Bill Pascrell Releases Endorsement List

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Jan 04, 2012 at 03:22:03 PM EST

UPDATE: After this was posted I heard from Philip Swibinski of Team Rothman saying his candidate's endorse list has grown since we published it , and that Team Pascrell's claim of Bergen Freeholder David L. Ganz' endorsement is not correct.

Congressman Bill Pascrell today released a list of Democrats endorsing him in the primary in the reconfigured 9th congressional district, which will pit two incumbent Democrats, Pascrell and Steve Rothman, against each other.

Rep. Bill Pascrell Endorsement List is after the fold.

It's a long list, longer than Steve Rothman's endorsement list, which was released almost immediately after he announced formally that he's challenging Pascrell.

Jim Florio is on this list. And if current members of the NJ congressional delegation are staying officially neutral, former congressman Herb Klein is not. Klein's home base, like Pascrell's, is Passaic. He was elected to Congress from the 8th congressional district in 1992, and spent 4 years (1977-81) as Executive Director of the Passaic County Democratic Committee.

Pascrell's list - which includes Passaic Chair (and strong Pascrell advocate) John Currie and his vice-chair Barbara Tanis, 7 legislators (including Sheila Oliver), Passaic Sheriff Richard Berdnik, 9 Freeholders (from Passaic, Bergen & Hudson), and 3 mayors (including Haledon's Dominick Stampone, who posts here). Municipal leaders for Pascrell - there are 7 - include Hawthorne's Jeff Gardner. The man he replaced as Hawthorne's Democratic municipal chair, outgoing Senator John Girgenti, is one of the legislators listed

Pascrell's list also dips into Council members, which Rothman's did not - 28 are listed. Another category not represented on the list Rothman released Dec. 28 is Board of Education members; Pascrell lists 11 Dems among them supporting him.

A group of Latino elected leaders from Paterson declined to endorse either Democrat, citing the "respect and admiration" held for both men. That would have to be a disappointment to Pascrell; the city has a large Latino population. Paterson is the 9th's base; Pascrell was born there, once served on the city's Board of Education and the Board of Trustees of Passaic County Community College (main campus is in Paterson). He was mayor of Paterson for 7 years.

Rep. Bill Pascrell Endorsement List is after the fold.

I guess this answers those who claimed (0.00 / 0)
Pascrell would be on the short end of the endorsement battle.

There is still time for Steve Rothman to do the right thing and challenge Scott Garrett.

And me too. (4.00 / 1)
Even though I live in the 5th, I used to live in Paterson and know how important Pascrell is to the people he represents.  He has my support as well.  He has courage and really cares for his constituents.  Courage, sadly, is something Rothman lacks.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Courage (0.00 / 0)
If Bill Pascrell had courage, he wouldn't have been the last Democratic Congressman in NJ to agree to cosponsor the DOMA repeal legislation and wouldn't have had to have been shamed into doing it by Blue Jersey.

Rothman's decision has nothing to do with courage or a lack thereof.  It has everything to do with choosing to represent the people who he has represented for most of his time in Congress.

If Fair Lawn had been placed in CD9 instead of CD5, would you be saying that either Pascrell or Rothman should move to CD5 to take on Garrett?  I seriously doubt it.  So why should Rothman be forced to run there just because he moved to Fair Lawn a few years ago.

I don't know if Assemblywoman Connie Wagner is going to run against Garrett or not, but her PolitickerNJ quote that got you so unnecessarily angry notwithstanding, she has the potential to be a stronger candidate in that district than Rothman.

So you can punish Rothman for making a decision that he and only he is entitled to make for himself, despite the fact that he has been a more progressive Congressman than Pascrell, but it wouldn't be fair and it wouldn't be right.

And if Pascrell was so important to the people of Paterson, why are so many electeds there remaining neutral in this race?

Bert, you are not entitled to your own facts. (0.00 / 0)
"So why should Rothman be forced to run there [CD5] just because he moved to Fair Lawn a few years ago."

Here's a NY Times article from October 27, 1996, reporting on Rothman's first run for Congress. It's linked to the third page so you can read it for yourself:

"'''I am a proven fiscal conservative,' said Mr. Rothman, who became Englewood's youngest Mayor when he was elected at age 30. He now lives in Fair Lawn."

For what it's worth (and apparently it's important to you), Congressman Rothman has lived in Fair Lawn for his entire 15-year tenure.

Endorsements by BOE members (0.00 / 0)
Since New Jersey's Board of Education elections are non-partisan, I think it is better for BOE members to keep their official titles out of endorsements.

Who would have thought... (1.00 / 1)
...that Jeff Gardner and John Girgenti would be on the same side of anything again?  Maybe the Peaches and Herb song, "Reunited", should be the theme song of the Pascrell for Congress campaign.

Maybe Jeff should spend some time with Bill and John at Peter Murphy's bar in Totowa, let them get nice and liquored up, and ask them what they really think about the LGBT community before he lends his name in support of Pascrell's campaign.

What a scummy statement that is. (nt) (0.00 / 0)

Why (0.00 / 0)
should the Hawthorne Dems be the only town in Passaic to endorse Rothman? Even though Hawthorne was under the old 9th I would not be surprised if Pascrell has spent more time and sent more federal aid to the town than Rothman ever did.
