Where's Junior on Immigration?

by: Juan Melli

Fri Aug 25, 2006 at 10:12:48 PM EDT

He's focused his campaign almost exclusively on state issues, so why won't he state his position on the latest controversy in Riverside?
Republican candidate Thomas H. Kean Jr. says strict immigration reform would be a top priority if he's elected. Yet Kean won't say whether or not he supports an ordinance adopted by Riverside Township, Burlington County, which prohibits residents from hiring or renting to illegal immigrants.

Kean's opponent, Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, said Thursday he opposes the Riverside ordinance, which is being challenged in federal court.

(emphasis mine) This might explain the silence:
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanics make up nearly 15 percent of the state's population. An estimated 350,000 illegal immigrants live in New Jersey.

A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released in June showed that 65 percent of New Jerseyans said that illegal immigrants who have lived and worked in this country for at least two years should be permitted to eventually seek legal status.

Junior says he wants strict immigration laws - in fact, he supports deporting 12 million illegal immigrants, but he won't say whether he supports this law. What's he so afraid of?

lemme see if i get this (0.00 / 0)
so junior wants strict immigration laws and a here in our fair state, a town passes a strict immigration law, but he's not sure how he feels about it.  why am i not suprised.  just another day on the trail w/ junior.  you just can't make this shit up.

In effect, other communities have the same rules (0.00 / 0)
First, as a voter I support amnesty and giving these immigrants the opportunity to be here legally.  If they are already here working, then they should have the opportunity to participate as real residents and citizens and not have a marginal status.

Re the law on renting:  Almost all apartment complexes require a credit check and this means the renter has to give the apartment management a Social Security number.  If a person has no SSN, he or she can not rent an apartment in an apartment building.  So even though some towns don't have such a blatant law, the housing blocks are in effect because no one is questioning why landlords should have the right to a tenant's SSN and credit report, when the tenant is not borrowing any money from the landlord.  Renting an apartment is not a loan.  If there are damages, that's what a deposit is for.
