Senate Democratic Leadership

by: deciminyan

Mon Jan 09, 2012 at 04:22:21 PM EST

I'm re-posting this from Monday. That morning,  one of the busiest days in the Senate, the Democratic leadership granted Blue Jersey a significant amount of time for this interview. It was overshadowed by the tragic events that evening, but the remarks by Senators Sweeney and Weinberg set the stage for the new session, ahead.

This morning, Senate President Stephen Sweeney and incoming Majority Leader Senator Loretta Weinberg took time out of their busy day to give Blue Jersey readers an exclusive interview. They talked about the accomplishments of the last session, goals for the new session (which starts tomorrow), the new initiative for marriage equality, jobs, energy, and the recent controversies about residency requirements in the last legislative election.

Sweeney Stands Tall (4.00 / 1)
All the haters ,who honestly do not even know WHY they hate the Senate President, MUST watch this interview with and open mind.

This IS a guy you want on your side!!!

Great interview!!!!

P.S. Sweeney will talk to everyone and he will be honest.

You are not... (1.50 / 2)
...doing your guy any favors with your victory lap.  Anyone who hates Sweeney as much as I do knows why he or she hates him.  I have listed my grievances with him at length at this site and I am not going to repeat myself.

I am happy that he is finally doing the right thing and that it will finally put all 120 legislators on the record on this issue, but unless he somehow produces a vetoproof majority, I will continue to say too little and too late.

I do not have Steven's superhuman capacity for forgiveness and I do not have to.

What was your reason for giving this comment a troll rating?

Being a front page blogger here is a privilege that I lost years ago for behavior that was far less anti-social than what you have been guilty of lately.  For good or ill, Rosi is probably not as quick as Juan was to discipline people who cross a line, but for the site's sake, if not your own, I think that you need to reassess your priorities.

Sweeney doesn't know the name of his political party! (4.00 / 1)
its the "Democratic Party", not the "Democrat Party".

UGH!

Shame and petty (4.00 / 1)
Apparently you listened and watched the whole interview and your only comment was that the Senate President might have mis- pronounced a word!

How petty!

[ Parent ]
more than a mispronunciation (4.00 / 2)
It is a common Republican frame and proof that Sweeney is a Republican at heart.

Petty? (0.00 / 0)
I have no problem with the substance, and I'm not yet ready to label him as a Republican or "repugnican", but I DO feel that the highest ranking Democratic member in the NJ State legislature should know the correct name of his political party and not repeatedly use a term commonly used by Republicans as a slur.

and you think that is petty? I'm sorry, that is significant.

If you are a "friend" of his, you should run along and tell him to "get it right" and move on. He has already shown he can correct mistakes.

Not surprising (0.00 / 0)
After all, he is a "Reagan Democrat."

Thanks for posting this. (0.00 / 0)
It makes a huge difference when the elected leaders actually speak earnestly to their constituents and without the static of the media translation.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Looks Better second time around (0.00 / 0)
Listen and have an open mind.

There are some on this site ,being elitist or just plain haters ,who will never " warm up" to the Senate President.

That is a shame especially since if you look at what he has done most would agree with his agenda.

Did he make some mistakes, OF COURSE!As they say, " who shall cast the first stone".

But there he is, sitting and discussing issues with the Progressive, liberal media ,while seated next to the person he elevated to a position of power in the caucus who happens to be the leader of the State's Progressives.

The haters and the elistists will offer their snide remarks ,but for the majority of open minded people who visit this site I simply say, " listen"!

Every way the wind blows (0.00 / 0)
I recall at the time of Sweeney's non-vote on ME two years ago, when we actually had a governor who would have signed it, that you vigorously defended Sweeney's actions (er, lack of action). Now you say he made mistakes but only, it appears, after Sweeney himself says so. Are you capable of independent thought or do you simply go whichever way the Sweeney wind blows? I'm genuinely curious.

Sweeney's actions... (0.00 / 0)
...will speak louder than your words.

Steven Goldstein did a rather effective job at giving credit where credit is due insofar as Sweeney's leadership on this issue will at the very least force every legislator in Trenton to be on the record going into 2013, which is huge.  If he can somehow manage to override a Christie veto, it would be miraculous and make his statewide ambitions worthy of consideration.

The difference between you and Steven, however, is that he has the credibility needed to speak to progressives on behalf of what Sweeney is doing and get us to consider giving him the benefit of the doubt.  You do not.  Every time you comment, shilling for Sweeney and calling those of us who do not trust him elitists and haters, you damage everything that Steven is trying to do.

So if you do not care about the impact of your words and just want to comment for the sake of being read, by all means, please continue to do so.  I am not personally invested in the rehabilitation of Sweeney's image and think that this whole exercise is intended more to raise his statewide profile and Christie's (anyone who thinks that Christie doesn't relish the opportunity to veto this legislation and burnish his conservative credentials doesn't understand Christie) national profile than anything.

But if you want us to give Sweeney the benefit of the doubt and allow his actions to do your talking for him, then just go away and let the events unfold as they will.  In fact, I will go so far as to make you this deal.  If you agree to go away and stop writing here, I will agree to never say another negative word about Sweeney.

Not important enough to make a "deal " with (0.00 / 0)
I would never make a deal with an elitist.

My words bother you because they are true.

...I think I will stick around and be a voice of reason

You had to make a second reverential post on this? (0.00 / 0)
One wasn't sufficient?

If all you're going to do is fellate Sweeney, please keep it behind closed doors.

Gratifying to see Senate President Sweeney say... (0.00 / 0)
...that while he initially "wasn't there" on giving taxpayers a say in whether charter schools should be established in their districts, he has changed his position.

Perhaps the legislation that was held up in the last session has a better chance in this one?

I was pleasantly surprised (0.00 / 0)
with his answer to that question.

Sudden turarounds (0.00 / 0)
It would appear that the light that Sweeney has suddenly seen is likely coming from Sen. Lautenberg's seat.
