Report DCCC offered Rothman $1 million to challenge Garrett

by: Rosi Efthim

Thu Dec 29, 2011 at 05:43:38 PM EST

Now, who might put out a story like this?

PolitickerNJ is reporting that according to "two sources with knowledge of the offer" say that DCCC offered a cool $1 million to Steve Rothman if he stayed in the 5th to challenge Scott Garrett. And that the offer would slide up to $2 mil if polling showed the matchup competitive.

The sources are unnamed.

What would be the motivation for somebody to tell politicker this?

DCCC? No. Rothman has already declared his intentions in the 9th, no reason to screw a 15-year House member. Even if the story's true, it doesn't serve DCCC to embarrass a congressional Dem.

Rothman's team? Obviously, no. Only hurts the boss.

There's a lot of anger directed at Rothman now from some corners. You can read it all over our pages, but not from me. Disappointment, even for some a sense of betrayal, that Rothman would "take the easy route" and compete with another Democrat in the district Pascrell now lives in, but with constituents the bulk of which Rothman represents. Resentment that Rothman declined to challenge a Tea Party love-object in a district with a clear GOP advantage.

I have no idea if the item is true or not. But I can't help thinking who gains in a story without evidence or confirmation from the players that makes Rothman look bad, or look like somebody DCCC might write off. Am I too cynical?

And I thought 2012 was going to be fun.

...I'd be happy to take up the challenge - I would have to run from out of district (not but a part of a mile), but why should that worry me?  :-)

I agree w/ you Rosi about being disappointed at Rothman - I'd have gladly helped him in the 5th (as a nearby 11th resident).

On a happier note, I did get re-elected in a landslide in Byram in November. Will be sworn in for term #2 on Jan. 3rd. Happy 2012 - onwards and upwards!

Congratulations!

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Someone needs to do it (0.00 / 0)
We have to find some way to beat Scott Garrett, he is so right wing, that  I think he lives in an alternate universe.  Are people in his district really that conservative or are they just not paying attention.

what are you implying Rosi? (0.00 / 0)
Because you obviously leap frogged over the possibility that IT MIGHT BE TRUE and went straight to ConspiracyTown.

Read more carefully, Jay. (0.00 / 0)
"I have no idea if the item is true or not."

I didn't leapfrog over anything.

I don't have a dog in this fight. You do.  Maybe before you accuse me of "conspiracy" you should make your own preference in the race clear.

It's the circumstances in this story that raise my eyebrow. Not the personalities. If redistricting had pitted Pascrell and Garrett against each other, and Pascrell chose to run against Rothman instead, and this story came out? I'd have written the same diary, with the names reversed.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

you're wrong again (0.00 / 0)
are why are you the only one in NJ who thinks i have a dog in this race? because it's not true.

I did notice your line that "i don't know if it's true of not" but given the rest of the tone and the content of your diary I simply don't believe you.

add me to that list (0.00 / 0)
I definitely think that you have a dog in this fight, despite the fact that Steve Rothman agreed to sponsor the DOMA repeal legislation well before Bill Pascrell, Jr. did and did not have to be shamed into doing it (by you interestingly enough).

I think that, once again, you have been sucked into the Norcross machine's North-South mindset and you know as well as I do that if Frank Lautenberg retires at the end of his current term, Rothman would be a more formidable opponent against your favorite conservative, corrupt, war-mongering, campaign money misspending, wife-swapping*** Congressman, Rob Andrews than Pascrell would be.

In fact, I think that the reason that you were so adamant about Rothman running in CD5 is that you know that if he won there this year, there would be just as much pressure to stay there and not run for the Senate in 2014.  So please do not insult our intelligence and say that you do not have a dog in this fight when it is very clear that you do.

***this is not intended to describe Andrews as a 70s-era, key partying swinger, but seemed to be the best way to describe the switcheroo that he pulled off with his wife back in 2008 after he ran against Lautenberg, got his butt whipped, and then was able to run for re-election to his Congressional seat, because his wife "won" the Democratic nomination and so willingly stepped aside for him.

I think that it is safe to say that Andrews is the only Congressman who represents a district that would allow such a thing to occur and has a wife who is so compliant that she would give up her chance to become a Congresswoman in favor of her husband.  What century is it down in Camden County anyway?  The 21st or the 19th?

Who cares if it is true? (4.00 / 1)
Running in CD9 is only easier if Steve Rothman beats Bill Pascrell, Jr..  If he loses, then it was clearly just as perilous a choice.  Aside from the fact that more of Rothman's current constituents live in CD9 than CD5, Rothman was also probably thinking about the long-term ramifications of representing CD5.

What happens if Rothman beats Scott Garrett, Frank Lautenberg decides to retire at the end of his current term, and Rothman wants to run for U.S. Senate?  How many people here and elsewhere who are bitching and moaning and calling him a coward would be criticizing him for putting his own ambitions ahead of his mostly new constituents?

The John Adler experience could have been a factor as well, giving Rothman reason for pause and thinking that he might have to change the way that he votes to suit a dramatically different demographic of constituents.  Whatever his reasons were, they were his reasons, and he is entitled to them, but more than anything, if this story is true, I think that it would say something good about Rothman, which is that he cannot be bought and paid for by the DCCC.

And if this story is true, I hope that the DCCC holds on to their $2MM and is prepared to give it to Assemblywoman Connie Wagner when she proves that she can compete with Garrett.

Maybe the leak helps (0.00 / 0)
The leak could have come from Pascrell's side to embarrass Rothman. But the way I see it does have the advantage that if Connie Wagner runs and shows she can be just as competitive as Rothman, the DCCC will be obliged to put up the money anyway. The thing for DCCC to do now would be to take a few polls to see if Garrett is vulnerable, and who has the best shot to beat him. Then they can make the same offer as they did to Rothman.

http://christiegonewild.blogsp...

Is age a factor? (0.00 / 0)
I'm surprised nobody has brought up the age factor. Pascrell is 74 and Rothman 59. They both have the same seniority, but Rothman seems to have a much better chance for longevity in terms of accumulating seniority and favorable treatment for his district.

http://christiegonewild.blogsp...

If Paul Aronsohn Had Been Given 2 Mil... (0.00 / 0)
...he would have won, even with the old district lines.

Garrett is vulnerable.  Connie Wagner can kick his ass if she's got the fire in the belly to run an aggressively progressive populist campaign.

Garrett only wins with the light of so his hidden agendas can't be seen.

Let's stop merely cursing the darkness and light a hundred thousand candles!!!

DCCC (4.00 / 2)
doesn't always have the best track record backing good upstart candidates (see Christine Cegelis). And I think it's fair to say they would see a guy like Rothman, who has been elected to the House 8 times, as a different kind of risk/benefit ratio than even a very good legislator ready to move up. I think if DCCC had this kind of money ready to go, it was attached to candidate Rothman, not to the district.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

[ Parent ]
You're probably right, but... (0.00 / 0)
...that doesn't make it right.  It would be up to the progressive grassroots to remember this and demand that they make the same investment in whomever the Democratic nominee might be if he/she achieves the same metrics.

Mind you, I would not expect them to invest the $1MM upfront on someone other than Rothman, but if whomever the nominee proves that they can be competitive to the same degree as Rothman, then he/she should get the whole $2MM.  If they don't, the word should go out that nobody who cares about progressive politics should donate another dime to the DCCC ever again.

We agree there. It certainly does not make it right, or what I'd want.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I know (4.00 / 1)
You were just stating how things are, not how they should be.  It is up to us to try to make how things are how they should be as well.

[ Parent ]
I decided that a long time ago (0.00 / 0)
The DCCC has a consistent record of supporting corporatist blue dogs against good progressive candidates.  Not to flog Howie Klein's site yet again...oh, what the heck, why not...but Down with Tyranny keeps a running series on them.  Donating to the DCCC is a waste of money.  Pick the candidates you like and donate directly, or through Blue America PAC.  The DCCC, like the DSCC and the post-Howard Dean DNC, is useless.

Hey Rosi, (0.00 / 0)
When did you become a DCCC insider.  What evidence (other than your strong opinions) do you have to say this:
I think if DCCC had this kind of money ready to go, it was attached to candidate Rothman, not to the district.
because it sound to be like just guessing.

she pays attention (0.00 / 0)
You do not have to be a DCCC insider to know how they operate and while I understand that the Norcross machine prohibits thinking, those of us who are not beholden to it are willing to go out on a limb from time to time and hypothesize based on our past experiences.  It is called the scientific method and it can be applied to political science as well.  Give it a try sometime.

I find anything NJPoliticker has to say (0.00 / 0)
suspect myself.  I don't like the political hacks that hang out there.  Their total dislike of Loretta and bad reporting on her is disgusting.  I wouldn't put it past them to start the rumor themselves...

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
