Good to see the charter school bill pass committee (0.00 / 0)
A total moratorium would be even better.  But, of course, Christie would never sign that.  He may or may not sign the local control bill.

    Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I'd be curious to see if Christie would veto this bill. If he did, he'd be effectively telling NJ taxpayers that they can't have a say in how their property taxes are spent.

He's already said he agrees with the concept (0.00 / 0)
But I'm sure he'll have no trouble finding something wrong with the bill, if he wants to.

    What's the difference... (0.00 / 0)
between having a say in how your property taxes are spent vs. having a say in how your income taxes are spent?

When the state takes the income tax and distirbutes over 50% of the revenue to 31 districts (who are free to do with it as they see fit) isn't that the same 'taxation without representation'?

    There is an inconsistency (0.00 / 0)
If taxpayers are allowed to vote on public school budgets, then they should be allowed to vote on charter school budgets. Make it consistent.

    Exactly... (0.00 / 0)
    I've no problem with that...

And if you want to vote whether or not to accept the charter school, you should also be able to vote to close the pubilc school. Right?

I'm all for consistency. If you fund your local schools through property tax, you should definitely be able to vote on the budget. But if your district is recieving 80% of the budget from the state (as in Newark) there should be some state oversight to represent the interests of the state taxpayers who provided that funding. And I think that exists in Newark because the state has oversight there.

But there are districts (New Brunswick, Hoboken) where they are using majority percentages of state aid (that we all provided through income tax) and those districts have used the money to build schools most districts would envy. In those cases, I would prefer some state oversight of how the money is spent.

I mean, if you are a resisdent of Hoboken, why wouldn't you vote to to build a high school with a swimming pool and all the amenities not typically found in typical districts, if you know it will have no impact on your property taxes.

Then are you opposed to... (0.00 / 0)
...residents being able to vote on school budgets?

    [ Parent ]
    Nope... (0.00 / 0)
I'm just pointing out that there are huge amounts of money for schools that you provide where you don't get to vote on the budgets currently.
