 1)
I've been saying this often. Because little Tommy Kean dropped the Jr. from his campaign materials, many voters think Thomas H. Kean is the candidate.

It shouldn't make a difference, because if its a Kean, its bad for New Jersey.

You have to be kidding me... (0.00 / 0)
I understand that you might not like TK JR. but saying his father and family has been bad for NJ is just wrong. The man was elected with the largest vote plurality in NJ history and has the highest approval ratings of any ex-politician in NJ. Obviously the average resident of NJ must think that senior has done good things for NJ. And you are saying he has done nothing right? You have to be smoking something not to realize the family has contributed great things to NJ. Just

If you can point out where I said that, please do.  What I said is that Junior is a chip off of the lying, pandering, politician-to-the-bone block.

I also notice that you defend what Sr did years ago - not what he's been doing to keep his name in the press while he carefully refuses to say anything bad about his son's campaign and denies anything good about Menendez.

And I remember TK Sr.'s race-baiting, free-spending, public education destroying, environmentally irresponsible reign very well.  Ask yourself this--if Tom Kean was so great for NJ, why are we still trying to crawl out of the budgetary hole he put us in?

If he's such a respected, upstanding figure, why is he now playing politics with the 9-11 commission's findings as a paid consultant for the ABC/Disney Fakeudrama, "Path to 9-11"?  Why won't he speak to the contributions made to his son's campaign made by executives whose companies had business coming up before him?

My question to you is what are you shooting?
