Princeton College Republicans for Lieberman

by: Juan Melli

Wed Aug 02, 2006 at 02:31:14 PM EDT

We had heard earlier that the Lieberman campaign was bringing up a bunch of New Jersey folks to help out his flailing campaign, but we didn't think he was this desperate. Markos got a hold of this email sent by the Princeton College Republicans:
---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 18:52:09 -0400
From: "[windows-1252] College Republicans"
Reply-To: College Republicans
To: collegerepublicans@PRINCETON.EDU
Subject: Unconventional Primary Campaign Opportunity (LIEBERMAN)

Republicans,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. In June, I informed you all of a campaign opportunity for State Senator Tom Kean race for U.S. Senate in NJ. Continuing the tradition of letting you about summer campaign opportunities here is a much more unconventional  option:

Incumbent Senator Joe Lieberman (Democratic Primary)
Lieberman is facing a tough primary fight versus far-left anti war activist Ned Lamont.
----------------------------------------------------------------
August 4-9th Primary Campaigning:

Elissa Harwood '09 (NOT A CLUB MEMBER) has organized a series of buses departing on Friday August 4 from Washington DC (6:30 Foggy Bottom Metro) and NYC, destination: Hartford, CT

People interested in campaigning for Lieberman in the Democratic Primary will have lodging accommodations paid for (by his campaign), as well as food and transportation.

Buses would bring you back on August 9th.

If Interested, E-mail: XXX@Princeton.EDU or call her
at (757)-XXX-XXXX.

New Jersey Republicans are pitching in to save their favorite Democrat. Now, if they actually thought a Lamont primary win (and a Lieberman third party run) would help their own candidate win in the general election, why are they fighting so hard to keep Lieberman in power?

What's the Problem? (0.00 / 0)
why is this news?  why wouldn't college Republicans help out another Republican candidate even in Conn?  sheesh.  juan needs a vacation.

I said it over at DK, (0.00 / 0)
but what does it say about NJ that we have all of these Rs with the extra time to head up and campaign for Lieberman? Don't get me wrong. It's nice when they're not around. But does it mean they're taking the NJ races lightly? If that's the case, I'll contribute to help send some 5th district College Republicans up to CT!

Really! (0.00 / 0)
Let's hire a full-size drop dumpster truck, fit it with a "College Republicans for Lieberman Tour 2006" banner and meet them when it's time for them to leave for Connecticut.

In the interest of comity, of course. ;-)

It's not a dumpster truck. It's a series of tubes.

Actually... (0.00 / 0)
I have it on expert advisement that the Internets is made up of not tubes, but old cocaine snorting straws, left over from the Disco era. They were found in a subterranean level under the old Studio 54, in pristine condition.

Lieberman could run as a Republican (0.00 / 0)
Since CT doesn't have the same sore-loser law that NJ does and the Republicans are running a nobody (most polls show him running a distant third to Lamont and Lieberman), I still believe that there is an outside chance that when Lieberman loses to Lamont on Tuesday, the Republicans could dump their candidate and offer the Republican nomination to Lieberman.

I think that this College Republicans effort could be a first step towards that effort.  To date, Lieberman has said that if he won as an Independent, he would organize with the Democrats, but I think that rhetoric could change very quickly between this Tuesday and Labor Day weekend.
