LD-11 GOP Liars Caroline Casagrande & Mary Pat Angelini can't smear Vin Gopal

Can you get yourself re-elected by lying to voters?

LD-11 Casagrande and Angelini go after Vin GopalOf course you can. Candidates circling the ethics drain do it all the time. And that's what Republicans Caroline Casagrande & Mary Pat Angelini are banking on; if they suggest to enough voters that rising Democrat Vin Gopal is a crook, maybe they can keep their jobs.

The GOP's clearly concerned that Gopal might win. He's an effective, eloquent and inspiring candidate. Gopal's entire team, among other nods, won Democracy for America's national endorsement (disclosure: it was my pleasure to alert DFA to their strengths). Asbury Park Press endorsed Gopal, too, urging voters to consider him over Mary Pat Angelini.

So. What did Casagrande and Angelini do? They sent mail , produced by NJ GOP but approved by the two of them, that attempt to tar Gopal with the crimes of Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas, who went to jail for corruption. This kind of crap is right out of the Karl Rove playbook; create a scary-enough bogeyman and the voters will do what you want.

Rosi Efthim :: LD-11 GOP Liars Caroline Casagrande & Mary Pat Angelini can't smear Vin Gopal
But what's different this time? The piece is so heavy with its own bullshit that APP, LD-11's paper of record, is calling out Casagrande and Angelini, blasting out this headline:

Decency absent in GOP mailing

The recent campaign flier approved by Republicans Caroline Casagrande and Mary Pat Angelini in the 11th District Assembly race seeking to smear Democrat Vin Gopal was beyond the pale - even by New Jersey standards.                   - APP

Star-Ledger agrees. Its PolitiFact gives the GOP a rare Pants on Fire! rating.

The GOP mail proclaims: Welcome to the World of Vin Gopal and depicts a man's hands, handcuffed behind his back and clutching money. Newspaper clippings on stark black read: Aide to former Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas pleads guilty to money laundering. Does the mail explicitly say the aide was Gopal? No, but it sure as hell suggests it was. Republicans know most people will only scan, and not sit down to read. The truth? Gopal was a 20-year-old Penn State University student who got 4 college credits and modest salary as Vas' campaign manager in 2006, where he worked with volunteers. Gopal did not handle any illegal money, and had no part in the scandal. The facts? The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said it had never heard of Gopal and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office confirmed that Gopal had no connection to the Vas case.

How do the Republicans answer for themselves? They point out that they never technically said Gopal went to jail. "Everything in the mailer is 100 percent true," said Tom Fitzsimmons of the GOP's campaign. That's the political ethics of Casagrande and Angelini: slide out from the rock of responsibility on your own slippery slime.

Got some time to help out? Volunteer for Vin and his team.

Disgusting! (4.00 / 2)
I'm surprised (tho I guess I shouldn't be) that these two capable women would "sign off" on such a - "no resemblance to the truth" smear!

Speaking of disgusting (0.00 / 0)
What about what's happening to Joe Cryan and Barbara Buono?

As offended as I am with the direction that the Democratic leadership battle is taking, the only silver lining that I can take out of what will undoubtably be two more very cloudy years for progressives is if Senator Weinberg becomes Majority Leader.

Both Senator Buono and Assemblyman Cryan were part of leadership teams that ousted Senator Codey as Senate President and Assemblywoman Watson Coleman, who should have become the Assembly's first African-American Speaker as well as its first female Speaker.  If they are going to live by the backroom deal, then they have to be prepared to die by the backroom deal.

Politics is bloodsport and if Buono and Cryan wanted to become Senate President and Assembly Speaker or just keep their Majority Leader positions, they should have organized primary election challenges throughout the state against the legislators who were most likely to vote against them.  As long as legislators like Buono and Cryan allow inside baseball games like these to be decided solely by insiders, they are only going to be as powerful as the bosses who back them and right now, the bosses in Middlesex and Union County do not wield that much power.

None of this nonsense can be compared to the LD11 ad, which is as dirty as politics gets.  I don't entirely understand why Vin would have been willing to work for someone like Joe Vas, aside from the fact that it probably gave him some valuable experience, which he already had to some degree from his own past Congressional run against Rodney Frelinghuysen, but it is not like the alternative in that 2006 Congressional primary election, Albio Sires, was any more honest or any less corrupt than Vas.

I am sure that if someone better, like Steven Fulop, had been in the race, Vin would have jumped at the chance to work for him.  The only other race of interest in 2006 was Linda Stender's run against Mike Ferguson, and if I remember correctly, she had a pretty good campaign manager that year.

Don't know what side Cryan was on (0.00 / 0)
But I do know that Weinberg supported Sweeney over Codey.  And that she apparently still does.  While Buono and Cryan have stood up to the Christiecrat bosses.

Bertin (4.00 / 2)
I agree with you 100% - This is politics, i love Cryan and Buono both but they were both apart of deals 2 years ago to become Majority Leaders by making a deal there.

Its just how politics works, its not fair for anyone to say they made a backroom deal 2 years ago but now this time they are better than that.

Its how leadership fights work. Your negotiate for chairmanships, leadership positions etc. Its a matter of who can outpolitic the other.

Sweeney, Buono, Oliver, Wisniewski & Cryan as well as their budget chairs all took deals both took the deal 2 years ago when Codey, Watson Coleman etc. were removed and if any of them now claim its unfair now and wasn't then, thats ridiculous.

As long as legislators allow inside baseball games like these to be decided solely by insiders, they are only going to be as powerful as the bosses who back them AND now.

One correction, i never ran against Frelinguysen, i am a life long Monmouth resident. I was 20 when i worked for Vas.

I had confused you with Vij Pawar.  I guess that it is not an entirely unreasonable mistake, but it is an embarrassing one nevertheless.

It is still odd that someone who supported Dennis Kucinich would work for someone like Vas, but I guess at age 20, a political job is a political job, and as I said before, Sires was (and probably still is) no more honest or less corrupt than Vas.  He just hasn't been indicted or convicted yet.

The Smears WIll Backfire: Vin Will Win!!! (4.00 / 1)
And when you do please don't forget to be as aggressively progressive as you can possibly be!  :-)

Your win will be a slap in the face with the "traditional" machine politics of NJ and the conventional "wisdom".......once you are in, please don't get captivated by those elements with which the vast majority of New Jerseyans are SO disgusted that most of them don't register and don't vote.

Stick to your progressive guns/values and you will go farther faster as you/we expand the universe of New Jersey's voter base and transform the NJ Democratic party into a kick ass aggressively progressive organization that folks like Bertin can be 100% proud of.

It's not good enough to be just better than the Republicans.  That "standard" is way too low!!!

Go Vin!!!
