Exelon Running on Empty

by: Media In Trouble

Fri Aug 04, 2006 at 02:02:46 PM EDT

While Exelon is being a blowhard to the BPU about "taking it or leaving it" I wonder if the BPU will take this story into consideration:
Exelon Corp.'s 619-megawatt Oyster Creek nuclear power station in New Jersey dipped to 53 percent of capacity by early Friday, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a report.

On Thursday, the unit was operating at 98 percent.

The Oyster Creek station, which entered service in 1969, is one of the oldest reactors in the nation. It is located in Forked River in Ocean County, about 60 miles east of Philadelphia.

One MW powers about 800 homes.

HMMM... My calculations makes that 262,456 homes without power (if your home was one of them please let us know in the comments).

So... if Exelon can't operate Oyster Creek when it is most needed, why should they be able to operate the entire PSE&G Energy grid (of which I am a customer)?

There was another recent moment in time when a huge power company failed to supply a large area with Power for (ahem) 10 days or so.

Good folks at the BPU, if Exelon keeps bullying you around just remember Exelon = ConEd. If you ask me, allowing this takeover to take place would just increase your workload with future hearings about entire grids blacking out, and businesses shutting down, and rotten food in refrigerators.

Not really getting your point (0.00 / 0)
The article you site doesn't say anything about Oyster Creek not at fully capacity because of a problem with the plant.  Actually, it seems to be indicating that demand on the plant is noticeably down today because the temperature across the state is down about 15 degrees from yesterday (and the heat index is down around 25 degrees).

OK... (0.00 / 0)
Does a temperature drop of 15 degrees = a 53% drop in demand?

The article left me with the impression that something had gone wrong.

I wouldn't be suprised... (0.00 / 0)
that going from 101 degrees to 86 degrees would lead to a 45% drop in demand on that single plant.  If you figure most air conditioners are set to somewhere between 68 and 72 (normal room temperature), then air conditioners only have to work half as hard to get there.  I would also expect that more people are going to leave the AC in their homes off during the  day while at work now that temps are far more moderate.

My feeling on the Reuters report is that it's just info for investors to know that today's revenues from power coming from that plant aren't going to be nearly as high.  If there was an actual problem with the plant and/or blackouts on the scale you say, there would be stories about it on the AP wire or on one of the newspaper websites in the state.

Ahhhh...The fruits of deregulation! (0.00 / 0)
A little taste of California is being brought to us uncultured savages in the wilds of NJ. A power outage here and there, a little hardball, some threats(thinly veiled) and hey, before you know it we get a situation like this:

A guy over at DU was writing last night, about his electric bill in CA. Last month, he payed $790.00. Yes, you read that number correctly. No extraneous zeros there. His friend, who lives two towns away and is under a municipal power company, payed, last month, $78.00. Other from Califirnee chimed in and reported similar power bills to the $790.

But of course, these power companies will go on at length about how they need all these mergers and acquisitions to bring "economies of scale" to their consumers.

Riiiiiiiiight. You'm betcha, Slappy. You'm betcha. Right after pigs file flight plans.

Look at the three deregulated industries: Telecom, Energy and Airlines. All three of them have failed to deliver on the consumer benefits(and in the case of the airlines, just simply committed slow and gory seppuku, with a boat-motor food processor). And the malfeasence. Can't forget the malfeasence. Telecom, especially, is quite egregious when you consider the yawning abyss between what they promised in congressional hearings, back in 1996, and what they have delivered to date. Besides the value of preferred stock, that is.

If this Exelon deal goes through, the energy consumers affected will be wishing it was merely an XXXL alien anal probe that was vexing them. It's gonna really smart.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Re (0.00 / 0)
The capacity measurement is an indication of demand.  Demand was at 98% of what they could supply on Thursday, Friday it dropped.

For everyone who wants to boot Oyster Creek, that brings up an interesting question.  If you want to close it down, where do you want to site a new conventional plant that will replace the electricity that is very badly needed?
