Can Reporters Count?

Jessica Calefati, Star-Ledger, 12/1/11

Supporters of a bill to give scholarships to tens of thousands of students in failing public schools to attend private and parochial schools rallied on the Statehouse steps today, urging legislators to take action.

Most of the 2,500 demonstrators were parochial school students participating in what organizers called a "field trip" and a "lesson in civil rights." The mostly teenaged students wore bright blue scarves emblazoned with an image of a life preserver.

Jason Method, Gannett, 12/1/11

With time running out in the state legislative session, some 500 school-choice advocates - mostly Catholic school children - rallied in front of the Statehouse on Thursday to push for a bill that would begin a test school voucher program.

Uh...

Well, at least they agreed most of the demonstrators were little "drug mules."

ADDING: Chris Christie has always condemned taking kids out of class to protest. So I'm sure he'll be condemning this rally. Yep, any minute now...

Wait a minute ... (4.00 / 2)
If all the protesters were private school students or parents of private school students, then the people advocating for this would simply be sucking dollars from public schools.

The advocates are not students who want to get out of bad public schools, but students who are already in private school and are looking to get a taxpayer-funded discount.

Not to mention... (4.00 / 1)
...the unconstitutional taxpayer support of religious instruction.

If parents want their kids to have religious instruction, there are plenty of after-school programs in churches, mosques, and synagogues. A taxpayer-funded religious school violates the sacred principle of separation of church and state, no matter how much the religious zealots say the two are segregated.

And as if we need an example of why OSA would be a BAD idea, check out the comments to Colon's article on the Hall Institute (11/30) where people pipe in making sure their religious institutions will get a piece of the voucher pie.....one suggests quotas - the Catholic, Yeshiva and Muslim schools dividing up the pie so they can all benefit from tax payer money.....

Here's a link to that - (0.00 / 0)
I think this is the article Momotombo is referring to: Vouchers, Children of Color, and the Big Lie.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

...will not get much, if any, of the pie, because with the exception of Jewish families in Elizabeth, most of the families that they serve do not live in the chronically failing school districts (Jewish families in Englewood and Teaneck might qualify, but I do not believe so - Senator Weinberg could probably clarify that question) that the OSA's scholarships are supposedly limited to.  If that has changed, then Ray Lesniak, the top Democratic supporter of the OSA s/hould reread the bill and change his rhetoric accordingly.

In fact, if I am correct about this, most of the Jewish day schools, which do not serve families living in urban areas, will be forced to compete with the JEC in Elizabeth for philanthropic dollars on an unfair playing field if the OSA passes.  Sadly, I doubt that most Jewish day school families are aware of this.

What about Lakewood? Isn't that located in an Abbott district?
