How to Nationalize a Local Race

by: Juan Melli

Wed Sep 06, 2006 at 10:09:33 AM EDT

Aronsohn seeking Internet buzz. That's the title of a Bergen Record article about a new online ad created by Paul Aronsohn's campaign.

The youtube ad highlights Congressman Scott Garrett's extremist views on abortion rights and will be emailed to all 14,000 New Jersey members of NARAL. This is the kind of targetting that the internet is incredibly useful for, and the hope is that those viewing the ad will forward the link on to like-minded friends. Garrett opposes a woman's right to choose even in the cases of rape or incest. The video shows Garrett speaking about Roe v Wade at a "March for Life" rally in January of this year:

"We want to shine the light of day on the truth of the terror that abortion is. Because we know that over 30 years ago a dark cloud spread across this nation. The dark cloud spread darkness in this nation and closed the eyes to the political leaders of this nation."
Watch the video here, and forward it along:

That's how you do it. That's how you nationalize a race. Good job, Aronsohn staff.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Nice! (0.00 / 0)
I haven't been able to post much lately, just popping in to catch up a few times a day. What an awesome surprise! Great work Aronsohn team!

As a side note, the black hat alone is effective. What the heck was Garrett thinking? It's like Paul is running against the bad guy from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"!

I like it (4.00 / 1)
But Garrett has SO MANY extreme positions!  Next do one on Katrina aid, then one on voting rights, and keep on exposing Garrett for his ridiculous opinions until Election Day.

If anyone can come up with some more video of Garrett looking and acting like a total psycho, I'll gladly splice together a video for them to use!

Exposing Garrett's wingnut views is important... (4.00 / 1)
...that said, I'm a little disappointed in this ad, for a couple of reasons:

1)  Paul Aronsohn is a relative unknown, and we don't get to know him any better through this ad.  This is archetypal "I'm not him" campaigning, and while the Republicans have dug themselves a pretty deep hole, I'm not sure that's going to be enough in this district.

2)  Isn't sending the YouTube link to NARAL members kind of preaching to the choir?  Aren't these people who aren't going to vote for Garrett anyway?

3)  The abortion issue feels "played out".  Believe me, the right to choose is important, but focusing on this issue this year, combined with the grainy Garrett footage makes this ad look as if it were taken out of a footlocker in the attack.

To me it makes Aronsohn look out-of-touch on the issues that are really important this year, which are Iraq, Iraq, Iraq, Iraq, jobs, and health care.  Why on earth isn't Aronsohn playing to one of his strengths, which is an issue that IS contemporary AND relevant to NJ, namely stem cell research?  He could do much the same ad, appear in it himself, and focus on stem cell research -- something I know he feels passionate about, and about which he is at his most effective speaking about.

4)  If he wants to focus on abortion, why not combine it with the NSA spying issue and call it "privacy"?  I've been saying for years that the abortion battle ought to be fought on the privacy meme, not the "right to choose" meme.  If you don't have control over your own body, what do you have control over?  That is a winning way to do it, and I wish some Democrat would do it.

5)  How effective is YouTube going to be?  Yes, the netroots are up to speed on YouTube, but even if you want to argue that this will bring out the youth vote, how important is abortion to them?  Yes, they take it for granted, but a bunch of old farts like us telling them their rights are in danger hasn't been effective up till now, why would it work just because it's on YouTube?  Somehow I can't imagine a lot of soccer moms and seniors clicking over to YouTube.  I post videos on my blog from there and my mom doesn't even know how to play them.

6)  Doesn't he have to say "I'm Paul Aronsohn, and I approved this message"?  Or does the fact that it's on the internet mean he doesn't have to?

I recommend your post. (0.00 / 0)
This ad makes me shrug my shoulders.

70% (0.00 / 0)
I don't like the way Aronsohn uses the 70% statistic. Who cares? How does it affect me as a constituent? It seems like it's "nationalizing" the race by begging NARAL members for money, but removing the constituents in the 5th district, by telling us what we believe.

I'd like to see the email that comes along with the video. Does it come from NARAL or does it come from Aronsohn?

Aronsohn was talking about this video since last winter. I believe it's all he's got. Pretty lame, I say.

I meant footlocker in the attic.  Freudian slip.  ;)  (Why can't we edit posts???)
