Flying Jersey Boss One

It's a fact of life. Wealthy and powerful people have perks that the other 99% don't have. That's fine. I would rather see them spend their "hard-earned" money locally and employ Americans than buy a villa on the Riviera. But especially now, with the growing gap between the "haves" and the "have nots", those more fortunate people should be aware of how their extravagant spending is perceived.

Case in point: Much has been written about Governor Christie's use of a taxpayer-funded State Police helicopter to attend his son's baseball game. While the governor eventually paid back the incremental operating cost of that ride, the incident emphasized how out of touch he is with the realities facing his constituents.

Now the governor's consigliere, George E. Norcross III, is emulating the state's chief executive with a helicopter of his own.

Norcross is an insurance executive, and is working to obtain permission to use his corporate chopper to go in and out of his headquarters office in Evesham. As reported in the Courier Post, test flights were conducted yesterday into this densely populated area of South Jersey. The goal of these flights is to obtain approval from the State Department of Transportation for ongoing usage of part of an adjacent parking lot as a place for Norcross' chopper to land and take off.

No doubt, Norcross' company will receive approval for these flights. Despite the proximity to power lines, the noise that will permanently impact residents, and the safety concerns in the busy Route 73 corridor, I'm sure Norcross and his colleagues will be flying in and out of the site soon.

Executives like Norcross feel their time is valuable, and they say that the use of an expensive and environmentally-unfriendly mode of transportation is justified. But is the noise and safety risk to the neighbors worth it?

There's a better solution. If Norcross needs a chopper, why not use the South Jersey Regional Airport? It's less than seven miles from his office, in a more rural area, and is better equipped to handle aircraft safety than a makeshift helipad on a parking lot. This would be a step in the right direction and would make Norcross a better neighbor to the other 99% in the area.

Nah! Nah! Nah!

Norcross has a helicopter so he must be a bad person.

Nah! Nah! Nah!

This is a post that deserves " top billing" on one of the most popular web sites in New Jersey?

This post makes you look petty and silly.

Norcross has a helicopter! Norcross has a helicopter!

Please let us get beyond this nitpicking nonsense!

Every day. Then it will be "nitpicking."

Hey, when you became court jester, did you have to buy your own hat?

Nowhere do I begrudge a high-paid executive for using a helicopter. My point is that there are legitimate safety and environmental concerns with bringing the chopper into a densely populated area while there is a better solution only a few miles away.
