politickernj gets it in print before we do, Majority Leader Barbara Buono has, as this morning's caucus meeting to determine leadership gets underway, taken herself out of the running.

This morning, votes are lined up to elect Loretta Weinberg Majority Leader for the next Senate session, after a power-sharing arrangement was suggested by Senate President Steve Sweeney, and rejected by Sen. Buono.

Rosi Efthim :: "No concessions": Buono out of the running for Senate Majority Leader
Senator Buono posted her letter here at Blue Jersey

November 9, 2011

Dear Colleagues:
Two years ago, I was honored to be selected as the first woman to serve as Senate Majority Leader in New Jersey history.

This was an important milestone for our state, which has always led the nation in promoting diversity and inclusion. It was an important milestone for the Democratic Party, which quite literally relies on women to maintain its electoral majorities.  And, it was a great personal milestone for me.

But I never thought a title was more important than a set of principles. I never believed that being in a particular position was more valuable than being true to yourself and to those who elect you.  Majority Leader is a position that demands concessions be made - concessions I am unwilling to make when I do not believe that they are right for this state and this party.

The idea of creating a co-majority Leader is both bad politics and bad policy.  It would be a terrible precedent to set, diminishing the position.  One cannot help but note that this only came up when the first woman held the job.
Therefore, in anticipation of Thursday's caucus meeting, I am announcing that I will not seek re-election as Majority Leader.

This is not about intrigue and innuendo.  This is about clarity.  Tuesday's legislative elections underscore the reality that the people of New Jersey demand a check on the Governor.   I am proud to serve as an independent voice defending our core Democratic principles.
I thank you for your trust and friendship in bestowing on me the honor of breaking an historical glass ceiling. And I look forward to breaking many more.

"Power sharing" (0.00 / 0)
I guess the demand was made because the job was just too demanding for a woman.  Or maybe to bridge an ideological gap between Buono and Weinberg.

Must have been one of those reasons.

Women's Political Caucus (0.00 / 0)
Yes, to 12mileseastofTrenton's point, that is precisely the point that was made by the Women's Political Caucus, which stepped in on behalf of Buono, that dividing a job in two only when a woman hold it is like saying women cannot do the job.

What murkies the water here is that the 'power sharing' - a bad name for what would have gone on - would have involved another totem among women in politics, Sen. Weinberg, who now stands to inherit the position alone.

Women's Political Caucus, yesterday, on that: ""We adore Loretta, and this is not about her," said Lisa Mizrahi Kaado, president of the Women's Political Caucus of New Jersey, an advocacy group. "This is really about preventing one woman from advancing by using another woman to block her."

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Where was the WPC... (0.00 / 0)
...when Bonnie Watson Coleman, a fierce and independent advocate for progressive issues, was prevented from advancing from the position of Assembly Majority Leader to the position of Assembly Speaker and Sheila Oliver, a bought and paid for hack, was used to block her?

Smart Move by Buono (0.00 / 0)
In a classy move she stepped aside.

She will certainly remain an advocate for many important issues but inside the caucus State Senator Weinberg will weild much more influence.

A stong advocate for Womens issues and ME has now attained a seat at the table.

Progressives can not complain now. Their leader is inside the room!

Leader? (0.00 / 0)
What makes her "leader" of the progressives?  Certainly, your condescending attitude doesn't.

Someone who supported Steve Sweeney over Dick Codey is not the progressive "leader" in this state.  If there is one.

Codey-Watson Coleman... (0.00 / 0)
...would be better as I would prefer to see Buono positioned to become Senate President.

Of course, in an effort to bridge (0.00 / 0)
the divide in the party, both geographically and otherwise, Nelson Albano might not be a bad choice for Codey.  He's a construction union guy who voted against pen-ben.  And he's popular from his work against drunk driving.

A Roseland-Vineland alliance.

A Classy Move! (4.00 / 1)
This frees Buono to be more uncompromisingly progressively aggressive than she might otherwise have been in the role of Majority Leader....and, from my perspective, give Loretta an opportunity to push the establishment of the NJ Democratic party further into the 21st century.

If that establishment drags her back into the old ways...then she all have lost her soul, but I am confident that our feisty and principled Loretta Weinberg will continue to fight for reform and for progressive values in all ways...and that she and Senator Buono will become a dynamic duo in practice..and that they will mitigate the damage that Christie has done...and wishes to inflict upon NJ in pursuit of his right wing agendas.

Good luck (4.00 / 2)
to both Barbra and Loretta, keep fighting for labor and progressive ideas and thank you both for you service to NJ.

I don't get it (0.00 / 0)
I hope my stupid questions will be forgiven because I am pretty clueless about this stuff.  But I always thought there was a rift between Sweeney and Buono because she refused to support his sellout to Christie's agenda.

Maybe I'm just wrong about that, and if so then someone will tell me.  But if I'm right, then why is Senator Weinberg an acceptable substitute?  I mean, she's plenty acceptable to me, because I consider her a reliable anti-Christie voice, but that seems to be the same thing that got Buono in trouble.  Can someone explain what I'm missing?

Weinberg understands the Process (0.00 / 0)
Yes ,there is a " process". It might not be pretty. It might not be acceptable to the " pure".

But it does exist and State Senator Weinberg will be more effective than State Senator Buono was or is.

When State Senator Buono decided to work outside of the process she effectively forfeited her leadership post. Buono did neither herself or her cause any good by going rogue.

It is true she stood by her convictions ,which is admirable. But State Senator Weinberg will also stand by her convictions ,BUT she will be more effective since she knows and works the "Process".

Some TALK about getting things done, others GET things done.

State Senator Weinberg is not a talker ,she is a doer!

"Process" (0.00 / 0)
Translation - keeping your shut.

Good question (0.00 / 0)
Not stupid at all.  The only logical answer is that  Weinberg won't  give Sweeney any aggravation while he sells out to the Republicans.
