| There was a Congressional District 5 kick-off event for a Democratic candidate on Sunday, and it was not for Jim McQueeny who had abruptly backed out of the race and cancelled his event scheduled for the same day. Instead 30-year old J Paul Castle was at the Smokey Joe's Kosher BBQ in Teaneck. Of the three prospective candidates, he has the most active facebook and Twitter accounts. He is actually (gasp!) seeking donations here and has registered with the Federal Elections Commission, which the other candidates have not.
Castle spent four years in the Marines in Iraq, Lebanon, and Washington, D. C. through early 2007. Although he has never run for political office, he was Director of Political Outreach for Douglas Herbert's 2010 campaign for Congress in the 11th CD against Republican incumbent Rodney Frelinghuysen. He is currently a Senior Account Executive at Tekserve where he works with the Apple Corporate Sales Team and Apple's Fortune 1000 customers.
As he ramps up his campaign leading to the June 3 primary, Castle has said, "Scott Garrett claims he wants to protect the family budget yet his vote against the extension of payroll tax cuts is a contradiction to that statement." In Marine terms, he says he views Rep Garrett as one who follows orders blindly rather than one you could trust to get you out of harms way." A Cliffside Park resident who plans to move to Teaneck, he is a virtual unknown in CD 5 and has no warchest, so he has a huge uphill climb but is making some of the right moves. |
