Whitman Quits the Republican Party

by: huntsu

She wrote a book a few years ago called, "It's My Party, Too," but it appears things have changed.  Christie Todd Whitman, the former savior of the Republican Party, is urging Republicans to run for President as independents.

Former New Jersey Gov. Christie Todd Whitman (R), who is leading a group to draft a third-party presidential candidate, is encouraging Jon Huntsman to make an independent bid for the White House, Politico reports.

Said Whitman: "I would hope he would do it, frankly. He's someone that I would support."

It's amazing to me that the Republican Party can continue to win elections, to take Drumthwacket, to win the House and have a shot at winning the Senate when they drive solid conservatives like Christie Todd Whitman and Jon Huntsman out of the party.

A Huntsman candidacy... (0.00 / 0)
...makes more sense if Newt Gingrich or one of the other far-right-wingers wins the Republican nomination than if Romney does.  The problem is that if he and/or Ron Paul wants to run independently, they really can't afford to wait until after a Republican nominee has been chosen.  They have to start organizing three months ago to have any chance of getting on the ballot in 50 states.

Paul at least could win the Libertarian Party's nomination, which would put him on the ballot, but even Huntsman's best chance to get on the ballot by winning the Americans Elect nomination is not guaranteed by a longshot.  If anything, I think that Huntsman could be better served by dropping out of the race before Iowa, endorsing Obama immediately thereafter, and trying to lobby for a scenario where it would be announced that Joe Biden is not going to be on the ticket in 2012, but will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, the job that he really wanted, if/when Obama-Huntsman win the general election.

Why amazing? (0.00 / 0)
Christie did not win the GOP primary by a large margin, primarily because he only ran as conservatively as he had to in order to win.  If Democrats were smart, we would have organized an effort to get people to register as Republicans and vote for Steve Lonegan in the primary.  It would not have been that hard.  For the same reason, we should be organizing to get Democrats and independents to vote for Michele Bachmann in the upcoming caucuses and primaries.

As far as the House is concerned, when you have districts that are gerrymandered to preserve incumbency as our current districts are, any Democrat or Republican can win them, which is why progressives should challenge establishment Democrats as aggressively as the teabagging wingnuts challenge the Republican establishment.
