Cablevision Workers win Union

by: Hetty Rosenstein

Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 07:06:40 PM EST

Cablevision workers won their union election today, beating back a brutal anti-union drive from the Dolans.

We're looking to organize cable and telecomm everywhere.
This was a great election and we are so proud of our new Brooklyn union members - the Cablevision 99%.

Read more about the campaign here.

...and now a State Worker Contract? (0.00 / 1)
Great news for those workers! Welcome to the Dues Paying world.

....Now what about those tens of thousands of state workers who still do not have a contract after 7 months ?

That's wonderful ... (4.00 / 1)
and I am very supportive of unionization drives.

But this blog is about NJ, and this drive was in Brooklyn.  If you could tie it to NJ efforts, NJ union members, etc. that would make it better for the blog.

And maybe get it on the front page!  :-)

Importance of this drive (3.50 / 2)
I made it quick but I should have spoken about the importance of this drive.

We don't have manufacturing in this country any longer.  We are losing our public sector middle class.

If we are going to save the middle class and the union movement we will have to organize workers such as the cablevision workers, and we will have to withstand the unbelievable corporate power against even the tiniest inroads into these non-union industries.

The Dolans put up an amazing fight.  The hired one of the worst union busting firms - Jackson Lewis - and workers were subjected to 2 hour a day captive audience meetings.

The pressure was enormous.

But these workers saw through it and stood up.

We hope that this is a signal for change.

So it is true that this was about a drive in Brooklyn and not New Jersey, but just as the Ohio Referendum matters to us here, this drive was about what we must do and what we can do everywhere.

CWA /Not even 1 person for ME (0.00 / 1)
It sounds like the whole multi-million dollar CWA union leadership team was all hanging out in Brooklyn while the ME fight was going on in Trenton.

Shame that loyalty only goes one way.

The CWANJ leadership has shown its true colors.

Good at asking for help, but never there to help.

Cablevision was a nice victory but CWA should have also had people in Trenton like the NJEA.
