Burlington County Weekly News Roundup

by: Jason Springer

Mon Sep 04, 2006 at 10:02:07 PM EDT

(That's two for South Jersey in one night. Come on North Jersey - you gonna let South Jersey kick your butt like this? - promoted by jmelli)

Until we have a Burlington County Blue Journalist, I figured I would do a little summary of what's going on.  Here is a map of the municipalities in Burlington County which goes from south of Trenton, to the Delaware River, to Exit 4 on the Turnpike and then down to the border of Ocean & Atlantic Counties.

Congress

  • Depending on where in the county you live, your Congressman could be Jim Saxton who this week is working on gutting the flounder fishing economy at the Jersey shore, Rob Andrews or Chris Smith.  Congressman Andrews is seeking re-election and we are lucky to have Rich Sexton challenging Saxton in NJ-3 and Carol Gay challenging Chris Smith in NJ-4.

    Environment

  • On the heals of the Franklin Daycare mess, Willingboro now has a daycare center caught in limbo as a result of new regulations by the Governor.

    Immigration

Riverside is still blazing the immigration trail with their controversial law.  We have covered this here on Blue Jersey.

    Healthcare

A 17 year old from Medford appeared on the MDA telethon today to tell his story and help raise money for reserach.

    Supporting the Troops

7 year old twins from Bordentown are planning a lemonade stand to help a Marine from North Hanover injured in Iraq.

    County Democrats

The Burlington County Democrats elected a new chairman, Rick Perr in June and have launched a new website.  There are 2 seats up for Freeholder and the County Surrogate seat up as well.

    Development

  • The Medford Ice Rink is on the auction block after it was closed in 2005.

  • A home based ministry when it began, the Grace Baptist Church has moved to a new building in Westhampton.

    that's a sad story on the daycare (0.00 / 0)
I think DEP should be able to clear it up quickly, based on the quotes.  The mercury story is so horrifying that I understand the caution.

    Saxton's environmental record no fluke (0.00 / 0)
I wouldn't be so quick to fault Congressman Saxton on his decision regarding the flounder fishing question. From what I've read it appears that the conservationists support the tighter limits. Jim Saxton may be an idiot when it comes to many issues - especially his ignore-the-facts and constitution-be-damned votes on Iraq and terror issues - but he has always been a strong ally for environmental issues in Congress. His record is actually better than many Democrats in the House.

I probably won't vote for Saxton. And the reason being that I am still pissed off about the way he went to Serbia and tried to undercut Clinton's diplomatic maneuvers during the Kosovo crisis.

Here's the bottom line on Saxton: You can fault him on the war issue and the way he kowtows to Bush on social and tax issues, but he is hard to fault on environmental issues. Saxton would make a fine park ranger but we could probably find a better congressman to represent us.
